Advanced Coal Conversion Process Demonstration Project

Description: This project will demonstrate an advanced thermal coal drying process coupled with physical cleaning techniques to upgrade high-moisture, low-rank coals to produce a high-quality, low-sulfur fuel. The coal will be processed through two vibrating fluidized bed reactors that will remove chemically bound water, carboxyl groups, and volatile sulfur compounds. After drying, the coal will be put through a deep-bed stratifier cleaning process to effect separation of the pyrite rich ash. The process wi… more

After the Cold War: Living With Lower Defense Spending

Description: This report focuses on ways to handle the dislocation of workers and communities that is, to some degree, inevitable in the defense cutback. It opens a discussion of how defense technologies might be converted to commercial applications. The second and final report of the assessment will continue that discussion and will concentrate on opportunities to channel human and technological resources into building a stronger civilian economy.

Analysis and decision document in support of acquisition of steam supply for the Hanford 200 Area

Description: The US Department of Energy (DOE) is now evaluating its facility requirements in support of its cleanup mission at Hanford. One of the early findings is that the 200-Area steam plants, constructed in 1943, will not meet future space heating and process needs. Because the 200 Area will serve as the primary area for waste treatment and long-term storage, a reliable steam supply is a critical element of Hanford operations. This Analysis and Decision Document (ADD) is a preliminary review of the st… more

An Analytic Determination of Beta Poloidal and Internal Inductance in an Elongated Tokamak From Magnetic Probe Measurements

Description: Analytic calculations of the magnetic fields available to magnetic diagnostics are performed for tokamaks with circular and elliptical cross sections. The explicit dependence of the magnetic fields on the poloidal beta and internal inductances is sought. For tokamaks with circular cross sections, Shafranov's results are reproduced and extended. To first order in the inverse aspect ratio expansion of the magnetic fields, only a specific combination of beta poloidal and internal inductance is fou… more

Anomalous energy exchange in the gBL and quasilinear theories

Description: The rate of turbulence-induced energy exchange {dot W}{sub o} between species is computed in the framework of the quasilinear and gBL transport theories, and the relationship between these two theories, and the relationship between these two similar theories is thereby elucidated. For both theories, general formal expressions for {dot W}{sub o} are developed, and then applied to the trapped electron mode for illustration. The general expressions for {dot W}{sub o} in the two theories are formal… more

Anomalous variation of the normal state resistance of {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}CuN(CN){sub 2}Br with temperature and hydrostatic pressure. Small polaron

Description: Several radical organic cation conductors have resistances, R(T)`s which attain maxima as functions of temperature. In some cases, {kappa}-(BEDT-TTF){sub 2}CuN(CN){sub 2}Br for instance [Sushko et al., J. Phys. I. France, 1 (1991) 1375], the maxima are suppressed by hydrostatic pressure, and with sufficient pressure R(T) becomes classified as metallic in the sense that dR/dT > 0. These variations with temperature and pressure can be understood quantitatively in terms of two equivalent models: (… more
