Description: Abstract: Distribution coefficients have been measured for the partition of metal ions between cation exchange resin and acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions. the differences in distribution coefficients of metal ions are greater in acetone-water media than in aqueous media of the same hydrochloric acid concentration. Using distribution coefficient data, conditions for column separations of mixtures can be selected. Column separations of metal ion mixtures can be effected by eluting with acetone-water-hydrochloric acid solutions of different compositions. Successful separations of a number of mixtures are reported.

Description: Abstract Line spectra of vanadium, niobium, titanium, molybdenum and rhenium of sufficient intensity to allow detection at the 1–10 p.p.m. level can be excited in fuel-rich, oxy-acetylene flames. For the strongest lines of tungsten, the sensitivity of detection is 90 p.p.m. Weak lines of zirconium, hafnium, osmium, tantalum and uranium are also observed in these flames. Recordings of the spectra are given along with wavelength tables of the strongest lines.

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The MBr3 + M phase diagrams for lanthanum, cerium, and praseodymium are presented. Lanthanum and cerium exhibit simple solutions of metal, with 14 and 12 mole % dissolved at eutectic temperatures of 728 and 687°, respectively. The compound PrBr2.38 is found, melting incongruently to a solution of 16% Pr in PRBr3 and Pr(s) at 601°. For praseodymium the cryoscopic behavior of dilute solutions of metal is consistent with the primary formation of the Pr2+ solute. But with lanthanum and cerium the results are anomalous, as the cryoscopic analyses indicate 1.6-1.7 and 2.0 new particles (cation basis) per metal dissolved instead of ~3."

Boiling Points and Surface Tensions of Mixtures of Benzyl Acetate With Dioxan, Aniline and Meta-Cresol
Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Accurate measurements on boiling points and surface tensions of mixtures of benzyl acetate with dioxan, aniline and meta-cresol over the entire range of concentration are reported. The results have been analysed in terms of quasi-crystalline model which is partially successful in representing the composition dependence of heats of mixing, boiling points and surface tension except for composition dependence of boiling points of benzyl acetate and meta-cresol."

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "Paramagnetic susceptibilities of samarium structure alloys in the systems La-Gd, Nd-Y, Nd-Tm, and Ce-Y were measured from 4.2 - 300°K to determine what effect the formation of this structure has on the magnetic properties of the alloys. Susceptibility maxima were observed in the Nd-Y and Nd-Tm alloys, at 34.5 and 28.5°K, respectively. Slope changes were observed in the curve of 1/x versus T for the La-Gd alloy at 155 and 130°K, and the susceptibility of this alloy remained temperature-independent from 130-7°K. A rather poorly defined region of constant susceptibility was also observed or the Ce-Y alloy, from 26-37°K. Above these transition temperatures, the alloys obeyed the Curie-Weiss law, the susceptibilities of the La-Gd and Ce-Y samples indicating the possibility of electron transfer occurring in these cases."

Description: Technical report. From Summary : "At the present time arsenazo appears to be widely used for the spectrophotometric determination of rare earths. Unfortunately, the method is not selective. The separation of rare earths and yttrium from interfering elements has been studied, and the following method has been proposed. Rare earths are precipitated as fluorides using fluorides using calcium fluoride as the carrier. Thorium and zirconium are removed by extraction with thenoyltrifluoroacetone (TTA) in xylene at pH 1.3. Small amounts of residual aluminum, iron, etc. are removed by extraction with 8-quinolinolchloroform at pH 4.5. Rare earths are separated from calcium by TTA extraction at the same pH, and they are then back-extracted into 1 M nitric acid. After evaporation of the solution, the rare earths are determined spectrophotometrically with arsenazo."

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The acidity of a solution of acid, HX, and salt, MX, is affected by both the concentration of X- and M+ owing to incomplete dissociation of the salt, MX. it was possible to increase the acidity of a solution of 2,6-di-tert-butylphenol - tetrabutylammonium 2,6-di-tert-butylphenolate relative to a dilute solution of tetrabutylammonium hydroxide by increasing the tetrabutylammonium bromide content. This indicates that the dissociation constant of the hydroxide base is sufficiently large that extensive dissociation occurs in dilute solutions. The addition of tetrabutylammonium bromide is therefore recommended as a general method for increasing the acidity and improving the titration characteristics of extremely weak acids."

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The silver-1,10-phenanthroline system has been studied and the stability constants determined for the 1:1 and 2:1 complexes using the silver electrode. This known system was then used to study the complexes of 1,10-phenanthroline with other metals. The log βn values found for the over-all stoichiometric stability constants are as follows: Ag, 5.02, 12.07; Mn, 3.88, 7.04, 10.11; Cd, 5.93, 10.52, 14.30; Zn, 6.83, 12.05, 16.92. The stoichiometric stability constants determined for copper are log k2 = 6.42 and log k2k3 = 11.05."

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The scandium-yttrium and scandium-zirconium were studied by thermal and x-ray methods. Both systems are characterized by complete solid solubility in the low temperature hexagonal form and in the high temperature bcc form. In the Sc-Y system, there is a minimum in the solidus at 50 at. pct and 1365°C, while the solidus in the Sc-Zr system follows a nearly straight line relationship between the melting point of scandium and zirconium. There is a minimum in the temperature of transition from hexagonal to bcc in the Sc-Y system at 43 at. pct Y and 1175°C; while the temperature of transition is raised in the Sc-Zr system to a maximum of 1415°C at 30 at. pct Zr."

Description: Technical report. From report : "The method of least squares refinement is based on the prediction of the theory of errors that, if the errors of the observed structure factors follow the Gaussian distribution, the most nearly correct atomic parameters will be those which result in the minimization of the residual R = Σi [√wi(|Fo| - |Fc|)i]2."

Description: Technical report. From Abstract : "The crystal structure of bis(meta-chlorobenzoyl) methane has been determined by three dimensional anisotropic least squares refinement of scintillation counter data. The molecule was found to be nearly planar with a maximum deviation from the least squares molecular plane of 0.068Å and an average deviation of 0.023Å. Fourier transform techniques to locate phenyl rings provided the key to the structure determination. The intramolecular bond distances and thermal parameters of the oxygen atoms support a resonant, enol ring with a symmetric, intramolecular hydrogen bond. The structure confirms conslusions from the structure of bis(meta-bromobenzoyl) methane where the symmetry of the molecule was forced by the crystal symmetry."
