Absorption Spectra of Aromatic Disulfides

Description: The effect of solvents and temperature on the optical absorption spectrum of a number of substituted aromatic disulfides is reported. The problems offered by the disulfide link and the exchange reactions between disulfides, and between disulfides and thiols, are receiving increasing attention. Recently the base-catalyzed exchange between various alkyl disulfides and the corresponding thiols was studied by means of a radioactive-tracer technique. Our initial purpose was to extend these investiga… more

The Absorption Spectra of Complexes of Uranium (VI) with Some [beta]-Diketones

Description: Abstract: "The absorption spectra of the complexes of uranium (VI) with four [beta]-diketones were determined under various conditions of pH, concentration of uranium, and alcohol concentration. Under optimum conditions, the maximum molar absorptivity (31,200) is obtained using 2-furoyltri-fluoroacetone. This compares with about 4,000 and 19,000 for the thiocyanate and dibenzoylmethane complexes, respectively."

An air-flow-direction pickup suitable for telemetering use on pilotless aircraft

Description: From Summary: "A free-swiveling vane-type pickup for measuring air flow direction in both the angle-of-attack and angle-of-sideslip directions is described. Test results are presented which indicate that the pickup is aerodynamically stable and has an accuracy, obtained from a bench calibration, of better than 0.3^o under conditions including acceleration up to 20g in any direction, Mach numbers from 0.5 to 2.8, dynamic pressures up to at least 65 psi. Equations and curves which can be used to … more

An analysis of airspeed, altitude, and acceleration data obtained from a twin-engine transport airplane operated over a feeder-line route in the Rocky Mountains

Description: "Time-history data of airspeed, altitude, and acceleration obtained with the NACA VGH recorder from a twin-engine airplane operated by a regional feeder airline in the Rocky Mountains are evaluated to determine the magnitude and frequency of occurrence of gusts and gust accelerations and the operating airspeeds and altitudes. The results obtained are compared with the results previously obtained from a representative short-haul and long-haul operation" (p. 1).

Analysis of the Interaction of 300-Mev Neutrons with Xenon

Description: Abstract: And investigation of the interactions between 300-Mev neutrons and xenon was made by means of a cloud chamber in a pulsed magnetic field of 21,700 gauss placed in the neutron beam of the 184-inch Berkeley cyclotron. Eighty-seven negative pion events and 257 other stars were analyzed. In addition an experimental check was made on the energy of the incoming neutrons. Classification, identification, and angular and energy distributions of prongs associated with all events are presented. … more

Analysis of turbojet-engine controls for afterburning starting

Description: From Introduction: "The object of this report is to investigate the effects of after-burner lighting on the engine behavior and control-system requirements of a controlled turbojet engine. In this report, a simulation procedure for the afterburner is developed (based on ref. 3), this afterburner simulation is coordinated with previously developed nonafterburning-engine simulation procedures (ref. 4), and the compensated interacting control systems of references 1 and 2 are used. The results of … more

Analysis of turbomachine viscous losses affected by changes in blade geometry

Description: From Introduction: "This report also presents a method of optimizing the blade number and solidity for a given application if the blade loss variation with solidity can be estimated or experimentally determined. Also discussed are the penalties in performance that accompany deviations from optimum values of blade number and solidity."

An Automatic Flaw Detector for Aluminum Cans

Description: From abstract: "A tester, utilizing eddy currents, was developed to detect inclusions and voids in aluminum cans. The sensing element is a small probe that does not touch the can under inspection. An experimental feeder, developed along with the tester, permits the automatic inspection of one can per minute."

Band-Pass Shock and Vibration Absorbers for Application to Aircraft Landing Gear

Description: Note presenting a description of a new class of frequency-selective shock absorbers called band-pass shock absorbers, which were conceived as a means of overcoming some of the limitations of conventional shock absorbers. The shock absorbers may be designed to isolate two bodies from each other over certain ranges of exciting frequencies or rates of load application while coupling them over the remainder of the frequency spectrum.

Basic Gamma-Ray Data for ART Heat Deposition Calculations

Description: In order that fairly accurate thermal stress calculations can be made on the ART, it is necessary to have a reasonable picture of the temperature distribution in the reactor. To get the temperature distributions, and to determine cooling requirements in various parts of the reactor, one must know the heat deposition rates due to alpha particles, beta rays, gamma rays, and neutrons in all parts of the reactor. The present report contains only the basic physical data necessary to determine the he… more

Biological Effects of Pressure Phenomena Occurring Inside Protective Shelters Following a Nuclear Detonation

Description: In two series of experiments 277 experimental animals, including 66 dogs, 52 rabbits, 52 guinea pigs, 63 rats, and 44 mice, were exposed under selected conditions in six different general types of instrumented above- and belowground shelters to blast produced by nuclear explosions. The distance of the several structures from Ground Zero ranged from 1050 to 5500 ft. The most severe alterations in the pressure environment occurring inside the structures followed the detonation of a nuclear device… more

Boundaries of Supersonic Axisymmetric Free Jets

Description: Report presenting calculations by the method of characteristics of 2960 boundaries of supersonic axisymmetric free jets exhausting from conically divergent nozzles into still air. The calculations covered a range of jet Mach numbers, a ratio of specific heats of the jet, divergence angles of the nozzle, and jet static-pressure ratios. Results regarding the effect of increasing the static pressure ratio, the simulation of one jet boundary by another, and interpolation and extrapolation of calcul… more

Calculation and compilation of the unsteady-lift functions for a rigid wing subjected to sinusoidal gusts and to sinusoidal sinking oscillations

Description: The total lift responses to sinusoidal sinking oscillations and to sinusoidal gusts have been calculated, largely from existing information, for wings of various plan forms in subsonic and supersonic flow. For most of the cases considered, closed-form expressions are given and the final results are presented in the form of plots of the square of the modulus of the lift coefficient for wings in a sinusoidally oscillating gust field and in the form of the real and imaginary parts of the lift coef… more
