Adolescents' Attitudes Toward Mate Selection

Description: This study investigated the attitudes of sixty-four adolescents who completed an instrument designed to measure attitudes toward factors which influence mate selection. The hypotheses examined attitudes toward mate selection and gender, socioeconomic status, educational goals, family structure, and preferred age at marriage. The data were analyzed by calculating percentages and mean scores. The analysis of data revealed that adolescents valued personality-oriented characteristics as the most important characteristics desired in a mate; males and females held different values for certain factors; adolescents from various socioeconomic levels held different values for certain factors; adolescents with different educational goals, and adolescents residing in various family structures held similar values for each factor; and adolescents with various preferences for age at marriage held different values for certain factors.

An Analysis of the Effect of the Match Between Applicants and Openings on Selected Unemployment Rates

Description: The purpose of this study was to classify unemployment by clearly defined, objectively measured categories which produced a consistent, empirical model identifying the structure of unemployment in Texas during the period 1973 to 1978. The models employed univariate hierarchical regression of Texas montly unemployment rates and changes in unemployment rates on measures of seasonality, cyclical fluctuations, the match of qualified applicants to available openings, and the interaction of these terms. The results of these models were reported.

The Analysis of the Effects on Student Cognition of the Filmstrip Series, Introduction to Economics, Unit I, Microeconomics, When Used as a Supplement in a Principles of Microeconomics Class

Description: Two teachers with two classes each participated in the research, which used a modified Campbell and Stanley equivalent time series design. Each class was randomly assigned four of eight filmstrips. Both experimental and control classes heard lectures on a module, the experimental group viewed the filmstrip, and both were posttested. Independent variables controlling for student differences, module difficulty, student attitudes, and the critical independent variable, viewing of the filmstrip (View), were regressed on student cognition. In the analysis, significant at the .001 level, View exerted a significant positive influence on cognition scores. No relation was discovered between student attitudes toward filmstrips and increased cognition.

Analysis of the Housing Status of the Elderly

Description: Quality of housing was examined in relation to living arrangement, race, socioeconomic status, age, gender, income, health, and renter-owner status. There appeared to be differences in housing quality for those of younger ages, females, and owners. White subjects occupied good quality housing while Blacks occupied fair quality housing. Proportion of income allocated to housing was examined by renter-owner status, race, gender and living arrangement. Renters allocated an average of 34 per cent compared to 17 per cent for owners. Females living alone occupied good quality housing, committed the highest proportion of income to housing, and one-third had incomes below the poverty threshold while two-thirds were near poverty. Subjects allocated more for utilities than others over sixty-five, nationally.

The Anthem in America: 1900-1950

Description: During the first half of this century, a wealth of anthem literature was published and performed in the United States that, as a result of the deluge of new publications since those years, has been either forgotten or is unknown to modern church musicians. The purpose of this study is to make the best of this music known, for much of it is still both suitable and desirable for contemporary worship. The research is grouped into six chapters that are entitled: The Quartet Anthem, "Anthems in the Anglican Tradition," "Prominent Choral Ensembles and the Dissemination of the Anthem," "Anthems by Prominent Music Educators," "Anthems in the Russian Style," and "The Negro Spiritual."

Anthropology as Administrative Tool: the Use of Applied Anthropology by the War Relocation Authority

Description: Beginning in the 1930's a debate emerged within the American Anthropological Association over applied versus pure research. With a few exceptions the members refused to endorse or support the attempt to introduce applied anthropology as a discipline recognized by the Association. This refusal resulted in the creation of a separate organization, the Society for Applied Anthropology, in 1941. In order to prove the validity of their discipline the members of the Society needed an opportunity. That opportunity appeared with the signing of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the forced removal of Japanese-Americans from the west coast. Members of the Society believed the employment of applied anthropologists by the War Relocation Authority would demonstrate the value of their discipline. When provided with this opportunity, however, applied anthropology failed.

Assessment Center Ratings as a Function of Personality Factors, Sex and Rating System

Description: The purpose of this study was to examine the differences between the traditional global rating scale and a new behavioral rating scale in a university-based assessment center. It was hypothesized that personality factors, as measured by the 16PF and associated with the global ratings of performance would differ from those associated with the behavioral ratings of performance. It was further hypothesized that the associated personality factors would also differ for males and females. These hypotheses were ^confirmed. Pearson correlations were computed for ratings of males, females, and all subjects combined on both global and behavioral rating scales.

