Characteristics of Groups Taught Under Two Social Climates

Description: The problem of this study is to determine the effects of two different social climates, as created by different teaching methods, upon the characteristics of college class groups. The social climates utilized in the present investigation were: (a) a democratic social climate, and (b) an autocratic social climate. The actual meaning of the adjectives used to label these social climates is necessarily somewhat different from the meanings attributed to them in political or economic discussions.

A Conceptual Validation Study of the Rorschach Indicators of Creativity

Description: The major theoretical position of this study was that the cognitive functioning of the creative individual, as compared with the non-creative normal, is characterized by the greater availability of mature operations as these operations are defined by the Rorschach. It was assumed that the "creative individual" is free to use his imaginal processes to enrich his perception of the world. This study recognized that the perception of good Gestalten of the world is a function of the perceiver, his needs, defense mechanisms, integration, and the characteristics of the stimulus-field. When the stimulus is ambiguous, as it is in the Rorschach, the perceiver has to draw on his own resources more heavily than if the stimulus was structured.

An Analytical Study of the Recreation Program of the Dallas County Juvenile Home Dallas, Texas

Description: "It has been the purpose of this study to make an analysis of the recreational program at the Dallas County Juvenile Home...certain conclusions concerning the recreational program have been reached. 1. The principles upon which the recreational program is based are in line with the recommendations of the National Recreation Association. 2. In practice, recreation in the Dallas County Juvenile Home has not reached maximum efficiency. 3. The program is built largely to fill the needs of the majority of the boys who are detained at the home. 4. The program has been modified in some cases to meet the needs of the individual groups. 5. The recreation program serves as a means for the boys to express themselves; therefore, the supervisors and the case workers are able to establish better rapport with each boy. 5. The better rapport with each boy enables the case worker to determine the proper placement of the boy. 7. Through the efforts of recreation many personality adjustments have been made. 8. The study shows that the majority or 51 percent of the boys chose yard play as a first choice of activities offered at the home. 9. Because of the maintained interest of the entire staff to find and improve the defects of the program, recreation facilities have been expanded. 10. Inadequate funds limit the full use of the facilities at the home. "--leaf 67.

An Evaluation of the Influence of Parent Interest on Child Achievement

Description: A number of investigations of pupil progress in school have definitely shown that the percentage of failure in the first grade is much higher than in the other grades. In the light of these investigations, it is safe to assume that there must be a number of contributing factors to this failure in grade progress. The nature of these factors and what the school can do, if anything, to mitigate their influence on pupil progress in the first grade constitute a challenge to educational research. The present study undertakes an investigation along these lines. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to investigate the need for a pre-school program; (2) to study the reported values of such a program; and (3) to survey a certain number of schools to determine the extent and nature of preschool programs if any.

The basis upon which aid is granted, the amount of grants available, and a study of legislation governing the state program of aid to dependent children will be given prominence in this investigation. Description: As a contribution to the general problem of Negro education, this study has undertaken to compare the holding power of the Negro schools and the White schools in Fort Worth, Texas, to determine whether or not there is a significant difference. It is also the purpose of the study to discover and analyze the reasons for the withdrawal and non-attendance of Negro students. A further purpose is to determine whether or not any significant difference has been achieved in the holding power of the Negro schools in the last three years by practices fostered by the Gilmer-Aiken school laws or by recent efforts made to equalize the educational opportunity afforded Negro scholastics with the educational opportunity afforded White scholastics in Fort Worth.

A Proposed Guidance Program for Electra High School

Description: The problem of this study is to develop a functional plan for organizing, initiating, and administering a sound guidance program in the Electra, Texas, High School. Major emphasis has been placed upon a multidimensional guidance service in order that the optimum measure of guidance can be provided for all pupils in accordance with their needs. In order to plan a guidance program adapted to the needs of the particularly designated group of boys and girls, it was deemed necessary to discover their needs as much as possible, in a short period of time, by testing student opinion and knowledge. Another specific problem of the study is to survey the opinions of authorities in the field of guidance and personnel so as to determine what they think constitutes a sound guidance program in a secondary school. Thus, the problem of the writer resolves itself into a threefold undertaking, as follows: 1. To determine the guidance needs of the pupils of Electra High School. 2. To establish a set of criteria of soundness for a guidance program in a secondary school. The criteria are to be based upon the opinions of several authorities in the field of guidance. 3. The study at hand is concerned specifically with the problem in the College of Home Economics. Through a study of the data known about students at the time of entrance into the College, it was thought that a better basis for selection night be recommended for the admission of students to the College. Such questions as the following arise in the mind of the research worker: 1. Do the group psychological tests given at the University at the time of entrance give us one basis by which we may predict probable academic success or failure? 2. Are the known high school quartiles dependable bases for selection of successful students? 3. Are there factors in the family backgrounds of these students that.may be significant in their selection? 4. Does an objective personality test have validity as a predictive factor in the success of a student? 5. Do we have any anecdotal records that reveal significant differences in personal adjustment between successful and failed students? 6. Are we able to predict the probable success of failed students upon readmission? 7. Do we have any combination of factors that may be significant in predicting the probable success of a student?

Description: Since every school in Comanche County operates some form of pupil transportation, the purpose of this study is to determine the efficiency of the system of pupil transportation in Comanche County and to find the means of operating school transportation more efficiently. School consolidation in Comanche County has made pupil transportation one of the most important problems that administrators of the county have to deal with. The tendency is toward larger school attendance areas. As the attendance area gets larger, more pupils will be transported. Increased demands are mounting; replacement of worn-out vehicles and equipment is imperative; a more efficient coverage of the attendance area seems necessary; and finance is lacking.
