Geology and Ore Deposits of Mesa V, Lukachukai District, Arizona

Description: From abstract: Mesa V of the Lukachukai area is capped by Morrison sediments which dip gently eastward from the mountains to the mesa tip, where the strata are tilted sharply to the opposite dip by the Lukachukai monocline. The Salt Wash of Mesa V contains ore outcrops which indicate favorable intensity of mineralization at one horizon along a 2000-foot outcrop interval. Other scatted exposures indicate the existence of ore under much of the mesa surface.

Reconnaissance Examinations of Copper Uranium Deposits West of the Colorado River

Description: Several relatively small copper-uranium deposits have been found in southwestern Utah along the contact of the Shinarump and Moenkopi formations of Triassic age, at least from the San Rafael Swell area of Emery County, southward through central and eastern Garfield County, southwestward into western Kane County, and westward into the southern part of Washington County.

USAEC Airborne Radiometric Reconnaissance in Arizona, California, Nevada and New Mexico, 1953 to 1956

Description: From introduction: This is one of a series of three reports on airborne radioactivity surveys in the United States. The reports contain the 185 airborne anomaly maps issued by the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission as a result of the AEC's aerial surveying program conducted from March 1952 to June 1956; two ground reconnaissance maps of Utah also are included. Most of the reconnaissance was done in the western United States.

Examination of Copper-Uranium Occurrences in the Willaha Area, Coconino County, Arizona

Description: Abstract: A study, consisting of field and laboratory work, was undertaken in an endeavor to establish possible structural mineralization controls associated with the copper-uranium occurrences in the Willaha area, Coconino County, Arizona. Uranium mineralization, apparent at present, is localized along small fissures and vugs and in certain beds and lenses of the middle member of the Kaibab formation(Permian). It is associated with copper and iron oxide staining. Though no definite ore controls were disclosed by this study, at least a limited program of shallow drilling is warranted on the property. This sub-surface exploration should determine possible extensions of known mineralized areas, explore surface radiometric anomalies, and provide data for the determination of possible guides to ore. Deeper exploration may encounter mineralization in other horizons of the Kaibab limestone.

Preliminary Reconnaissance of the Dripping Spring Quartzite Formation in Gila and Pinal Counties, Arizona

Description: Abstract: A four-week reconnaissance of certain portions of the mountainous area in Gila and Pinal Counties, Arizona, was undertaken in March and April, 1953, to inspect accessible outcrops of Dripping Spring quartzite, a pre-Cambrian formation which has lately attracted the interest of the Atomic Energy Commission by the discovery of two separate occurrences of uranium mineralization. Although no new deposits were found during the field work, a more thorough examination of the quartzite seems warranted. Recommendations for further prospecting by airborne and ground methods are presented in this report, and are based largely on observations made during the brief visit.

Preliminary Report on Uranium-Bearing Deposits in Mohave County, Arizona

Description: Abstract: Preliminary studies of the Wallapai Mining District and selected properties in the Maynard and Greenwood Mining Districts, Mohave County, Arizona, from January 8 to March 8, 1953, were made to determine the extent of uranium mineralization. All of the uranium properties examined are of the vein type and are believed to be of mesothermal origin. Brecciation and porosity of the veins appear to be controlling factors in the concentration of uranium minerals from the ore-bearing solutions. Although the uranium minerals present in these districts have not been specifically identified, they appear to be mostly primary with very minor occurrences of secondary products. One exception is the State mine in the Greenwood District, where secondary minerals predominate.

Preliminary Report of Reconnaissance in the Cameron Area, Arizona

Description: Introduction: A radiometric airborne reconnaissance of the Cameron, Arizona, district was conducted in the late fall of 1952 and early winter of 1953. Flying was carried out under the direction of the Salt Lake Exploration Branch of the Atomic Energy Commission, Division of Raw Materials. Airborne equipment and ground personnel were provided through the Technical Services Branch of the Grand Junction Exploration Division.

