The Charge on Uranium(VI) in Acid Solution

Description: Abstract. The distribution coefficient of U(VI) between perchloric acid solutions and benzene solutions of TTA has been measured as a function of the acidity. It was possible to interpret the data in terms of the charge on the U(VI) species present in the aqueous phase. The experiments indicate that U(VI) exists as an ion charge +2 at acidities from 0.1M to 2.5M. In the interpretations of the distribution data, it was necessary to know the acidity coefficient of the uranyl chelate in the ben… more

Consideration of Dynamic Loads on the Vertical Tail by the Theory of Flat Yawing Maneuvers

Description: "Dynamic yawing effects on vertical-tail loads are considered by a theory of flat yawing maneuvers. A comparison is shown between computed loads and the loads measured in flight on a fighter airplane. The dynamic effects were investigated on a large flying boat for both an abrupt rudder deflection and sinusoidal rudder deflection" (p. 91).

Effect of Fuel Composition, Engine Operating Variables, and Spark-Plug Type and Condition on Preignition-Limited Performance of an R-2800 Cylinder

Description: The preignition characteristics of the R-2800 cylinder, as effected by fuel consumption, engine operating variables, and spark plug type and condition, were evaluated. The effects on preignition-limited performance of various percentages of aromatics (benzene, toluene, cumene, xylene) in a base fuel of triptane were investigated. Two paraffins (triptane and S + 6.0 ml TEL/gal) and two refinery blends (28-R and 33-R) were preignition rated. The effect of changes in the following engine operating… more

The Preservation of Fluorescence Standards

Description: Report discussing the practice of using methyl methacrylate as a coating for platinium dishes in fluorescence method of uranium analysis. The experimental procedure described in this report to evaluate this practice indicates that the sample would be sufficiently protected from contamination and would not need to be stored in a desiccator.

Tantalum-Rich Alloys of Tuballoy

Description: Report discussing "methods for the manufacture of refractory crucibles for use in high temperature work in general." Additionally, "preliminary experiments with the induction furnace to test the action of tantalum on tantalum carbide at 2900°C are described."
