Ensemble - Coat and Dress

Description: Ensemble of printed silk. The full-length dress is of silk with a printed design of abstract flower forms in red, blue, purple, white, yellow and green on a black ground. It has a rounded neckline and long sleeves which have fabric covered snaps at the wrists. The bodice is seamed and fitted, and the skirt is slightly A-line, flaring to hem. Center back closure, top third is hook-and-eyes, the lower two-thirds is a zipper. The dress is fully lined in black silk. Designer's label sewn inside bodice near waist: "Givenchy". Underneath label is a second label with handwritten notation "48245". The matching coat is of the same print on a heavier weight silk. It is full-length, with a standing collar which has internal wiring for support. The sleeves are full-length, and it has a center front opening which secures with a single fabric-covered snap just below collar. The coat is unlined. Designer's label sewn inside coat at right near waist: "Givenchy". Underneath label is a second label with handwritten notation "48246" This ensemble was made for the donor to wear to the wedding of Maria del Carmen Martinez-Bordiu y Franco, (1951- ) granddaughter of General Franco, to Don Alfonso, Duke of Anjou and Cádiz (1936 - 1989), son of Infante Jaime of Spain, Duke of Segovia and grandson of King Alfonso XIII of Spain. The wedding took place in the chapel of El Pardo Palace, Madrid, on 8th March 1972. The donor noted: "It was designed by Monsieur Givenchy especially for me. Balenciaga was alive, though he had closed his house, and Givenchy consulted with him on this outfit. You can see Balenciaga's line to it. ... Evening Gown

Description: Evening gown of heavy-weight bronze silk with metallic gold, red, green and brown silk embroidery. Strapless sheath silhouette trimmed with brown velvet above bust, and embellished with heavy beading at the bodice. Train cascades from inside back of bodice; multiple hook and eye closures with zipper; lined with orange acetate. Designer's label: "Marta de Diego"

Description: Folding fan with wooden sticks and guards, and paper leaf. The guards have applied celluloid(?) panels, the lower sections plain and the upper decorated with pastel "scales" in blue and yellow. Set with colored stones in square recesses. The paper leaf is painted on one side with a stylized design of clusters of roses in reds, pinks, and yellow/orange on a pink/mauve ground with blue shapes. "U"-shaped bail ring at bottom.

On the leaf are three printed vignettes: 1) view of a street through an archway, titled "Calle de Cuchilleros"; 2) View of the exterior of a church/mission, titled "San Antonio de la Florida"; 3) Scene of a bear shaking a tree, entitled "Madrid". Maker's stamp on back of leaf at guard: "Casa de Diego" Created between 1950 and 1986.

Description: Folding fan. Thin polished wood or bamboo guards lacquered a dark mahogany. The thin sticks are dyed purple. Paper leaf with hand-painted abstract design of flowers and foliage on a reddish ground. Metal bail. Reverse is unadorned. No visible labels or marks. Hat

Description: Hat created with a tan silk scarf printed with black "leopard print". The framework is a pillbox style low, cylindrical, slightly domed crown, over which the silk scarf is fastened, pulled to back forming knotted ornament with trailing end. Lined in white silk, with inner black grosgrain ribbon hatband, with translucent brown plastic comb at inside front to secure to wearer's head. Mules

Description: Mules of red leather. The backless shoes are designed with pointed toe, squared at tip, and with rounded vamp. At top of vamp on each shoe is a large flattened sphere of same leather. Platform/sole of white leather. The low, set-in heels taper to base, and are covered in same red leather. Stamped on insole: "Hand made in Spain / Simorettes / World famous kid" Stamped on sole: "8 1/2"; "N"

Description: A pyramid, a sphere and a square block rest on the rooftop of one of the buildings in the Olympic village. The view is a detail of the rooftop sculptures. The sphere appears to balance just on the edge of the roof.
