Connections
In my problem-in-lieu-of-thesis, I investigated the connections formed between images which refer to disorder and those which connote imposed order; therefore, I pursued the following questions: 1. What connotations did each of the images have for me? 2. How was each image affected by taking it out of one context and placing it in a new one? 3. What relationships formed between images thus juxtaposed?
Encounters: Traditional Oriental Theme Paintings with Western Influences
My proposal involved gathering and analyzing both visual and written information. The following steps were specifically considered: 1. Exhibition catalogues and related information on Robert Rauschenberg and Zao Wou-Ki were reviewed. Those artists deal with cross-cultural ideas in their work. 2. A sketchbook and an artistic journal were kept, as well as a record of my creative processes. 3. A body of work was done in a consistent matter. I employed a spontaneous/intuitive strategy in my creative activity. I kept myself flexible in order to approach the idea in a loose manner by simultaneously making several paintings with the same content.
An Investigation of the Relationship Between Form and Function in Ceramic Dinnerware
The problem I proposed to explore involved the evaluative process of finished dinnerware. For the problem I made three sets of dinnerware in three different patterns. Based on this work I asked the following three questions. 1. How do the different forms within each series visually relate to one another? 2. What qualities make this work visually successful? 3. What qualities enable these pieces to function well?
An Investigation Into the Use of the Computer as a Design Tool in the Creation of Modular Sculpture
The idea of using the computer as a design tool seemed ideal for my sculpture. The simplicity of my sculptures and their repeating elements are easily rendered by computer technology. The computer allowed me to perceive my designs accurately from different perspectives. My hand-rendered designs, by contrast, were difficult to read, especially from multiple views. The computer sharpened my designs, while showing me the different views in less time. Although the designs were computer assisted, I commanded all of the manipulations. This procedure is different from computer-generated design, in which the computer is programmed to do the designing itself. My investigation of the computer as a design tool answered several questions.
Music for String Orchestra
Music for String Orchestra is a work of approximately sixteen minutes duration for chamber orchestra. The work is scored for eight first violins, six second violins, four violas, four to six cellos and two to four double basses. The work is in three movements. Movement I is in a large three-part form, movement II a simple three-part form and the last movement is in a large three-part form. The first and last movements are unified by several aspects, while the second movement employs material that is independent of the first and last movements. The main difference between the three movements is that the first and last movements are based on a western music idiom and the second movement is rooted in a Korean music idiom.

Response of Female Athletes to Twelve-Week Plyometric Depth-jump Training
This study aimed to investigate the response of trained intercollegiate and national level female athletes to twelve week depth-jump (DJ) training performed twice weekly with forty repetitions of DJs performed each training session. Results of statistical analysis revealed that only the .3 and .5 meter experimental group improved significantly on VJ ability. However, there was no significant increase in LS for either experimental group compared to the control group. It was concluded that DJ training from .3 and .5 meter heights is more optimal for increasing VJ ability of trained female athletes compared to the 0.75 and 1.1 meter heights as recommended by Verhoshanski for trained male athletes. It was also concluded that DJ training has the the ultimate purpose of developing explosive leg power not leg strength.
Studies of the Membrane and DNA Gyrase Inhibiting Antibiotics on Pigment Synthesis in Corynebacterium Poinsettiae

Rationale and Considerations for Proposed Near-Death Research in the Hospital Setting
Abstract: Further research into the question of veridical perception during the "naturalistic" near-death out-of-body experience (nND OBE), that phase of the near-death experience in which the experiencer seems to be perceiving a normal earthly realm, would be of value to NDErs, their caregivers, and humanity in general. I propose a research procedure that targets visual perception during nND OBEs that occur in the hospital setting. I discuss unresolved issues in the design and implementation of such a procedure, and identify further areas of research.

A Comparison of UFO and Near-Death Experiences as Vehicles for the Evolution of Human Consciousness
Abstract: This study compares unidentified flying object experiencers (UFOErs) with near-death experiencers (NDErs) in regard to changes in attitudes toward self, others, and life in general, toward religious or spiritual orientation, and toward psychic abilities and beliefs. Kenneth Ring's questionnaires administered to NDErs (1984) were given in this study to 93 persons whose UFOE included either a light experience, and object experience, or a "close encounter." The author concludes that the UFOE, like the NDE, provides impetus toward spiritual growth, but neither as consistently nor as strongly.

