80" Bubble Chamber Expansion System Preliminary Operating Procedures

Description: These procedures are intended to be used for the initial operation of the expansion system and serve as a basis for a more complete and revised form to be written once operating experience has been gained. An attempt has been made to offer a logical and systematic presentation to facilitate operation and maintenance of the system by the operating personnel. Thus, the sequence of valve actuations has been presented in matrix and check list form to minimize errors; this also has the advantage of … more

80" Bubble Chamber Expansion System Summary of Piston Motion Studies

Description: Prior to assembly into the 80" bubble chamber, the expansion system was subjected to a series of tests to check piston dynamics and gain information on the reliability of the various components. Furthermore, the rest provided operating personnel with the opportunity to become familiar with the operation and maintenance of the expansion system. Two separate tests were performed with the apparatus that was located at the north end of the AGS experimental area; one during the week of Oct. 15 and t… more

Accidental nuclear excursion recuplex operation 234-5 facility: Final medical report

Description: The April 7, 1962 criticality accident involving human exposures was the first to have occurred in any production facility at Hanford. The accidental nuclear excursion did not result in any mechanical damage or spread of contamination. Three employees received over-exposure to gamma and neutron radiation. None were fatally exposed and in each case the over-exposure was recognized promptly. Following an initial period of medical observation and testing, the men were released to work. They contin… more

The Adsorption and Surface Reactions of Hydrocarbons on Clean Iridium

Description: From abstract: "The adsorption of ethane, ethylene and acetylene on clean iridium in a field emission microscope has been found to cause characteristic changes in the work function of the iridium surface. Further changes, which are time and temperature dependent, result when such surfaces are heated. Flash filament experiments have shown that the changes in work function upon heating are due to desorption reactions and that the desorbed product consists principally of hydrogen. By assuming a li… more

AlSi slopovers: studies, method of elimination and results

Description: During fuel element assembly, a dip-brazing process., the aluminum can which is ultimately a jacket for a uranium core is protected from the molten AlSi solution by a steel sleeve. Once the can is inserted into the sleeve and thermal expansion is complete, upset metal rings prevent molten AlSi from flowing between the can and sleeve, a situation that warrants rejection. Passage of molten solution beyond upset metal to a point on the can wall not removed during the subsequent facing operation is… more

Analog and Digital Readout on an IBM Output Writer

Description: Abstract: A control system to provide digital printing and to plot an analog trace on an electric operated IBM model 11C Output Writer is described. The Digital mode of operation translates multidigit numbers through a set of commands to print each digit serially, then presents them to the output writer in a time sequence. The Analog mode of operation converts a d.c. input voltage to a digital number and by tab and space bar commands translates the carriage horizontally a distance proportion… more

APDAC-I, A PCTR Data Analysis Code for the IBM 709

Description: A flexible foil data processing program is described. Raw data on foil radioactivity are the basic input information required. Output may consists of relative activities, saturated activities, and/or cadmium ratio and flux spectrum data. A statistical analysis of the data is executed with the direct calculation, and errors estimated for the output data.

Aqueous Processing of Thorium Fuels, Part 2

Description: The status of aqueous processing methods for tharium fuels is reviewed. A specially designed 250-ton shear was successfully tested for shearing full-size simulated Consolidated Edison type unirradiated assemblies into 0.25-1.5 in. lengths.

Bibliography on Pion-Pion Interaction

Description: A bibliography on pion-pion interactions is presented. The 241 references are those available through November 7, 1961. A chronological listing is given together with excerpts or comments. In another part the references are grouped according to subject. An author index is included. (M.C.G.)

The Boron-Carbon System: Final Technical Report, May 1, 1960 - April 30, 1961

Description: Abstract: The boron-carbon equilibrium diagram has been determined by X-ray, metallographic, and thermal analysis of sintered and arc-cast alloys. A single carbide having a range of solubility from approximately 9 to 20 a/o carbon and melting congruently exists in the system. The terminal solubility of carbon in boron is 0.1-0.2a/o. The freezing reaction at the composition and melting temperature of elemental boron; there is a eutectic reaction at 29a/o carbon and 2375 degrees Celcius. No allot… more

Calculation of the Shock Wave From an Underground Nuclear Explosion in Granite

Description: The capability of calculating the close-in effects of the shock wave from an underground nuclear explosion has been demonstrated. Agreement was obtained between calculation and measurements using .a spherically symmetric, hydrodynamic, elastic-plastic code called SOC for the Hardhat event, a 5-kiloton nuclear detonation in granite. This capability is dependent upon having a more or less complete de scription of the elastic and dynamic properties of the materials involved. When this information … more

A Comparison of OH- Motions in Brucite and Micas

Description: Despite similar atomic arrangement, Brucite (Mg(OH)2) and phlogopite (KMg3(OH)2(Al,Si3)O10) present striking difference in their infrared spectra. A single absorption band is observed in phlogopite whence brucite possesses a total of 15 bands on both sides of the fundamental. A comparison of the hydroxides with micas provides supporting evidence that the complexity of the hydroxide spectra is due to interactions between neighboring hydroxyl groups. Each mineral contains a layer of magnesium ion… more

Correction to the Debye-Huckel Theory

Description: In a recent paper, Bowers and Salpeter described a method for calculating the correlation energy of a classical one-component electron gas. The same problem has been considered by Meeron, Friedman, and Abe, using methods involving the summation of cert infinite classes of diagrams. While the relation between these theories and that of Bowers and Saltpeter is not year clear, it is interesting to note that Abe obtained an equivalent expression by approximating an integral. We have calculated the … more

Correlation of Kinetic Isotope Effects with Chemical Bonding in Three Center Reactions

Description: We consider the kinetic isotope effect in three center reactions of the type of A+BC→AB+C. Such model calculations are a good approximation to primary hydrogen isotope effects. For abstraction or transfer reactions, B becomes H, D, or T. The dynamics of the three storm system are calculated for a general quadratic potential, with the assumption that the potential energy is constant along the reaction coordinate (flat top barrier). This model system can be calculated in detail and serves to illu… more

Current Studies of Fission Product Behavior at BNL

Description: Programs are under way at Brookhaven National Laboratory to study the behavior of fission products released from reactor fuel materials. Major emphasis has been placed on fission product iodine because of the physiological hazard associated with the I131 isotope. A complete reactor safety analysis, considering either a slow or rapid release of fission products, requires a knowledge of the chemical and physical states of the fission products during release, the extent of their release, and an un… more

Darex Process: Processing of Stainless Steel-Containing Reactor Fuels with Dilute Aqua Regia

Description: From abstract: "The Darex process developed for the recovery of uranium from stainless steel-containing reactor fuels consists of three steps: (1) dissolution of the fuel material in dilute aqua regia, (2) removal of chloride from the solution to prevent corrosion of downstream stainless steel process equipment, and (3) adjustment of the nitrate solution to solvent extraction feed conditions."
