[Burgher's House]

Calotte

Description: Calotte of beaded black satin. Evening hat in the form of a calotte (also spelled "calot"). The low, domed crown is made of segments of black satin over a core of woven straw. The surface is embellished with black plastic sequins and beads of various sizes. At top of crown is small squashed spheroid finial covered with a pattern of cylindrical and circular faceted black plastic beads. Inside lower edge of crown is black grosgrain ribbon band. Sewn behind band are three elastic loops to help secure hat to head of wearer. No labels.

Description: Calotte style hat in cut out triangular shape of white leather with white glass beaded edges on leather strips. Bow of same on center front top. Bow at center back of white glass beads. Navy veil. Two small combs, one attached on each side. Designer's label on inside band: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago"

Description: Calotte style hat of white simulated alligator in free form with 3 bows of same. Hat and bows trimmed with white glass beads. Two brown combs attached to inside grosgrain hatband for securing hat to head. Navy veil interspersed with groups of 3 white glass beads matching those on hat. Designer's label: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago" Handwritten label attached to hatband: "82"

Cloche

Description: Cloche hat of medium brown coiled and plaited fibers. The high crown is crafted of spiraling band of plaited and coiled brown yarn(?)and incorporates looped sections, with iridescent flat ribbon wrapped around elements of the band. There is a horizontal "tuck" at back of hat, and a slight "visor" effect at front. The hat is unlined. Retailer's label sewn inside crown: "Made in France for / Neiman-Marcus". While in the style of a 1920's/1930's cloche, the materials, label, and construction date this piece to the 1960's.

Bound buttonholes on coat and belt. Seven inch wide black dyed fox fur trimmed hemline. Vertical, single-welt pockets at each side. Lined in white silk satin. Description: Coat of vertical pieced tan mink fur with notched collar and wide, long sleeves. Three concealed hook-and-eyes down center front. Two slit pockets at front, lined in velvet. Below hip-length. Fully lined in taupe satin, with decorative stitching inside front and taupe leather facing on inside of opening. Retailer's label inside back at collar: "Koslow's / Fort Worth" Former owner's name embroidered inside right side: "Kitty Wilson".

Description: Coat of navy blue wool and black lamb. Street length, of heavy navy blue wool, rounded neckline with wide "rolled" collar. Center front opening off-center to left, with hidden snap near throat and 6 buttons in concealed placket. Princess seaming for fit and flare, and with two slit pockets at hips behind side seam, which continues to form a pleat below pocket. Full-length sleeves with wide black cuffs of curly lamb/Astrakhan. Seaming at sides forms a pleated effect from waist to hem. Fully lined in dark blue silk(?) crepe. Designer's label at inside back neckline: "Gallanos" Retailer's label at inside left seam: "Neiman-Marcus"

Description: Coat of lion fur. Calf-length, double-breasted, long sleeved. Large collar and revers of lion's mane. Two buttons placed horizontally below bust. Buttons are an iridescent brown plastic with centers of snake (reptile). Lined in dark orange/rust silk. Slit pockets at front, lined in brown velvet/plush. Furrier's label at inside back neckline: "[Royal warrant to HM The Queen] [Royal warrant to HM The Queen Mother] / Calman Links / London" With accompanying belt of supple tan leather with metal (brass or bronze) buckle formed as a slightly abstracted "fan" shape.