Assessment of Posttreatment Follow-Up Evaluation Procedures with Alcohol-Abuse Patients: A Methodological Study

Description: The purpose of this project was to clarify the methodological considerations involved in the posttreatment follow-up evaluation of alcohol-abuse patients. A two-part project was undertaken in an attempt to answer the follow-up questions of how and when to measure treatment effects with discharged alcoholics. In Part I, a large-scale survey was utilized to examine return rates across various program evaluation methods and time frames. In Part II, the predictive validity of scores received at short-term follow-up in relation to scores received at 1-year follow-up was assessed for measures of psychosocial functioning and alcohol consumption.

An Assessment of the Effect of News Announcements on Stock Prices of Oil and Gas Producing Companies

Description: This empirical study is concerned with the extent to which news announcements affect the performance of common equity securities of oil and gas producing companies. The market effects of news announcements are considered to be of importance in resolving two issues. One concerns financial statement disclosure and the second concerns examination of prior oil and gas industry-related accounting research. This dissertation assumes capital market efficiency and addresses two research questions: do news announcements concerning activities of nonintegrated oil and gas producing companies affect the companies' common stock prices, and are announcements concerning nonintegrated oil and gas companies' financial, personnel, explorational, and developmental and operational activities used equally by investors in their decision-making?

The Attitudes of Edward Bok and the Ladies' Home Journal Toward Woman's Role in Society, 1889-1919

Description: Edward William Bok, the Ladies' Home Journal's editor from 1889 to 1919, remained a confirmed proponent of Victorian womanhood. Yet, dramatic changes in American society made his perceptions increasingly anachronistic and, recognizing this, he reluctantly permitted his magazine's portrayal of woman to change with the times. The first part of the dissertation examines Edward Bok's Victorian attitudes toward woman's role in society. According to him, woman's intellectual, emotional, and physical inferiority and her moral and intuitional superiority harmonize perfectly to define a special sphere for her--the home—where she fulfills her roles as wife, mother, and homemaker. Outside the home, Bok permitted only a narrow range of activity for woman—church and club activities and even employment outside the home if finances required it. The second part of the dissertation illustrates how the Journal's image of woman changed during Bok's tenure, especially during the second decade of the twentieth century. At the outset, all departments of the Journal reinforced the editor's concept of woman, but by the time Edward Bok retired, in 1919. the magazine's image of woman contrasted sharply with Bo'k's personal views.

Biofeedback-Assisted Relaxation: Effects on Phagocytic Immune Functioning

Description: Life events and one's ability to adapt to these events has significant effects on immune functioning. Immunosuppression has been related to a high magnitude of life stress and low adaptive ability. While studies have explored immune response in stressed individuals, no study has approached the area of prevention with low-immunity individuals. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether subjects who self-report stressful lives have lower immunity, and whether "low" immunity subjects under "high" stress could enhance phagocytic activity through biofeedback-assisted relaxation.

Birth Order and Maladaptive Behavior in School-Aged Children

Description: This study investigated the relationship between maladaptive behavior, defined as referral to counseling, and the Adlerian construct of birth order. The birth order variables examined were ordinal position, sex of subject, family density, family size, socio-economic status, intactness of family, age of mother, and sex of sibling. The subjects in this study were 217 school-aged children with academic and/or behavior problems who were referred to an interdisciplinary guidance center. The subjects were assigned to counseling or no-counseling groups on the basis of an interdisciplinary evaluation and staffing, which included an extensive battery of academic and psychological tests.

The Book on Life Beyond by Bô Yin Râ: Death and Afterlife in Spiritual Perspective

Description: "This paper seeks to draw attention to a comprehensive work on death-related questions, first published in 1920, that sheds light on crucial problems still discussed today. The author speaks from his extensive observations of the dying process and near-death phenomena, seen from a spiritual point of view, but, more importantly, discusses the inherent structure of nonphysical existence, where life no longer is perceived by mortal senses but rather, as he states, by virtue of a spiritual organism and its faculties" (abstract).
