Net Heat of Combustion of AN-F-28 Aviation Gasolines

Description: "Experimental data on the heats of combustion and hydrogen contents of a number of aviation gasolines have been used in deriving a formula for computing net heat of combustion from (measured) gross heat of combustion. This formula appears to be sufficiently reliable for the purpose and has the advantage of making hydrogen determinations unnecessary. The data on heats of combustion are presented in tabular form, and in graphs showing the relation between net heat of combustion and (1) hydrogen c… more

PERFORMANCE OF CHIPPED MAGNESIUM VERSUS HAMMERMILLED MAGNESIUM IN THE BOMB REDUCTION OF TETRAFLUORIDE. PART I

Description: The O. Hommel Company, of Carnegie, Penna., supplied Mallinckrodt Chemical Works with three types of Mg chips or powder (Type 84, 85B, and 87B) formed by machining Mg ingots. This material was tested and compared with standard New England Lime Mg in a series of reduction runs. A new type of powder (Type 93) developed by the O. Hommel Company during the course of the first experiment was also sert to Mallinckrodt Chemical Works foi preliminary testing. As this was superior to the other tynes tes… more

Performance of compressor-turbine jet-propulsion systems

Description: Report presenting an analysis of the performance of compressor-turbine jet-propulsion systems carried out by calculating the thrust power from a compressor-turbine jet engine with a systematic variation of pressure ratio, fuel-air ratio, compressor and turbine efficiencies, flight speed, altitude, and maximum gas temperature.

Theoretical Investigation of Methods for Computing Drag From Wake Surveys at High Subsonic Speeds

Description: Report discusses graphs of constants meant to be used with a knowledge of maximum total head loss, static-pressure decrement, and integral of total-head loss across the wake of an airfoil to determine the section profile-drag coefficient. Computations of free-stream Mach numbers for certain assumed types of total-pressure distribution in the wake are provided to compare theoretical drag coefficients as determined by other equations based on the momentum method. While some disagreements are foun… more

Wind-Tunnel Investigation of Control-Surface Characteristics 22: Medium and Large Aerodynamic Balances of Two Nose Shapes and a Plain Overhang Used With a 0.20-Airfoil-Chord Flap on an NACA 0009 Airfoil

Description: "Blunt-nose and elliptical-nose overhangs of 0.35 and 0.50 flap chord and a plain overhang on a flap having a chord of 0.20 airfoil chord have been tested in two-dimensional flow on an NACA 0009 airfoil. The results of the tests are presented as aerodynamic section characteristics for several flap deflections with the gap at the flap nose sealed or unsealed. Tests were made also to determine the effectiveness of a tab of 0.20 flap chord on the plain sealed flap and on a sealed flap having an el… more

Corrosion of Tuballoy-Molybdenum Alloys by Water

Description: The primary purpose of the corrosion work was to find a tuballoy alloy which would be sufficiently corrosion resistant to be useful for canned slugs even if some of the can were to leak. The secondary purpose was to obtain general corrosion data on tuballoy alloys.

An analysis of life expectancy of airplane wings in normal cruising flight

Description: From Summary: "In order to provide a basis for judging the relative importance of wing failure by fatigue and by single intense gusts, an analysis of wing life for normal cruising flight was made based on data on the frequency of atmospheric gusts. The independent variables considered in the analysis included stress-concentration factor, stress-load relation, wing loading, design and cruising speeds, design gust velocity, and airplane size. Several methods for estimating fatigue life from gust … more

Development of Equipment for the Purification of Mercury by Distillation

Description: Abstract: "An investigation of the mercury salvage program has resulted in the development of an improved high compacity type of distillation apparatus. The still, electrically heated and essentially automatic in its operation, will produce at a rate greater than 75 pounds per hour and develop a product 99.99% pure or better. This still will handle the lowest grade crude of amalgam that can pass through the feed lines and will continue to develop a pure prodcut for comparatively long periods of… more

An Experimental Investigation of NACA Submerged-Duct Entrances

Description: The results of an investigation of submerged-duct entrances are presented. It is shown that this type of entrance possesses the following characteristics: 1) very high-critical-compressibility speeds throughout the range of high-speed inlet velocity ratios; 2) very low pressure losses for the air entering the duct at all inlet-velocity ratios; and, 3) low external drag. These characteristics are obtained by the proper shaping of the contour of the upstream approach to the submerged inlets and b… more

100-F area unit purge, May 3, 1945

Description: This report discusses the pressure drop on the 100-F unit, as measured on the eight pressure drop tubes, which had increased to 24 lbs./in.{sup 2} above base by May 2. The unit was shut down on May 3 to purge with 50 ppm solids for 1.1 hr. and to take care of necessary maintenance work.
