6 GeV light source project cost estimating procedure

Description: To maintain uniformity in estimating the cost requirements of the various components of the 6 GeV Light Source, the following procedure will be used by all the task groups. The procedure uses a Work Breakdown Structure (VBS) to break down the project into manageable, easy to estimate, components. The project is first broken down into major tasks or categories. Then each major division is continuously subdivided until the desired level of detail is achieved. This can be shown best by using the e… more

3Q120 Low Gradient Behaviour

Description: Three 3Q120 magnets--representative of those in the AP 1 line--have been measured with a harmonics probe at MDTF at both low (0-48 A) and high (to >= 400 A). The intent of the measurements was to learn their behavior at the low gradients necessary to transport 8 Gev antiprotons back through the AP 1 line for injection into the Main Ring (and subsequently the superconducting ring--see Ref. 1). Many of the measurements have been preceded by remnant field biasing ramps to 148, 270, 295, or 405 … more

Description: Three 3Q120 magnets--representative of those in the AP 1 line--have been measured with a harmonics probe at MDTF at both low (0-48 A) and high (to >= 400 A). The intent of the measurements was to learn their behavior at the low gradients necessary to transport 8 Gev antiprotons back through the AP 1 line for injection into the Main Ring. This paper describes some aspects of the measurements that were not included in the main paper, in order to keep the size of the main report reasonably smal… more

5f-band narrowing in UX/sub 3/B compounds: evidence from resonant photoemission. [X = Ru or Rh]

Description: Resonant photoemission at the uranium 5d disorption edge has been used to determine the 5f emission in URu/sub 3/, URh/sub 3/, URu/sub 3/B, and URh/sub 3/B polycrystalline samples. The observed 5f band narrowing (from 2.0 to 1.5 eV as one goes from URu/sub 3/ to URu/sub 3/B, and from 2.8 to 1.1 eV for URh/sub 3/ and URh/sub 3/B respectively) is explained as due to a decrease in the f-d hybridization between uranium and rhodium (ruthenium) atoms.

Accelerators for heavy ion fusion

Description: Large fusion devices will almost certainly produce net energy. However, a successful commercial fusion energy system must also satisfy important engineering and economic constraints. Inertial confinement fusion power plants driven by multi-stage, heavy-ion accelerators appear capable of meeting these constraints. The reasons behind this promising outlook for heavy-ion fusion are given in this report. This report is based on the transcript of a talk presented at the Symposium on Lasers and Parti… more

Analysis of /sup 81/Kr in groundwater using laser resonance ionization spectroscopy

Description: A new analytical technique based on resonant ionization of krypton with a vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) laser source was used to determine low-level /sup 81/Kr concentrations in groundwater. The long half-life (210,000 years) and low concentration (1.3 x 10/sup 3/ /sup 81/Kr atoms per liter of modern water at 10/sup 0/C) make the detection of /sup 81/Kr by radioactive counting techniques extremely difficult. In this method, krypton gas was removed from water taken from an underground Swiss aquifer u… more

Application of Hardy's multiquadric interpolation to hydrodynamics

Description: Hardy's multiquadric interpolation (MQI) scheme is a global, continuously differentiable interpolation method for solving scattered data interpolation problems. It is capable of producing monotonic, extremely accurate interpolating functions, integrals, and derivatives. Derivative estimates for a variety of one and two-dimensional surfaces were obtained. MQI was then applied to the spherical blast wave problem of von Neumann. The numerical solution agreed extremely well with the exact solution.… more

Band structure of UO/sub 2/: an angle resolved and resonant photoemission study

Description: A detailed study of angle resolved photoemission of UO/sub 2/ <100> in the normal emission configuration is presented. The results are compared to a semirelativistic LAPW band calculation with the actual calculated empty bands used in the data reduction. Excellent agreement is found with calculations both for filled states as well as critical points in the empty states with no adjustment of bands. f-p hybridization is found at the leading edge of the valence band and not at the bottom of the va… more

Beta-delayed fission calculations for the astrophysical r-process

Description: We discuss RPA calculations of the Gamow-Teller properties of neutron-rich nuclei to study the effect of ..beta..-delayed fission and neutron emission on the production of Th, U and Pu chronometric nuclei in the astrophysical r-process. We find significant differences in the amount of ..beta..-delayed fission when compared with the recent calculations of Thielemann et al. (1983). In the simplest case of a constant abundance along the r-process path, however, the inferred production ratios in bo… more

Betatron motion and optical deflection in free electron lasers

Description: Transverse displacement of the electron beam at input to the wiggler induces betatron oscillation, imparting a sinusoidal transverse displacement to the gain medium seen by the optical beam. As the light propagates down this ''rippled'' medium it is guided by the dispersion, thereby acquiring some transverse sinusoidal displacement. At output from the wiggler the optical beam in general has acquired some transverse component of velocity, that is, it propagates off-axis. As the e-beam displaceme… more

Catalytic gasification of bagasse for the production of methanol

Description: The purpose of the study was to evaluate the technical and economic feasibility of catalytic gasification of bagasse to produce methanol. In previous studies, a catalytic steam gasification process was developed which converted wood to methanol synthesis gas in one step using nickel based catalysts in a fluid-bed gasifier. Tests in a nominal 1 ton/day process development unit (PDU) gasifier with these same catalysts showed bagasse to be a good feedstock for fluid-bed gasifiers, but the catalyst… more
