Calibration of G.M. Counters For Direct Counting of Radon in the Atmosphere

Description: An experiment has been carried out for the direct calibration of a Geiger-counter immersed in a balloon containing a known concentration of radon in equilibrium with its daughters. A theory was developed for finding out the geometrical efficiency of the counter used in this way, and for checking the experimental results with theoretical efficiency. The counters calibrated in this way may be useful for the direct measurement of radon in uranium mines and may also be useful for monitoring radioac… more

Cesium-137 and Strontium-90 in Milk

Description: Cesium-137 and strontium-90 levels in liquid milk samples from Bombay and 27 other stations in India, and powder milk samples from Australia, Denmark, Holland, India, U.K. and U.S.A/ have been estimated. The results of these measurements have been interpreted on the basis of the total injection of these isotopes in the atmosphere, their rate of fallout, and seasonal effects.

Estimates of Biospheric Contamination and Radiation Dose From Nuclear Explosions up to April 1962

Description: The production and dispersion of fission products and induced radioactivity from nuclear weapon tests are discussed. Estimates are given of the important radionuclides released by the tests conducted up to November 1961. Internal and external doses from fission products are calculated.

Evaluation Of Future Levels Of Radioactive Fallout

Description: The evaluations of future levels of strontium-90 deposition on the ground have been carried out for three different cases. 1. no more nuclear weapon tests are carried out after October 1958; 2. tests continue to be carried out at the same average rate as in the past; and 3. tests are carried out at the highest rate observed in the past, i.e. during the year 1958. These evaluations are done for Bombay, India, and are based on the ground deposition data on 1st October, 1958, and stratospheric inv… more

Evaluation of Hazards to Population From a Reactor Accident

Description: Consequent to an "accident" during the working of a nuclear reactor there is a possibility that radioactive fission products will get airborne. The airborne activity in the form of cloud will travel with the winds and the size of the cloud will increase as it travels downwind. There are several radiation hazards due to such a cloud and the extent of their hazard depends upon several conditions.

Measurements on the Environmental Radioactivity in India from Nuclear Weapon Tests. Data Collected During 1956-61

Description: In this report the data on the measurements of radio activity of air, rainwater, milk and a variety of food samples is tabulated. A brief outline of the sampling and counting procedures is also given. Interpretation and discussion of the results as well as further details of the methods of sampling and counting have already been given in the various reports published by this section. A bibliography of those reports is given at the end.

Measurements On The Ground Deposition Of Fission Products From Nuclear Test Explosions

Description: The fission products injected into the atmosphere by the test explosions of nuclear weapons are dispersed on a world-wide scale and ultimately deposited on the go=round surface by rain, gravity settling and impaction. The ground deposition of fission products constitutes the primary mechanism of contamination of foodstuffs and drinking water. This report gives the deposition levels of mixed-fission-products at the different sampling stations in India for the period 1956 to 1959.

Seasonal Variations of Cesium-137 In The Ground Level Air

Description: An increase in the cesium-137 content of the ground level air has been observed at Bombay during the spring seasons of the years 1957 to 1960. and a similar increase has been observed at seven other stations in India during 1960. The ratio of cesium-137 to gross beta activity have also been studied.

Strontium-90 In Milk And Human Bone In India

Description: Measurements of strontium-90 in samples of milk and human bone have been carried out in India at the AEET since early 1958. These measurements are useful in assessing the hazard of strontium-90 from fallout from the testing of nuclear weapons. This report describes briefly the sampling, analysis and measurement procedures and gives a summary of the data up to the middle of 1959.
