3-D numerical analysis of a high-gain free-electron laser

Description: We present a novel approach to the 3-dimensional high-gain free- electron laser amplifier problem. The method allows us to write the laser field as an integral equation which can be efficiently and accurately evaluated on a small computer. The model is general enough to allow the inclusion of various initial electron beam distributions to study the gain reduction mechanism and its dependence on the physical parameters. 16 refs., 8 figs., 1 tab.

Absolute measurement of neutron cross sections. Progress report

Description: The procedures and status of the absolute measurement of the neutron capture cross sections for /sup 115/In and /sup 232/Th are described. Work on the /sup 239/Pu fission fragment anisotropy and absolute measurement of the fast neutron fission cross section for /sup 233/U are briefly described. Progress in establishing the 14 MeV neutron measurements at the facility are discussed. (WHK)

Description: This report quantifies certain characteristics of the rotary bayonets and associated platform piping on the DO detector. Analytical theory of ion-temperature-gradient instability

Description: The relationship between the threshold values of ion-temperature-gradient instabilities and the temperature parameters of plasmas is investigated analytically in slab and toroidal geometries separately. It is found that the threshold values increase rapidly when the ion temperature becomes much higher than the electron temperature. Caribbean Basin Initiative

Description: The Reagan Administration has proposed legislation which would seek to use trade and aid to promote political stability and economic growth in the Caribbean Basin region. Among other things, it would create a one-way free trade zone, where the small nations of the region would have an opportunity for export-led growth through duty-free access to the U.S. market. It would also provide $350 million in economic aid for 1982 to El Salvador and other Caribbean countries.

Consequences of toroidal effects in lower hybrid heating of tokamaks

Description: The lower hybrid slow wave tends to follow magnetic field lines. The coupling of stimulated Raman and Brillouin scattering in a plasma

Description: The observation of an anti-Stokes satellite in the spectrum of light backscattered from a CO{sub 2} laser plasma is reported. Its origin is found to be Thomson scattering of the incident light from a counterpropagating mode-coupled plasma wave. The parent electron and ion waves in the mode-coupling process were driven by stimulated Raman and Brillouin backscattering. D0 CC Cryostat Test Cooldown - Cooldown Time

Description: The D0 CC Cryostat is to be cold tested with LN{sub 2}. Calculations show that the time required for the 12.5 ton stainless steel inner vessel to reach equilibrium is around 5 hours if the vessel is cooled by introducing liquid into a nozzle at the bottom.
