1. K+ Charge Exchange - Search For K+ Charge Exchange

Description: An experiment was designed utilizing a charge-exchange reaction to study the decay and interactions of the neutral K mesons produced. The experiment produced no events that could be interpreted as either the decay or interaction of neutral K mesons. The nature of the experiment and the possible explanations of this unexpected result are presented in this paper.

The Chelate Process: [Part] 5. Investigation in Horizontal Extractors

Description: The recovery of plutonium has been demonstrated in a laboratory countercurrent horizontal extractor using the TTA process. Using three extractive stages and two washing stages in each step, a recovery of 91 percent has been obtained in the chelation step and a recovery of 99.9+ percent in the de-chelation step. With five extractive stages, recoveries of 94-98 percent have been found for the chelation step.

Electron Loading and High Voltage Sparking of Metals in Vacuum

Description: Statistical methods were employed to measure relative values of electron loading and spark-over voltage for a large number of unoutgassed electrode materials. Test voltages up to 110 KV were employed in vacuum of the order of 10-7 mm Hg. All metals showed a square root dependence between spark-over voltage and spacing.

II. K+ Charge Exchange - Production Of Ko Mesone By Charge Exchange Of K+ In Propane

Description: In another paper there was reported an attempt to observe the charge-exchange process in a counter-triggered multiplate cloud chamber at the Bevatron but the interpretation was ambiguous. Shortly after the close of that experiment the 30-in. propane bubble chamber at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory was completed and able to be used for a combined engineering test and experiment. The existence of Reaction (1) has been confirmed in this experiment, and an approximate cross-section value for car… more

Large Toroidal Stabilized Pinch Proposal

Description: This report focuses on the study of the stabilized pinch program made to increase the plasma temperature and improve the plasma conductivity and containment. One method proposed is the usage of a large toroidal stabilized pinch, which is described here.

Li⁶ and Li⁷ (n. 2n) Cross Sections at 14.1 Mev

Description: Abstract: "An absolute measurement of the 14.1-Mev (n, 2n) cross sections of Li-6 and Li-7 has been made using the large scintillator technique, resulting in cross sections in barns of 0.070 +/- 0.006 and 0.056 +/- 0.005 for Li-6 and Li-7, respectively."

The Measurement of Air Flow Through High Efficiency Filters

Description: Abstract. An inexpensive method for detection of dust-loaded high efficiency filters is described. Air flow is continuously indicated by elementary pitot tubes and plastic rotameters. Accuracy obtained is within +- 15%. Information as to construction, installation, and use is presented.

Modes of Acceleration of Ions in a 3-DEE Cyclotron.

Description: The analysis shows that a symmetrical three-dee cyclotron accelerating ions below relativistic velocities has the property that ions of different e/m rations can be accelerated without changing the frequency of the electrical power supplied to the dees or the value of the magnetic field. The energy gain per revolution of the ions which can be accelerated in the various modes are found, considering three identical dees of arbitrary angular widths. For these calculations it has been assumed tha… more

Neutron Production by High-Energy Particles

Description: Abstract: "From neutron-yield measurements made with a MnSO4 detecting solution, the average number of neutrons produced per inelastic event is determined for a series of elements from lithium to uranium for 340-Mev protons, 190-and 315-Mev deuterons, 490-Mev He3 ions, and 90- and 160-Mev neutrons. The results are analyzed in an attempt to understand the total yield measurements for thick targets and to explain the variation of yield with the atomic number of the target."

On the Mechanism of Generation of Magneto-Hydrodynamic Whirl Rings in the Interior of the Sun and Their Relation to Sunspots, Faculae, Prominences, and Flares

Description: Abstract: "A possible mechanism for the generation of magneto-hydrodynamic whirl rings near the center of the sun is described. The organic relation of the reflection of these whirl rings at the surface of the sun to the cooling of sunspots, orientation, and polarity sequence of sunspots, prominences, flares, and faculae is delineated."

Project Cowboy : Use of Large Cavities to Reduce Seismic Waves From Underground Explosions

Description: This technical report analyzes an experiment designed to test the theory of seismic decoupling of underground explosives proposed by Latter, LeLevier, Martinelli, and McMillan [1959]. The theory calculated the amplitude of a 1.7-kiloton nuclear explosive in a hole in salt and compares it to the measured value of the 1.7-kt Rainier shot in tuff at the same distance. A decoupling factor of about 300 resulted. The experiment, called Cowboy, was designed to test the decoupling principle by carryin… more

Reactions of the Refractory Silicides With Carbon and With Nitrogen

Description: Abstract: The silicides of Ti, Zr, Ce and Nb were investigated to determine the phases present at temperatures around 2000 K. The reactions of silicides of Ti, Zr, Ce, Nb, Ta, Mo, and W with carbon were studied at these temperatures. Also a limited amount of work was done on the reactions of some of the silicides with nitrogen. The data have been used to establish ternary phase diagrams for the systems and to obtain upper and lower limits for the heats of formation of the silicides.

Three Lectures On Controlled Thermonuclear Power Production

Description: This report was written from the notes used by Dr. York in delivering his three lectures on considerations pertinent to the problem of utilizing controlled thermonuclear reactions for the production of power. The first lecture discussed fundamental properties of the DD and DT reactions and the reacting substances. The second lecture described the stellarator, a proposed machine for the controlled production of power from the above reactions. The third lecture described the pinch effect and cons… more

Vibrational States Of The HD⁺ And HT⁺ Ions

Description: The vibrational eigenvalues belonging to the ground electronic state of the HD+ and HT+ ions have been calculated. These calculations have been done for the J = 0 rotational state and neglecting the dynamic corrections to the potential. For the HD+ ion we find twenty-two bound states, and for the HT+ ion twenty three bound states.
