327 Basin Aluminum Corrosion Test

Description: An investigation of corrosion in the 327 Building's water storage basin was made to determine whether the static storage of aluminum jacketed fuel elements could cause corrosion effects that would interfere with studies of in-pile corrosion.

N.A.C.A. Stall-Warning Device

Description: With some airplanes the approach to the stall is accompanied by changes in the behavior, such as tail buffeting or changes in the control characteristics of the airplane so that the pilot obtains a warning of the impending stall. Vith other airplanes it is possible to approach the stall without any perceptible warning other than the reading of the air-speed meter, in which case the danger of inadvertent stalling is considerably greater. Although it is not within the scope of this paper to discu… more

Abscopal Effects of Localized Irradiation by Accelerator Beams

Description: The aim of this series of experiments was to evaluate the existence of abscopal effects of irradiation. No attempt was made towards the elucidation of mechanisms. Very early in the history of radiological research it was noticed radiation produces both local and general effects involving the entire body. Gauss and Lembcke introduced the term "Roentgenkater" (radiation sickness). They ascribed these "General Effects" to the circulation of toxic substances released from cells that disintegrated f… more

Absorption by Soil of Strontium From 216-S Crib Waste

Description: A preliminary soil column experiment with a waste sample from the 207-S-11 well, which monitors the 216-S cribs, indicated that cesium was absorbed almost completely by the soil but that strontium breakthrough to ground water in the near future seemed likely. Accordingly, it was suggested that the 216-S wastes be discharged to a new disposal site, and that samples of the wastes which are currently being discharged to the 216-S cribs be obtained for soil absorption tests. The primary purpose of … more

Absorption Spectra of Lanthanide and Actinide Rare Earths

Description: "In recent years a group of Dutch workers has measured the absorption spectra of all the rare earth elements (save promethium) in hydrochloric or nitric acid solutions, and their results have been summarized by Hoogschagen and Gorter."

Accelerations in Landing with a Tricycle-Type Landing Gear

Description: "In connection with the application of stable tricycle-type landing gears to transport airplanes, the question arises as to whether certain passengers may not experience relatively great accelerations in an emergency landing. Since the main landing wheels are behind the center of gravity in this type of gear, a hard-braked landing will cause immediate nosing down of the airplane and, when this motion is stopped due to the front wheel striking the ground, there will be some tendency for the rear… more

Accelerations in Transport-Airplane Crashes

Description: From Introduction: "A study of crash-impact survival in light airplanes is reported in references 1 and 2. A similar study for fighter airplanes is reported in reference 3. This report discusses crash-impact survival in transport airplanes."

An accurate and rapid method for the design of supersonic nozzles

Description: From Introduction: "This report presents a computational procedure which provides for the rapid and accurate calculation of any streamline in a series of special flows. Detailed information is given on the boundary conditions and equations used for computing the characteristic nets and stream function."

Acoustic Leak Detection for District Heating Systems

Description: An acoustic leak detection facility was completed and used to evaluate the capability of piezoelectric sensors, accelerometers, and capacitance microphones to detect and locate gas and water leaks in underground district heating and cooling (DHC) piping. Leak detection sensitivity and location capabilities for DHC systems were estimated from laboratory data and from data obtained from the underground DH system in Scranton, Pennsylvania, where acoustic background noise levels and acoustic signal… more

Addition of Heat to a Compressible Fluid in Motion

Description: From Introduction: "The purpose of this report is to summarize, without extended proofs, the results of a study of a simplified model of nonadiabiatic, compressible fluid flow, both subsonic and supersonic, and to state these results in a form that will make them immediately useful in providing a theoretical background for current technical problems of high-speed combustion.

Additional Experiments With Flat-Top Wing- Body Combinations at High Supersonic Speeds

Description: Memorandum presenting an experimental study of the effects of several variations in configuration geometry on the aerodynamic characteristics of flat-top wing-body combinations. Generally, the configurations consist of one half of a body of revolution mounted beneath a wing of essentially arrow plan form. Results regarding the effect of trailing-edge sweep, effect of the addition of auxiliary bodies, effect of tip-flap deflection, effect of dihedral, effect of leading-edge sweep, effect of fuse… more
