1,4-diphenylbutadiyne as a potential tritium getter

Description: Research on the acetylene compound 1,4-diphenylbutadiyne is an effort to develop an air-operative tritium gas scavenger. T/sub 2/ adds to the acetylene bond of the organic in the presence of a metal catalyst. The catalyst also stimulates the oxidation reaction as well. The butadiyne compound has shown good reaction efficiency at 300 ppM T/sub 2/ in static dry air. At this concentration 75% of the scavenged tritium was in the organic. This work has expanded to the investigation of liquid acetyle… more

2-D emittance equation with acceleration and compression

Description: Since both acceleration and compression are required for an Inertial Fusion Driver, the understanding of their effect on the beam quality, emittance, is important. This report attempts to generalize the usual emittance formula for the drifting beam to include these effects. The derivation of the 2-D emittance equation is carried out and a comparison with the particle code results is given. The 2-D emittance at a given axial location is reasonable to consider for a long beam, particularly with v… more

3-D numerical analysis of a high-gain free-electron laser

Description: We present a novel approach to the 3-dimensional high-gain free- electron laser amplifier problem. The method allows us to write the laser field as an integral equation which can be efficiently and accurately evaluated on a small computer. The model is general enough to allow the inclusion of various initial electron beam distributions to study the gain reduction mechanism and its dependence on the physical parameters. 16 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

4. pi. physics with the plastic ball

Description: 4 ..pi.. data taken with the Plastic Ball show that cluster production in relativistic nuclear collisions depends on both the size of the participant volume and the finite size of the cluster. The measurement of the degree of thermalization and the search for collective flow will permit the study of the applicability of macroscopic concepts such as temperature and density.

6 GeV light source project cost estimating procedure

Description: To maintain uniformity in estimating the cost requirements of the various components of the 6 GeV Light Source, the following procedure will be used by all the task groups. The procedure uses a Work Breakdown Structure (VBS) to break down the project into manageable, easy to estimate, components. The project is first broken down into major tasks or categories. Then each major division is continuously subdivided until the desired level of detail is achieved. This can be shown best by using the e… more

An 805 MHz disk and washer structure for the Fermilab Linac Upgrade

Description: The Linac Upgrade program, a portion of the Tevatron Upgrade, calls for increasing the energy of the existing 200 MeV, 201.25 MHz linac to 400 MeV in order to reduce beam emittance degradation in the Booster. This is to be accomplished by replacing the last four Alvarez linac tanks with more efficient, higher gradient 805 MHz linac structure. One of the linac structures currently under study in a collaboration between Fermilab and SAIC is the Disk-and-Washer accelerating structure with bi-perio… more

18t Resistive Magnet Development. Conceptual Design Second Annual Report

Description: This report documents the work performed on a normal conducting magnet during fiscal year 1985. Emphasis, during the study, was on refinement of the structural design and optimization of the coil current density distribution for either maximum field generation or minimum power consumption. The results have shown that one can generate a 4.4 tesla field using 6.14 megawatts or 3.1 tesla at 1.43 megawatts. The structural design has been modified to stiffen the outer turn of the conductor. The modi… more

1963 revisited: should we set a precedent of recalculating old exposures

Description: This paper describes recent experience in re-evaluating the dose to an employee. This employee was plagued with skin disorders for years, but he questioned his recorded beta dose only after a recent LLNL cancer study began collecting data. He was concerned that his radiation dose recorded during the time he worked on a fission burst reactor experiment in 1963 did not represent the actual dose he received. About six months were spent gathering information, putting the information together, makin… more

3Q120 Low Gradient Behaviour

Description: Three 3Q120 magnets--representative of those in the AP 1 line--have been measured with a harmonics probe at MDTF at both low (0-48 A) and high (to >= 400 A). The intent of the measurements was to learn their behavior at the low gradients necessary to transport 8 Gev antiprotons back through the AP 1 line for injection into the Main Ring (and subsequently the superconducting ring--see Ref. 1). Many of the measurements have been preceded by remnant field biasing ramps to 148, 270, 295, or 405 … more

5f-band narrowing in UX/sub 3/B compounds: evidence from resonant photoemission. [X = Ru or Rh]

Description: Resonant photoemission at the uranium 5d disorption edge has been used to determine the 5f emission in URu/sub 3/, URh/sub 3/, URu/sub 3/B, and URh/sub 3/B polycrystalline samples. The observed 5f band narrowing (from 2.0 to 1.5 eV as one goes from URu/sub 3/ to URu/sub 3/B, and from 2.8 to 1.1 eV for URh/sub 3/ and URh/sub 3/B respectively) is explained as due to a decrease in the f-d hybridization between uranium and rhodium (ruthenium) atoms.
