How the Social Needs of the Fourth and Fifth Grade Boys in the Public Schools of Denton, Texas, Are Being Met Through Their Hobbies

Description: "The problem of this study is to determine whether the hobbies of the fourth and fifth grade boys of the public schools in Denton, Texas, are contributing to their social needs. It is believed that the intangible attributes of living, which can be mearsured neither by rule nor square, make for the well-rounded, happy, social, individual, whether he be adult or child. The degree to which an individual is adjusted socially ranges from the completely anti-social type to the fully-integrated type. The reasons for this gradation are numerous. They include the influence of the home, the school, and the playmates, as well as other factors in the general environment of the child. The purpose of this investigation is to discover whether the hobbies of the boys under consideration are potential and actual forces for integration and socialization."--leaf 1.

Planning a Sound High School Testing Program

Description: A major consideration in this study has been given to the establishment of the criteria by which the soundness of a testing program could be evaluated as its role in the secondary school. This problem was limited to the planning and administering of a progressive and comprehensive long-range testing program designed to meet the needs and problems common to most school administrators within the economic limits of a small high school. It was not the purpose of this study to anticipate the problems peculiar to particular teachers, high schools, or localities. However, the testing program if properly directed will result in the formation of subsidiary testing programs undertaken by particular teachers or groups of teachers for the purpose of throwing light on the specific problems raised by a large general testing program.

Plastics, Their History and Use

Description: Since the civilization, population and living standards of the peoples of the world have increased in such gigantic proportions, especially in the last fifty years; and since the supply of natural resources cannot meet the demand, we have of necessity had to find new materials to take their place. These new materials must fulfill two purposes; namely, to take the place of the natural resources so wantonly destroyed and to meet requirements that the natural materials are not able to meet. Foremost among these new materials are the synthetic resinous materials known as plastics. Plastics are one way of getting around the fact that Nature has not thought of everything. The ability of man to imagine things that he does not see and to fashion these things from what he finds around him is responsible for what we call progress -- and for plastics.

An Evaluation of the Influence of Parent Interest on Child Achievement

Description: A number of investigations of pupil progress in school have definitely shown that the percentage of failure in the first grade is much higher than in the other grades. In the light of these investigations, it is safe to assume that there must be a number of contributing factors to this failure in grade progress. The nature of these factors and what the school can do, if anything, to mitigate their influence on pupil progress in the first grade constitute a challenge to educational research. The present study undertakes an investigation along these lines. The purpose of this study is threefold: (1) to investigate the need for a pre-school program; (2) to study the reported values of such a program; and (3) to survey a certain number of schools to determine the extent and nature of preschool programs if any.

Description: "In order to determine the extent to which the Denton County Free Library is meeting the needs of the elementary school children for recreational reading, an analysis was made of the reading interests of the elementary-school children of twelve common school districts of Denton County, Texas. The ages of these children ranged from nine to fourteen years. A second analysis was made by checking various acceptable authors in the field of children's reading interests as read by the children in this group and age level. This information was secured by having each child in the schools check the items listed in a school survey sheet. This information was tabulated and the results are shown in tables presented in Chapter III. A third analysis was made of library material found in the reading lists that were supplied by the county; and lastly, a comparison was made of the results of the last analysis with the two preceding ones." -- leaf 3
