Earthquake Resistance of Earth and Rock-Fill Dams, Report 2: Analysis of Response of Rifle Gap Dam to Project Rulison Underground Nuclear Detonation
Summary: The motion of Rifle Gap Dam was measured in September 1969 during the Project RULISON underground nuclear explosion. The observed response was then compared with the response computed in a mathematical model. Observed and computed responses were similar. From this study it appears that the mathematical models used are applicable to the design and analysis of soil structures, at least for ground motion intensities comparable to those observed at Rifle Gap Dam. Foundation Grouting Practices at Corps of Engineers Dams

Rehabilitation of the South Jetty, Ocean City, Maryland
Partial abstract: Frequent dredging requirements and scouring at the foundation of Ocean City Inlet's south jetty resulted in a study to determine the source of the shoaling and scouring. The study concluded that sand was being transported northward along Assateague Island, through and over the south jetty, and deposited inside the inlet. The sand was then transported north by ebb currents where it encroached on the Federal navigation channel. A rehabilitation program was initiated to create a littoral barrier to eliminate the shoaling problem and to repair the scour hold. Three headland breakwaters were constructed to stabilize Northern Assateague Island. The site was selected as part of the Monitoring Completed Coastal Projects (MCCP) Program to determine how well the rehabilitation project accomplished its design purpose.

Summary: "Forty tests were conducted with two amphibious tracked vehicles and one amphibious wheeled vehicle at Eglin Air Force Base, Fla., and near Khon Kaen, Thailand, to determine the vehicles' capabilities for exiting closed bodies of water. Empirical relations, based on the data collected in this study and in previous studies, are presented to support the conclusions that performance of amphibious tracked and wheeled vehicles (in terms of "go-no go") in the water-land interface can be correlated with soil strength (expressed as average cone index of the 0- to 6-in. soil layer), and that the slope-climbing ability in the water-land interface of the tracked vehicles tested compares favorably with that of the same vehicles operating on land surfaces of similar soil composition and consistency" (p. ix).

From abstract: "This report develops a process for the selection of areas appropriate for artificial marsh construction using dredged material. By application of the methodology set forth, Engineer District personnel will be able to efficiently identify such areas...The selection rationale is tested in Volume II by the choice and description of 50 prime candidate project areas, 10 within each of five major coastal geographical regions. From this compilation, 10 optimum project areas, two in each geographical region, were selected and described further using data gathered in project areas and from relevant Engineer Districts."

Nondestructive Vibratory Testing and Evaluation Procedure for Military Roads and Streets
This report describes a procedure for the nondestructive evaluation of military roads and streets, performed with the Road Rater 2008 (an electrohydraulic vibrator which measures the load-deflection response of pavements). "[It] also describes the testing equipment, testing techniques, data reduction procedures, and computational methodology used in developing the evaluation procedures. Detailed examples are presented in the Appendices to guide the users through the evaluation procedures for both flexible (AC) and rigid (PCC) highway pavements. The report contains an extensive review of the literature, a description of the test procedures, results of an investigation of the most important engineering properties of bamboo, descriptions of tests of 26 bamboo-reinforced structural elements (20 simply supported beams with 6-ft (1.83-m) spans, and 6 simply supported two-way slabs of varying length, width, and depth), and conclusions and tentative recommendations for the design of bamboo-reinforced structures" (p. xiii).

Mission Bay Harbor, California, Design for Wave and Surge Protection and Flood Control: Hydraulic Model Investigation
Partial abstract: A 1:100-scale (undistorted) hydraulic model, reproducing Mission Bay Harbor, approximately 3 miles of shoreline, and sufficient offshore area to permit generation of the required test waves, was used to investigate the arrangement and design of proposed structures for (a) improving hazardous entrance conditions, (b) reducing surge inside the harbor, and (c) eliminating potential flood hazards. The original proposal for harbor improvement consisted of a 2,200-ft-long offshore breakwater. The proposed structures for river flood control consisted of (a) a 1,200-ft-long weir in the middle jetty, (b) various south jetty extensions, and (c) diversion dikes on the middle jetty.