Drilling in the Flatirons Locality, Monument Valley, Arizona

Description: From introduction: A subsurface exploration program was undertaken to investigate the concentration of uranium and vanadium in or near the base of the Shinarump member of the Chinle formation in the Flatirons locality, and to develop criteria whereby adjacent unexplored areas could be evaluated as to potential production capacity from study of geological and mineralogical features at the host rook outcrop. An earlier study of the area by C. G. Evensen of the U. S. Atomic Energy Commission had shown that geological conditions favorable to the accumulation of commercial uranium deposits were present in the Flatirons area.

Investigation of Shinarump Channels on Oljetoh Mesa, Arizona - Utah

Description: From to the files: The Shinarump-Moenkopi contact on Oljetoh Mesa in the Monument Valley district, Arizona-Utah, was examined from November 5 to 15, 1951, to determine the location of and the mineralization in Shinarump channels. Twenty-seven distinct channel outcrops were located and examined. Three of these channel outcrops are mineralized and the remaining 24 are barren. Plate I shows the distribution of the Shinarump, the Moenkopi, and the DeChelly member of the Cutler formation; the location of the Shinarmp channel outcrops; the channel trend where there is good evidence for such a trend. The Hoskinrnini tongue of the Cutler was mapped with the Moenkopi as it is not a good mappable unit in this area. The three mineralized outcrops are indicated by the letters A, G, and AA while the barren outcrops bear the letters B to F and H to Z.

Mineral Resources of a Part of the Dos Cabezas Mountains Wilderness Study Area (Az-040-065), Cochise County, Arizona

Description: From summary: In January-April 1984, the Bureau of Mines conducted a mineral survey of the Lower Burro Creek Wilderness Study Area as required by Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579, October 21, 1976). The Lower Burro Creek Wilderness Study Area comprises 21,700 acres in southeastern Mohave and Yavapai Counties, Arizona. Mines and prospects are located on deposits and (or) occurrences of gold, bentonite, magnesite, and agate in the eastern and southeastern part of the study area.

Mineral Resources of the Harquahala Mountains Study Area (Az-020-095), La Paz and Maricopa Counties, Arizona

Description: From summary: The Harquahala Mountains BLM Wilderness Study Area is in the Basin and Range physiographic province of west-central Arizona. The present study covers 24,735 acres of the 72,675 acre wilderness study area, preliminary recommended as suitable for inclusion in the National Wilderness Preservation System in La Paz and Maricopa Counties, Arizona. During the winter of 1983-84, under authority of the Federal Land Policy and Management Act (Public Law 94-579), the Bureau mapped and sampled mines and prospects in and near the WSA to determine the mineral resources present.

Airborne Radioactivity Survey of Part of the Navajo Indian Reservation of Utah and Arizona

Non-Core Dry Hole Drilling at Cove Mesa, Arizona

Description: Abstract: A drilling program was conducted by the Atomic Energy Commission on Cove Mesa, Arizona to further develop uranium and vanadium ore reserves that are vital to the National Defense. The drilling was performed by the Minerals Engineering Company of Grand Junction, Colorado. Uranium and vanadium ore horizons are found in the Salt Wash member of the Morrison formation on Cove Mesa.

Uranium-Copper Deposits Near Copper Canyon Navajo Indian Reservation, Arizona

Description: From introduction: During the summer of 1951, Navajos conducted John W. Chester, Russell C. Cutter, and E. V. Reinhardt, Grand Junction Exploration Branch, U. S. Atomic Energy Commission, to a copper deposit in Copper Canyon. Little radioactivity was noted, and no further work was done in the area at that time. In October 1951, the same group of Navajos reported the discovery of uranium ore in another portion of the same area. The site was visited by Cutter who noted that an excavation made by the Navajos had disclosed a 3-foot thickness of low-grade uranium ore. In November 1951, Cutter again visited the area and observed that the Navajos had opened a 5-foot face of good ore.

Geology and Drilling Recommendations Oak Spring Area Apache County, Arizona, and San Juan County, New Mexico

Description: Abstract: Uranium ore deposits on two exposed rims and past production records of tonnage and grade indicate an exploration program is justified in the Oak Springs area. A minimum of 24,000 feet of core drilling is recommended with a maximum of 75,000 feet to be based on favorability as determined by subsurface studies.
