Astronavigation Computer Research

Description: Report discussing the work accomplished in proving the feasibility of a magnetic-logic computer. The most significant accomplishments of the program are: A biaperture ferrite element was developed for use in memories and registers in the temperature range from -55 C to +125 C. The element is employed in: (1) the NDRO, random access, electrically alterable program memory, (2) the NDRO random access data memory, (3) the DRO registers in the arithmetic unit. The feasibility of using single driver … more

Experimental Investigation of Heat Transfer to Complex Aerodynamic Configurations at Hypersonic Speeds

Description: Report discussing tests with a heat sensitive paint and ceramic models representative of an Aerospaceplane conducted in Tunnel C, VKF, Arnold Center. The purpose was to locate regions of severe heating and to obtain an approximation of the heat flux through the use of calibration spheres. The test facility, conditions, procedures, model design are described, along with an analysis of testing results.

Investigation of a Method for the Prediction of Vibratory Response and Stress in Typical Flight Vehicle Structure

Description: Report discussing the outcomes of a program to predict the vibratory response of a complex structure such as an aircraft fuselage or missile to a random external forcing function. The various needs for better handling of new phenomena in structural dynamics are given. A dynamically similar structural model is presented along with a demonstration which includes design, construction, and test of such a model.

Microminiaturization Techniques for Communication Equipment

Description: Report discussing a study initiated to investigate and apply techniques of microminiaturization to circuits designed for high reliability performance with two goals: (1) to develop ultra-reliability design techniques in communication equipment, and (2) to microminiaturize the resulting circuits.Compiled in the report are information and instructions to guide transistor circuit engineers in designing semiconductor circuits that lend themselves to microminiaturization. Research on the Basic Nature of Stress Corrosion for Various Structural Alloys at Room and Elevated Temperatures, Part 2

Description: Report discussing research on the basic nature of stress corrosion for various structural alloys at room and elevated temperatures. Program objectives were: (1) to study the effect of microstructure on susceptibility to stress corrosion cracking in the short-transverse direction of 7075-T6 aluminum alloy; and (2) to study the kinetics of stress-corrosion cracking at elevated temperature of candidate materials for structural applications in the trisonic transport in the presence of sea salt. Str… more

Weak-Signal Communication Techniques

Description: Report presenting results of a two-year study of weak-signal communication techniques. That report includes evaluation of bounds on communication performance, determination of the threshold performance of FMFB demodulators, analysis of FSK systems with noise-like signals, and determination of group code performance. The present report contains the results of additional theoretical studies on threshold bounds for analog communication systems; a detailed analysis and evaluation of the use of bina… more