Ego, Moral, and Faith Development in Near-Death Experiencers: Three Case Studies
Study examining relationships between three near-death experiencers' (NDErs) levels of moral, ego, and faith development, as measured by standardized instruments, and extensive qualitative data describing their NDEs and personal attributes. The results suggest that currently available instruments, designed to measure the lower self, may not reflect the awakening to a transpersonal plane of functioning that follows an NDE.
Thanatoperience
Abstract: Near-death experiences (NDEs) can be seen as special cases of psychological transition. They often involve a deep transformation in the sense of self. I examine the NDE as such, according to my phase theory of transition, and I analyze an NDE with the help of that theory. I conclude that the study of NDEs may provide insight into the general psychology of transition.
Electrophysiological and Morphological Analyses of Mouse Spinal Cord Mini-Cultures Grown on Multimicroelectrode Plates
The electrophysiological and morphological properties of small networks of mammalian neurons were investigated with mouse spinal cord monolayer cultures of 2 mm diameter grown on multimicroelectrode plates (MMEPs). Such cultures were viewed microscopically and their activity simultaneously recorded from 2 of any 36 fixed recording sites. The specific aims achieved were: development of techniques for production of functional MMEPs and maintenance of mini-cultures, characterization of the spontaneous activity of mini-cultures, application of inhibitory and disinhibitory agents, development of staining methods for cultured neurons and initial light microscopic analysis with correlation of electrophysiological and morphological characteristics.
Purification and Characterization of a Differentiation Factor From Rat Lung Conditioned Medium
A Differentiation Factor (DF) was purified from rat lung conditioned medium by a four-steps procedure. The DF has a molecular weight of 27000, and an isoelectric point of 4.70. Although DF is stable up to 60°C, it is sensitive to digestion by trypsin, chymotrypsin and subtilisin. DF forms granulocyte colonies in soft agar. Studies using anti-NRK CSF antibody demonstrated that DF is distinct from GM-CSF.
Aspects of Fathead Minnow Reproductive Behavior
Following a study of normal reproductive behavior of fathead minnows, Pimephales promelas, experiments were conducted to determine the stability/variability of behavior by sexually mature, territorial males under a variety of manipulated conditions. Collectively, these experiments indicate that although the individual behaviors of fathead minnows appear to be quite variable, the overall process, reproductive behavior, is stable.
Investigation Into the Causes for the Loss of Resolution in an Ion Chromatograpy Resin
Four mechanisms were considered as possible causes of the loss in resolution for a Dionex CG2 ion chromatography resin: 1) presence of inorganic ions strongly bound to the active sites; 2) adsorption of organic species; 3) physical alterations; and 4) chemical alterations. The instrumental analyses used to gather data were ICP, FT-IR, SEM, solid C-13 NMR and IC. Based on the results, no metal ions are bound to the resin, no organic species are held onto the resin, and no physical change was observable. The cause for the loss of resolution is a strong reduction in the number of active sites in the resin as confirmed by elemental analysis for the sulfur in the sulfonic acid present in the active sites.
Production, Location, and Binding of Violacein in Janthinobacterium
Violacein is a purple pigment typically produced by species of Chromobacterium and Janthinobacterium. A soil isolate, identified as Janthinobacterium, was studied. Maximal pigmentation occurred at 250C under aerobic conditions in the Keeble and Cross medium. Intracellular pigment was shown to be located in the cell membrane. Comparision of pigment production and growth curves indicated that violacein is synthesized in the cell and released into the environment possibly as a result of cell lysis. Extracellular pigment is water soluble, makes up 60% of the total pigment and shows a blue shift when compared to solvent extracted pigment. Results from purification indicated that the pigment is non-covalently bound to a small protein and aggregated into a larger molecule.
Studies on Poly(ADP-ribose) Metabolism and Chromatin Structure
In these studies, a procedure which allowed the in vivo labeling and detection of poly(ADP-ribose) was combined with nuclear fractionation techniques to analyze the nuclear distribution of ADP-ribose polymers. The results from these studies suggest the occurrence of poly(ADP-ribose) metabolism in two compartments of chromatin; one that is nuclear matrix-associated and one that is not. The biological significance of this compartmentalization is conceptualization in a model. This model postulates that, under some physiological conditions, poly(ADP-ribose) metabolism accomplishes the reversible targeting of specific regions of chromatin to the nuclear matrix domain by modulating DNA-protein and or protein-protein interactions.
