Analysis of a thermal ice-prevention system for wing leading-edge landing-light installations

Description: From Introduction: "A typical ice formation on a wing leading-edge-type light installation is shown in figure 1. Although the primary purpose of this analytic investigation was to determine the practicability of providing a landing-light thermal ice-prevention system which could be incorporated with the wing leading-edge thermal ice-prevention system of the B-17 F airplane, the analysis has been developed in a general form for future application to similar deigns. Boundary-Layer Transition on the N.A.C.A. 0012 and 23012 Airfoils in the 8-Foot High-Speed Wind Tunnel

Description: Report presenting determinations of boundary-layer transition on the NACA 0012 and 23012 airfoils in the high-speed wind tunnel over a range of Reynolds numbers. For all of the lift coefficients that testing occurred at, transition occurred in the region of estimated laminar separation at low Reynolds numbers and approached the point of minimum static pressure as a forward limit at high Reynolds numbers.

The wing was also tested with 0.2 chord split flaps, deflected 60 degrees, in the center of the wing and having flat span to wing span ratios of 0.3, 0.5, 0.7, and 1.0, respectively" (p. 1).

Charts of Pressure, Density, and Temperature Changes at an Abrupt Increase in Cross-Sectional Area of Flow of Compressible Air

Description: "Equations have been derived for the change in the quantities that define the thermodynamic state of air - pressure, density, and temperature - at an abrupt increase in cross-sectional area of flow of compressible air. Results calculated from these equations are given in a table and are plotted as curves showing the variation of the calculated qualities with the area expansion ratio in terms of the initial Mach number as parameter. Only the subsonic region of flow is considered" (p. 1).

Collection of Balanced-Aileron Test Data

Description: "Test data of balanced ailerons have been collected from NACA and British sources. These data, which are presented in the form of charts, are grouped as A - ailerons with Frise balances, B - ailerons with blunt-nose balances, C - ailerons with internal balances, D - ailerons with contour modifications, and E - ailerons with tabs. Results of flight tests and of wind-tunnel tests in both two- and three-dimensional flow are presented but no correlation nor resume of the data has been included" (p.… more

Comparison of an approximate and an exact method of shear-lag analysis

Description: Report presenting comparisons between the approximate substitute single-stringer method of shear-lag analysis and the exact solutions, which indicate that for beams of practical proportions the approximate method yields a value for the maximum root stress that exceeds the value obtained by use of the exact solution by less than 10 percent.

Comparison of various methods for computing drag from wake surveys

Description: "The various equations for computing profile drag by the momentum method are examined, and the errors arising from complete or partial neglect of compressibility effects in the Jones equation and the Bicknell equation are evaluated. The integrating method of Silverstein and Katzoff is shown to be accurate over a wide range of Mach number and wake shapes" (p. 1).

Compressible potential flow with circulation about a circular cylinder

Description: Report presenting the potential function for flow, with circulation, of a compressible fluid about a circular cylinder, which is obtained in series form including terms of the order of M(exp 4) where M is the Mach number of the free stream. The equations are used to obtain pressure coefficient as a function of Mach number at a point on the surface of the cylinder for different values of circulation.

Compressive Strength of Corrugated-Sheet-Stiffened Panels for Consolidated XB-36 Airplane

Description: "Compression tests were made of 63 panels stiffened with corrugated sheet. The specimens were constructed from artificially aged alclad 24S-T aluminum alloy with minimum guaranteed yield strengths of 57 and 48 kips per square inch for the flat- and corrugated-sheet materials, respectively. Results of the tests are presented in charts which show the average stresses at the maximum load and at buckling of the sheet" (p. 1).

Correlation of Engine-Cooling Data

Description: Report discusses a method of correlating engine-cooling data and its application to a representative engine-cooling test. Considerations for the correlation method are given, but the application to specific engine-cooling problems should be simple and direct. Information about experimental procedure and an example with specific values are included.

Correlation of Mixture Temperature Data Obtained From Bare Intake-Manifold Thermocouples

Description: "A relatively simple equation has been found to express with fair accuracy, variation in manifold-charge temperature with charge in engine operating conditions. This equation and associated curves have been checked by multi cylinder-engine data, both test stand and flight, over a wide range of operating conditions. Average mixture temperatures, predicted by the equations of this report, agree reasonably well with results within the same range of carburetor-air temperatures from laboratories and… more

Correlation of Wright Aeronautical Corporation Cooling Data on the R-3350-14 Intermediate Engine and Comparison With Data From the Langley 16-Foot High-Speed Tunnel

Description: Report presenting a comparison of the cooling-test data obtained on the identical Wright R-3350-14 engine equipped with the same cooling pressure-tube installation. The comparison reveals the large difference in cooling pressure drop that may be obtained in different test installations with the identical engine and pressure-tube installation because of an injudicious choice of pressure-tube locations.

Results are presented in form of sequence photographs and time-history curves for attitudes, vertical and horizontal displacements, and longitudinal decelerations. Time-history curves for attitudes and horizontal and vertical displacements for model and full-scale tests were in agreement; maximum longitu… more

Determination of the Effect of Wing Flexibility on Lateral Maneuverability and a Comparison of Calculated Rolling Effectiveness With Flight Results

Description: Report presenting an analysis which shows that, when account is taken of sideslip and wing flexibility, the calculated rolling maneuverability of an airplane is in good agreement with the results obtained from flight tests. The method used avoids the complications of successive approximations but is nevertheless believed to be more nearly accurate than other methods based on semirigid-wing assumptions. The method is applied to a wing of tubular shell construction and the procedure is illustrate… more
