The Davis-Johnston Controversy

Description: Looming large in the manifold problems of the Davis government after the clash of arms at Sumter was the creation of an army to defend the South. Involved in this problem was the extremely important task of expanding forces. No dearth of excellent officer material existed for some of the most able West Point graduates in the Union army had resigned and were eager to serve their section. The major problem was the question of relative rank to be assigned in the new chain of command.

The Adsorption of Radioactive Isotopes on Precipitates

Description: This thesis concerns the investigation of radioisotopes as indicators for precipitation reactions. As a precipitate forms in the presence of a radioisotope, adsorption may take place on its surface. If this adsorption changes markedly at the stoichiometric point it will be possible to use this variation as an indicator for the reaction.

Hydantoins as Anticonvulsants. VI. 5-Substituted-Alkoxy Derivatives of 5-Phenylhydantoin

Description: No derivatives of 5-phenylhydantoin with an oxygen atom attached directly in the five position of the hydantoin nucleus have been found in the literature. It was therefore considered of interest to synthesize a series of compounds of this type to determine the effect of the change of the position of the oxygen atom on anticonvulsant activity.

Neutron Density Depression Due to an Oblate Spheroidal Detector

Description: In this paper, two projects have been undertaken. First, Workman's calculations have been checked to a higher degree of approximation to determine the accuracy of his method. Second, a new set of boundary conditions has been developed for obtaining solutions of the neutron diffusion equation which do not depend on the solution of the equation inside the detector.
