A Comparative Study of Achievements of Anglo- and Latin-American High School Pupils
"The purpose of this study is to investigate paired groups of Latin-American and Anglo-American children in one community who have attended the public schools approximately the same number of years, to discover difference, if any, in achievement when comparable opportunities for education have been present. Achievement, in this instance, means all phases of the school program: core subject areas, vocational subjects, physical education and health, and participation in extra-curricular activities. Two source of data are utilized in this study: (1) background information concerning the status and accomplishments of the Latin-american child in Texas schools, taken from professional literature in the field and related studies; (2) primary data, consisting of test results and case studies of two selected groups of pupils in the Stuart High School in south Texas, taken from the school records and teacher-observations studies of the Stuart High School ."-- leaf 3.
Comparison of Cost of Transporting Pupils for the School Years 1948-49 and 1949-50 in Cameron County, Texas.
The purpose of this study is to make a comparison of the unit cost of transportation per pupil in Cameron County, Texas, for the years of 1948-49 and 1949-50 to determine if the transportation provided by the Foundation Act was more economical than the transportation cost under the previous methods of providing for this in Texas schools.
The Economic Development of the Rio Grande Plain
The study of the economic development of the Rio Grande Plain has been divided into the following seven chapters: (1) Physical Aspects of the Rio Grande Plain, (2) Grazing, (3) Development of Farming, (4) Development of Transportation, (5) Growth of Major Urban Centers, (6) Development of Natural Resources, and (7) Present Trends. In each chapter except Chapters I and VII, effort has been made to locate the origin of that particular industry and trace its development. In order to understand the development in the raising of livestock, farming, transportation, natural resources, and the growth of major cities of the region, it would be well to understand the physical aspects of the region.
An Evaluation of the Los Fresnos Elementary School, Los Fresnos, Texas
The purpose of this study is to present the appraisal of the Los Fresnos Elementary School in terms of the criteria in the Handbook for Self-Appraisal and Improvement of Elementary Schools as made by a committee of twelve teachers of that school. Attention is given to the seven major areas of the school and to certain subtopics under each heading.
An Experimental Study to Ascertain the Amount of Achievement Made in Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary, and Social Studies by the Use of Audio-Visual Aids
The present study is an attempt to obtain, from two groups of students, useful facts with which to evaluate the most effective method of presenting educational materials to junior-high-school students. The study is an attempt to measure and evaluate the achievement made in social studies, reading comprehension, and vocabulary in 1949 and 1950. The following questions form the basis for the present study: What method is best for the purpose of presenting materials to a class? Which method helps to solve the problem of the student most effectively? By which method is greater achievement made? If the two methods prove of equal value, then how much achievement may be attributed to the use of each method?

Operationalizing a Reading Culture at Rio Hondo Junior High
A rural Rio Grande Valley school has continuously performed below the state average on the reading portion of the State Assessment of Academic Readiness. One of the concerns expressed amongst teachers and staff is the student’s lack of desire to read for pleasure or for academic purposes. This study examines the attitudes of students and staff in towards reading by focusing on the school’s reading culture. A mixed methods approach consisting of interviews, participant observation, a focus group, and a survey was employed in this study. The study found that the teachers and students maintained two polarizing perceptions of their reading culture. Based on these findings the following recommendations were made: create a literature-centered curriculum, increase and vary the selection of school library books, and align teachers’ perception with the students’ perception to create a unified reading culture.

The purpose of the study was to determine what methods and techniques seem to be the best in helping the beginning Latin-American child to understand the written and oral English as taught by our schools today and to what extent these methods and techniques meed democratic and psychological criteria governing such a program.

The Use of Music Activities with Retarded Latin-American Children
The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the use of certain music activities in meeting some of the needs peculiar to a group of older, retarded Latin-American children. It is an effort to determine whether certain music activities may or may not help to give Latin-American children a more satisfying school experience and better equip them to live in the Anglo-American society of which they have become a part.
