A Program of Two-Phase Flow Investigation Quarterly Report: First Quarterly Report, March-June, 1963

Description: Task A: Modification and Preparation of Experimental Facility. Facility engineering and layout is about seventy-five percent complete. Task B: Design and Construction of Test Sections. The major dimensions and characteristics of the metal and glass test sections have been calculated. One feasibility test of the electrically conducting coating on samples of glass tubing has been completed. Task C: Design and Construction of Test Stand, Task E: Pressure and Temperature Instrumentation for Test Section and Task F: Power Supply for Test Section. Preliminary engineering has been initiated on these tasks. The planned approach has been defined in each case. For Task E the transducer specifications have been defined and quotations on and/or sample units of the transducers have been requested. Tasks C and F can proceed with detailing as soon as drafting on Task B is about 50 percent complete. This point is scheduled to be reached during the first part of July. Task D: Void Fraction Instrumentation. The requirements for the x-ray instrumentation have been considered in the course of Task B and the x-ray power supply is presently on hand. The detailed engineering effort on this task is not scheduled to begin before July.

A Program of Two-Phase Flow Investigation Quarterly Report: Fourth Quarterly Report, January-March, 1964

Description: Summary: The design, construction and assembly of all components were completed during the first contract year previous to December 1963. These efforts, defined by Tasks A-F, are document in (1), (2), and (3). Brief summaries of these completed efforts are given in the introduction to each of the tasks in the text of this report. The digest given below covers only the shakedown and analysis work carried out in the fourth quarter of the first contract year. Task G Shakedown Tests. The photographic procedure has been experimentally defined for the glass test section. Four automatic 35 mm cameras and four strobe light sources have been ordered on ATL funds and their respective mounting arrangements are in place. Roughly ten test runs were carried out in the glass test section during the course of the above work. Satisfactory recorder traces have been obtained on all measurement systems. These systems presently meet the accuracy and linearity specifications initially set. An x-ray void fraction signal adjustment and filtering circuit has been design and installed to provide equal resolution across the test section. Calibration disc inserts have been installed to permit satisfactory beam intensity calibration. Good agreement has been obtained between calculated and measured beam intensity profiles across the test section. To improve the flexibility of the differential pressure measurement system, zero suppression up to 1.5 psi has been calibrated for each bridge circuit. This makes up for the fact that the reference pressure control regulator does not quite meet the vendors dead band specifications. To facilitate the initial records chart calibration for the temperature sensors a special precision decade box switching circuit has been installed. While no significant temperature sensor calibration shift has taken place in two months, the lack of adequate reliability of these units will require a periodic calibration check. Negotiation …

A Program of Two-Phase Flow Investigation Quarterly Report: Second Quarterly Report, July-September, 1963

Description: Task A: Modification and Preparation of Experimental Facility. With the exception of the insulation of modified components, the experimental facility is complete. Insulation will be completed by the end of September. the system has been charged with Refrigerant-22 and preliminary loop performance tests have been completed without the test sections.. Task B: Design and Construction of Test Sections. The stainless steel test section has been prepared complete with end flanges and pressure tap locations. Wall thickness tolerances have been ultrasonically checked. Test section inlet and discharge assemblies are being completed and the whole assembly will be ready for installation by the end of September. Glass sections from the same drawn length which will make up the final test sections have been received for pressure tests. The final coated sections and the associated inlet and discharge fittings will be ready for assembly by the end of September. The above sections were ordered after complete preliminary tests defined the properties required of these test sections. Task C: Design and Construction of Test Stand: The mechanical design and drafting of the structural components and drive system is complete. The electrical control system for the platform orientation has been constructed and two modes of operation have received preliminary checkout on the breadboard circuit. Machining of the supported plates and assemblies and the main structural assembly of the stand are complete. Assembly of the platform and electrical components will be completed by the end of September and final alignment and adjustments will be caries out during October. Task E: Pressure and Temperature Instrumentation for Test Section: The temperature transducers have been ordered and their delivery is scheduled for the third week of September. The bridge circuits have been designed and their fabrication is in process. The preamplifiers and the power supply for the temperature transducers …
