Description: From Summary: "An analytical investigation was made to determine from component performance characteristics the effect of air bleed at the compressor outlet on the acceleration characteristics of a typical high-pressure-ratio single-spool turbojet engine. Consideration of several operating lines on the compressor performance map with two turbine-inlet temperatures showed that for a minimum acceleration time the turbine-inlet temperature should be the maximum allowable, and the operating line on the compressor map should be as close to the surge region as possible throughout the speed range. Operation along such a line would require a continuously varying bleed area."

Additional Results on the Static Longitudinal and Lateral Stability Characteristics of a 0.05-Scale Model of the Convair F2Y-1 Airplane at High Subsonic Speeds

Description: Additional results on the static longitudinal and lateral stability characteristics of a 0.05-scale model of the Convair F2Y-1 water-based fighter airplane were obtained in the Langley high-speed 7- by 10-foot tunnel over a Mach number range of 0.50 to 0.92. The maximum angle-of-attack range (obtained at the lower Mach numbers) was from -2 degrees to 25 degrees. The sideslip-angle range investigated was from -4 degrees to 12 degrees. The investigation included effects of various arrangements of wing fences, leading-edge chord-extensions, and leading-edge notches. Various fuselage fences, spoilers, and a dive brake also were investigated. From overall considerations of lift, drag, and pitching moments, it appears that there were two modifications somewhat superior to any of the others investigated: One was a configuration that employed a full-chord fence and a partial-chord fence located at 0.63 semispan and 0.55 semispan, respectively. The second was a leading-edge chord-extension that extended from 0.68 semispan to 0.85 semispan in combination with a leading-edge notch located at 0.68 semispan. With plus or minus 10 degrees aileron, the estimated wing-tip helix angle was reduced from 0.125 at a Mach number of 0.50 to 0.088 at a Mach number of 0.92, with corresponding rates of roll of 4.0 and 5.2 radians per second. The upper aft fuselage dive brake, when deflected 30 degrees and 60 degrees, reduced the rudder effectiveness about 10 to 20 percent and about 35 to 50 percent, respectively.

Aerodynamic characteristics of a full-span trailing-edge control on a 60 degree delta wing with and without a spoiler at Mach number 1.61

Description: Report presenting an investigation at Mach number 1.61. to determine the aerodynamic characteristics of a full-span trailing-edge control on a 60 degree delta wing with and without a partial-span spoiler mounted on the wing just ahead of the control. Pressure distribution and hinge-moment measurements were made over a range of angles of attack and control deflection. Results indicated that regions of increase pressure due to flow separation ahead of the control at the larger control deflections and ahead of the spoiler exist.

An air-borne target simulator for use with scope-presentation type fire-control systems

Altitude-chamber performance of British Rolls-Royce Nene II engine: III - 18.00-inch-diameter jet nozzle

Description: An altitude-chamber investigation of British Rolls-Royce Nene II turbojet engine was conducted over range of altitudes from sea level to 65,000 feet and ram pressure ratios from 1.10 to 3.50, using an 18.00-inch-diameter jet nozzle. The 18.00-inch-diameter jet nozzle gave slightly lower values of net-thrust specific fuel consumption than either the 18.41- or the standard 18.75-inch-diameter jet nozzles at high flight speeds. At low flight speeds, the 18.41-inch-diameter jet nozzle gave the lowest value of net-thrust specific fuel consumption.

Damping in roll of straight and 45 degree swept wings of various taper ratios determined at high subsonic, transonic, and supersonic speeds with rocket-powered models

Description: Report presenting rocket-powered flight testing to determine the damping in roll of several wings of 0 degree and 45 degree quarter-chord-line sweep with various taper ratios for a range of Mach numbers. Damping in roll decreased with decreasing taper ratio at roughly the same rate for swept and unswept wings and also decreased by sweeping the quarter-chord line. The experimental results were also consistently lower than what was predicted by theory.

Design and Test of Mixed-Flow Impellers 3: Design and Experimental Results for Impeller Model MFI-2A and Comparison With Impeller Model MFI-1A

Description: "A mixed-flow impeller was designed to give a prescribed blade-surface velocity distribution at mean blade height for a given hub-shroud profile. The blade shape at mean blade height, which was produced by the prescribed velocity distribution, was extended by means of radial lines to form the composite blade shape from hub to shroud. The resulting blade was relatively thick; therefore, it was necessary to retain the inverse blade taper which resulted from extension of the radial lines in order to prevent merging or near merging of the separate blades near the hub. For the first test version of the impeller, designated the MFI-2A, the blade height was arbitrarily made greater than that for the basic impeller (the MFI-2) to allow for viscous effects" (p. 1).
