The Effects of Channel Excavation on Water-Quality Characteristics of the Black River and on Ground-Water Levels Near Dunn, North Carolina

Description: From abstract: Data were collected at three sites on the Black River near Dunn, North Carolina, to define the effects of channel excavation on water-quality characteristics and on ground-water levels in nearby areas. Background data were collected at a site upstream from the 5-mile-long excavated reach. Changes in hydrologic characteristics were determined from data collected before, during, and after the construction period 1976-81. Significant changes occurred in shallow ground-water levels, streamflow velocities, water temperatures, dissolved oxygen, and suspended sediment; little or no change occurred in pH, dissolved solids, nitrogen, phosphorus, and bacteria.

Hydrology of the Albemarle-Pamlico Region, North Carolina -- a Preliminary Report on the Impact of Agricultural Developments

Description: From abstract: Extensive agricultural land clearing and drainage operations underway in a 650 square mile part of the Albemarle-Pamlico region--a 1,634 square mile peninsula in North Carolina lying between Albemarle Sound on the North and the Pamlico River on the south--are changing the hydrology of the area. The artificial drainage system being constructed in the region, although it will probably result in only a slight modification of the natural annual evatranspiration, overland runoff, and ground-water discharge, will likely result in several important problems.

Knob Creek Monazite Placer, Cleveland County, North Carolina

Description: From abstract: The area comprising the first flood plain downstream from the headwaters of Knob Creek was one of three monazite placer deposits near Shelby, N. C., recommended by the Geological Survey for investigation by the Bureau of Mines as a joint effort by the above two agencies. Past production of monazite from the headwaters of this stream and its drainage of an area of known source rocks were factors influencing this selection. Drilling of the deposit was started on November 26, 1951, and completed December 29, 1951. Twenty-two churn-drill holes were completed to bed-rock on 112 acres of this flood plain for a total depth of 433 feet of vertical drilling.
