Aerodynamic heating of a wing as determined from a free-flight rocket-model test to Mach number 3.64

Description: From Introduction: "The primary purpose of the wing instrumentation was to obtain data for use in design of NACA research missiles; however, it is believed that the wing is representative of typical supersonic designs and that the data will be of general use and interest. Only the wing data are reported herein."

Alternating Current and Square-Wave Polarography

Description: A exploratory study was made of a polarographic technique in which an alternating sine or square-wave potential is superimposed upon the applied d.c. potential of the polarographic scan. Recording of the a.c. component of the polarographic current results in derivative-type waves. It was shown that the technique yields greater sensitivity and greater selectivity than normal polarographic technique.

Component performance investigation of J71 experimental turbine 1: Over-all performance with 97-percent-design stator areas

Description: From Summary: "The over-all component performance characteristics of a J71 experimental three-stage turbine with 97 percent design stator areas were determined over a range of speed and pressure ratio at inlet-air conditions of approximately 35 inches of mercury absolute and 700 degrees R. The turbine break internal efficiency at design operating conditions was 0.877; the maximum efficiency of 0.886 occurred at a pressure ratio of 4.0 at 120 percent of design equivalent rotor speed. In general,… more

Component Performance Investigation of J71 Experimental Turbine 2 - Internal-Flow Conditions with 97-Percent-Design Stator Areas

Description: "An experimental investigation of the internal-flow conditions of a J71 experimental turbine equipped with 97-percent-design stator areas was conducted at equivalent design speed and near equivalent design work. The results of the investigation indicate that the stage work distribution closely approximates design, the actual distribution being 44.1, 33.4, and 22.5 percent for the first, second, and third stages, respectively. The first-, second-, and third-stage efficiencies were 0.894, 0.858, … more

Effect of inlet-duct length in uniform-flow field on turbojet-engine operation

Description: Report presenting a high-pressure-ratio axial-flow turbojet engine in the altitude wind tunnel to determine the effect of inlet-duct length on engine operation. Data were obtained with a short bellmouth inlet and a 20-foot duct section of uniform diameter between the inlet and compressor. Results regarding the steady-state characteristics, acceleration characteristics, compressor stall limits, and surge characteristics are provided.

The Effect of Oxidation on the Compession Strength of CE-CEF Graphite

Description: Limitations on the maximum temperature of the pile moderator have been imposed to prevent or control the gasification reaction of the graphite stack with the pile gas atmosphere. An uncontrolled reaction would cause a loss of structural strength, density, and thermal conductivity and would thus result in an unnecessary shortening of the effective operating life of the HAPO piles. Numerous studies have been made to define the rates of reaction of the pile stack with various components of the pil… more

The Effect of Oxidation on the Compression Strength of CS-GBF Graphite

Description: Data on the effects of oxidation on the compressive strength of graphite are presented. Results indicate that a rapid decrease in compressive strength in unirradiated graphite during initial oxidation, with a more gradual decrease during further oxidation. Irradiated samples exhibited greater compressive strength than non-irradiated. (J.R.D.)

Enthalpies and Heat Capacities of Solid and Molten Fluoride Mixtures

Description: The enthalpies and heat capacities of seventeen fluoride mixtures in the liquid state have been determined using Bunsen Ice Calorimeters and copper block calorimeters. The fluoride mixtures were composed of the fluorides of two or more of the following metals: lithium, sodium, potassium, beryllium, zirconium, and uranium. The enthalpies and heat capacities of most of these mixtures were studied in the solid state also. Estimates of the heat of fusion have been made. General empirical equations … more

Experiments on Polarization in Scatterig Deuterons from Complex Nuclei and in Proton-Proton Scattering (Thesis)

Description: Abstract: "The elastic double scattering of deuterons by complex nuclei has been investigated experimentally. Measurements were made on carbon, aluminum, and copper at around 157 Mev; on lithium, beryllium, and carbon at around 125 Mev; and on carbon and aluminum at 94 Mev. The expected tensor components of the deuteron polarization have not been observed. Measurements have been made of the differential cross section and vector-type polarization as a function of angle for the scattering of deut… more

Flutter Tests of a 1/25-Scale Model of the B-36J/RF-84F Tip-Coupled Airplane Configuration in the Langley 19-Foot Pressure Tunnel

Description: Report discussing tests of a model of a B-36J/RF-84F tip-coupled airplane to evaluate the flutter characteristics where bomber-body freedoms are allowed and to obtain information about the dynamic stability characteristics. The variables studied were the skew angle of the fighter-bomber coupling, the fighter longitudinal position, the fighter and bomber loading, angle of sideslip, degrees of body freedom, and number of fighters. Flutter was primarily found to occur when the fighter roll frequen… more

Investigation at high subsonic speeds of the static lateral and directional stability and tail-loads characteristics of a model having a highly tapered swept wing of aspect ratio 3 and two horizontal-tail positions

Description: Report presenting an investigation made in the 7- by 10-foot tunnel of the static lateral and directional stability and some tail-load characteristics of a model with a highly tapered swept wing and two horizontal-tail positions. Testing were made with the horizontal tail located at the tip of the swept vertical tail and with the horizontal tail located in the wing-chord plane extended. Results regarding static lateral and directional stability and vertical-tail loads are provided.
