Coal-Mine Accidents in the United States and Foreign Countries

Description: From Introduction: "The lack of comparable and accurate statistics of coal-mine accidents in the united States as a whole led the Bureau of Mines in 1911 to undertake the collection of such data. The mining departments of the leading foreign coal-producing countries have long taken cognizance of the importance of statistics. The bureau feels that in presenting the tables embodied in this report it is offering the and comparable statistics of coal-min accidents for the country as a whole that have ever been published."

Coal-Washing Investigations: Methods and Tests

Description: From Introduction: "The investigations described in this bulletin are confined to a study of the washing characteristics of bituminous coals. The washing characteristics of coals from many of the most important coal-producing fields of the Eastern and Central States were examined."

Geology and Mineral Deposits of the Carlile Quadrangle, Crook County, Wyoming

Description: From introduction: Geologic mapping of the Carlile quadrangle, which includes one of several uranium-producing areas in northeastern Wyoming, was undertaken to provide a detailed geologic map that could be used as an aid to further exploration for uranium deposits; to study in detail the known uranium deposits to determine whether or not there are any relations among structure, stratigraphy, lithology, and uranium deposits; and to outline, insofar as possible, areas favorable for more detailed exploration for uranium.

Geology and Uranium Deposits of Part of the Browns Park Formation, Colorado, Wyoming, and Utah: a Preliminary Report

Description: From abstract: Uranium deposits and radioactivity anomalies have been found in the eastern half of the area underlain by the Browns Park formation in northwestern Colorado, south-central Wyoming, and northeastern Utah. The deposits are in eolian, lacustrine, and fluvial sandstones, tuffaceous sandstones, and limestones all of which were deposited on two converging pediments during Miocene time. At least one eastern and one western facies of lacustrine and fluvial sedimentary rocks are separated by a belt of eolian sandstones. The faces may be distinguished in the field and by petrographic and heavy-mineral studies in the laboratory.

Geology and Uranium Occurrences in the Miller Hill Area, Carbon County, Wyoming

Description: Abstract: Uranium occurs in the North Park(?) formation of Pliocene(?) age in the Miller Hill area, about 25 miles south of Rawlins, Carbon County, Wyo. As much as 0. 5 percent uranium is contained in grab samples, but only about 1000 tons of rock are known to contain as much as 0. 03 percent uranium. Beds of brecciated, silicified limestone 3 to 10 feet thick contain the principal concentrations of uranium. Lesser concentrations are found in calcareous sandstone and quartzite. Uranophane, Ca(UOz)2SizO 7 . 6HZO, the principal uranium'mineral, has been deposited in vugs, as fracture and surface coatings, and as a disseminated constituent of the rock. Uranium also occurs in quantities too small to be megascopically visible in dark-colored chalcedony, lime stone, sandstone, and quartzite beds.

Geology of Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Description: From abstract: Devils Tower is a steep-sided mass of igneous rock that rises above the surrounding hills and the valley of the Belle Fourche River in Crook County, Wyo. It is composed of a crystalline rock, classified as phonolite porphyry, that when fresh is gray but which weathers to green or brown. Vertical joints divide the rock mass into polygonal columns that extend from just above the base to the top of the Tower.
