''Follow that quarkexclamation'' (and other exclusive stories)

Description: Quarks are considered to be the basic constituents of matter. In a series of recent experiments, Carroll studied exclusive reactions as a means of determining the interactions between quarks. Quantum Chromo-dynamics (QCD) is the modern theory of the interaction of quarks. This theory explains how quarks are held together via the strong interaction in particles known as hadrons. Hadrons consisting of three quarks are called baryons. Hadrons made up of a quark and an antiquark are called mesons. … more

Fundamental Studies of Radiation Damage in Graphite

Description: Graphite expands linearly with irradiation at temperatures below 250 deg C and develops stored energy of the lattice because of interstitial and vacancy defects. Radiation changes such as stored energy and dimensional expansions can be removed by thermal annealing in which the graphite is removed from the radiation field and heated to a temperature above the irradiation temperature. The thermal annealing of irradiated graphites shows that the greater the irradiation dose, the greater is the rec… more

International safeguards: Accounting for nuclear materials

Description: Nuclear safeguards applied by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) are one element of the non-proliferation regime'', the collection of measures whose aim is to forestall the spread of nuclear weapons to countries that do not already possess them. Safeguards verifications provide evidence that nuclear materials in peaceful use for nuclear-power production are properly accounted for. Though carried out in cooperation with nuclear facility operators, the verifications can provide assuran… more

Neutrino Physics

Description: The prediction and verification of the neutrino are reviewed, together with the V-A theory for its interactions (particularly the difficulties with the apparent existence of two neutrinos and the high-energy cross section). The Brookhaven experiment confirming the existence of two neutrinos and the cross section increase with momentum is then described, and future neutrino experiments are considered. (D.C.W.)

Study of strange nuclei

Description: A brief history of the discovery of hypernuclei is given and some recent hypernuclei studies are described. Topics include the study of p-shell hypernuclei, /sup 12/C (K/sup -/, ..pi../sup -/) experiment, and hypernuclear gamma rays. 13 references. (WHK)

Whither energy: future shock or greening. [Lecture outlining factors for policy formulation]

Description: The U.S. stands on the threshold of new energy policies that will determine the future course of energy supply and demand. Society must accommodate itself over the next 30 years to reduced supplies of oil and gas and to higher energy costs. Dr. Hoffman states that analysis of the energy system and its relationship to the economy and environment has led to several findings that give promise for the future. Given some lead time, he feels that our economy can accommodate to increased energy scarci… more
