ROS Are Good

Description: This opinion article focuses on the possibility that ROS are beneficial to plants, supporting cellular proliferation, physiological function, and viability, and that maintaining a basal level of ROS in cells is essential for life.

Sturm bounds for Siegel modular forms

Description: This article establishes Sturm bounds for degree g Siegel modular forms modulo a prime p, which are vital for explicit computations. This includes an inductive proof that exploits Fourier-Jacobi expansions of Siegel modular forms and properties of specializations of Jacobi forms to torsion points.

Stochastics and thermodynamics for equilibrium measures of holomorphic endomorphisms on complex projective spaces

Description: This article proves that the dynamical system (f,μφ) enjoys exponential decay of correlations of Hölder continuous observables as well as the Central Limit Theorem and the Law of Iterated Logarithm for the class of these variables that, in addition, satisfy a natural co-boundary condition. This article also shows that the topological pressure function t ↦ P(tφ) is real-analytic throughout the open set of all parameters t for which the potentials tφ have pressure gaps.

More comprehensive forensic genetic marker analyses for accurate human remains identification using massively parallel DNA sequencing

Description: This paper uses massively parallel sequencing (MPS) to characterize 140-year-old human skeletal remains discovered at a historical site in Deadwood, South Dakota, United States.

Borrelia, Ehrlichia, and Rickettsia spp. in Ticks Removed from Persons, Texas, USA

Description: This article analyzes the frequency and identity of pathogens and bacterial agents in ticks removed from humans and subsequently submitted to the Texas Department of State Health Services, Zoonosis Control Program, from October 1, 2004, through September 30, 2008.

A Three-Dimensional Functional Assessment of Heart and Vessel Development int he Larva of the Zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Description: This article describes the use of a three-dimensional integration of the early zebrafish heart and vessels to greatly reduce measurement error of stroke volume and cardiac output and to determine the cross-sectional growth of major vessels in the developing zebrafish larvae.

The deepest X-ray view of high-redshift galaxies: constraints on low-rate black hole accretion

Description: This article exploits the 7 Ms Chandra observations in the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S), the deepest X-ray survey to date, coupled with CANDELS/GOODS-S data, to measure the total X-ray emission arising from 2076 galaxies at 3.5 ≤ z ≤ 6.5.

Phylogenetic analysis of eukaryotic NEET proteins uncovers a link between a key gene duplication event and the evolution of vertebrates

Description: This article describes the use of three members of the human NEET protein family (CISD1, mitoNEET; CISD2, NAF-1 or Miner 1; and CISD3, Miner2) as guides to conduct a phylogenetic analysis of eukaryotic NEET proteins and their evolution.

Effects of light on the resistivity of chemical vapor deposited graphene films

Description: This article reports that the resistance of a chemical vapor deposition (CVD) grown graphene film transferred onto an SiO₂ substrate increases to higher saturation values upon exposure to light of decreasing wavelength from the visible to ultraviolet.

A Dual-Modality System for Both Multi-Color Ultrasound-Switchable Fluorescence and Ultrasound Imaging

Description: This article discusses the development of a dual-modality imaging system by combining recently developed ultrasound-switchable fluorescence (USF) imaging technology with the conventional ultrasound (US) B-mode imaging.

Reactive oxygen species, abiotic stress and stress combination

Description: This article reviews recent studies on the role of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in abiotic stress in plants, and propose that different abiotic stresses, such as drought, heat, salinity and high light, result in different ROS signatures that determine the specificity of the acclimation response and help tailor it to the exact stress the plant encounters.

Reduced Heart Rate and Cardiac Output Differentially Affect Angiogenesis, Growth, and Development in Early Chicken Embryos (Gallus domesticus)

Description: This article demonstrates for the first time that different processes in the ontogeny of the early vertebrate embryo (i.e., hypertrophic growth vs. development) have differential sensitivities to altered convective blood flow.
