Quantitative Aspects of the Microflora of an Overland Flow Spray Irrigation Sewage Disposal System

Description: It was the purpose of this investigation to attempt to quantitate the microflora of the fields which receive the effluent from the Campbell Soup Plant, Paris, Texas, and to determine whether or not there is a correlation between the numbers and types of organisms present and the efficiency of purification of the system.

Rectal Temperatures of the Cotton Rat, Sigmodon Hispidus (Rodentia : Cricetidae)

Description: This investigation has been concerned with determining the extent to which a small mammal, the cotton rat, may become acclimated to environmental temperatures, and the influence acclimation has upon a population. The study was also designed to determine if acclimation effects on a population can be seen in individual rats.

Remote Sensing of Landscape-Level Ecological Attributes at Ray Roberts Lake in North Texas

Description: Biological diversity is a key component in assessing ecosystem health. Alteration, degradation and loss of habitat due to human influence is currently the primary stressor resulting in decreases in diversity. Reliable assessment of large areas in terms of biological integrity are needed for conservation and preservation efforts. Remotely sensed data provide an integrated view of reflected electromagnetic energy over large areas of the earth. These energy patterns provide unique spectral signatuā€¦ more

The Response of Aquatic Insect Communities and Caged In situ Asiatic Clams (Corbicula fluminea) to Dechlorinated Municipal Effluent in the Trinity River in North Texas

Description: Dischargers to the Trinity River in North Texas were required to dechlorinate their effluents in 1990-91. Field surveys were conducted above and below an outfall to determine the response of resident immature insects and caged in situ juvenile Asiatic clams to chlorinated and dechlorinated effluent. Within six months after dechlorination began, insect community composition and C. fluminea survival significantly improved at stations below the outfall. Significantly lower clam growth within one mā€¦ more

Responses of Selected Texas Fishes to Abiotic Factors, and an Evaluation of the Mechanisms Controlling Thermal Tolerance of the Sheepshead Minnow

Description: Low oxygen tolerances of ten fishes were estimated using an original nitrogen cascade design, and reciprocally transformed to express responses as ventilated volume necessary to satisfy minimal oxygen demand (LĀ·mg O2^-1). Values ranged from 0.52 to 5.64 LĀ·mg^-1 and were partitioned into three statistically distinct groups. Eight stream fishes showed moderately high tolerances reflecting metabolic adaptations associated with stream intermittency. Juvenile longear sunfish and two mollies compriseā€¦ more

Sanitary Aspects of the Swimming Pool of North Texas State Teachers College, Denton, Texas

Description: This investigation was conducted in order to show that insanitary conditions may exist in the swimming pool at North Texas State Teachers College provided the proper precautions are not taken; and, in contrast that this pool can be sanitary and entirely safe when operated and used according to the necessary sanitary specifications.

Seasonal and Spatial Variability of the Microcrustacean Community in Lake Texoma, Texas and Oklahoma

Description: Twenty-eight species of zooplankton were identified from Lake Texoma. Seasonal density of the overall microcrustacean community and seasonal cycles of individual species were compared with northern populations and any available literature from the Southwest. Cycles of occurrence and abundance were similar to those observed in northern populations but tended to occur earlier in the year due to higher temperatures. Spatial distributions within the reservoir were heavily influenced by nutrient andā€¦ more

Seasonal Survey of Actinomycetes in Twenty Denton County, Texas, Soils

Description: This investigation has had for its aim a further study of actinomycete flora of twenty Denton County, Texas, soils. The problem has evolved itself into, first, a seasonal analysis for the number of actinomycetes in each of the twenty soils; second, a determination of the types of soils that contain the greatest number of actinomycetes in each cultivated and uncultivated land; third, a determination of soil moisture and pH; and fourth, an attempt to correlate these factors with the number of acā€¦ more

Seasonal Variations in Microflora of Four Denton County, Texas, Clay Soils

Description: This investigation has for its aim the confirmation of the correlation between soil moisture and the microflora of soils, and a lesser relation between the soil temperature and the microflora. The soils used in this study are typical clay soils of Denton County, Texas. The samples were taken from virgin pasture lands and analyses made monthly or semimonthly. The wide seasonal variation of temperature and rainfall afford a good opportunity for this study.

A Solution for High Bacterial Counts in a Local Dairy, Denton, Texas

Description: It is the aim of this investigation to determine through routine checks if the bacterial count in the milk from Brooks Dairy Company is high and if so to determine the source. If it is found that the laboratory plate counts are unnecessarily high, it is the further purpose of this paper to make recommendations for improvements in the quality of milk produced by this dairy plant.

Spatial and Temporal Influences of Water Quality on Zooplankton in Lake Texoma

Description: Seventy-one aquatic species including the copepodids and nauplii were identified from Lake Texoma from August 1996 to September 1997. Zooplankton community structure, abundance and spatial and temporal distributions were compared among five lake zones delineated a priori based on chloride concentration. The zones, in order of decreasing chloride concentration, are the Red River zone (RRZ), Red river Transition zone (RRTZ), Main Lake zone (MLZ), Washita River Transition zone (WRTZ) and Washita ā€¦ more

Spring Food Habits of Corydalus Cornutus L. in the Brazos River, Texas

Description: The objective of this study was to determine the kinds and numbers of food organisms consumed by Corydalus cornutus, and to investigate its periodicity of feeding during the spring months in the Brazos River, Palo Pinto County, Texas. A total of 468 larvae were collected at two-week intervals from February 29 to May 14, 1971. Larvae were taken at opportunity during three periods of the day, 6am.-12pm., 12pm.-6pm., and 6pm.-12am. A total of 23 different food items was observed in the 121 stomachā€¦ more

The Stoneflies (Plecoptera) of the Ozark and Ouachita Mountains

Description: Collections of stoneflies (Plecoptera) were made at 603 stream sites from Nov. 1983 - May 1988 in the Ozark-Ouachita Mountain region, in relation to physiographic and vegetational characteristics. Examination of approximately 9000 vials from these collections, supplemented with material from major museums and other collectors, revealed 88 stonefly species in 8 families and 24 genera. Storm Water Retention Ponds: An Important Source of Aquatic Macroinvertebrate Diversity in a Semi-Arid Urban Landscape of Denton, Texas

Description: The City of Denton, located in a semi-arid region of Texas, has over 200 manmade ponds within its city limits. Many of these ponds, located in densely populated areas, are engineered to control storm water runoff. There is a general lack of recognition of the value these waters contribute to regional biodiversity and as greenspaces. This study, conducted in Denton, is monitoring habitat variables and macroinvertebrate diversity in a series of ponds selected to represent a gradient of urban inā€¦ more
