The Accuracy of Teacher Rating of Pupil Personality and Achievement as Compared with Standardized Test Scores: This study has the following purpose: (1) to find the relationship between teacher rating of pupil personality and standardized test results; (2) to find the relationship between teacher rating of pupil achievement and standardized test results; and (3) to determine where more emphasis should be placed in order to better evaluate the child and his work.

An Analysis of the Contribution of a Given Educational System to the Defense of Democracy: The purpose of this study is four-fold: (1) to present through an analysis of life needs the nature and source of a curriculum best adapted to democracy; (2) to present fairly some of the reasons why a curriculum must be founded on democracy if democracy survives the dangerous forces that threaten to obliterate its very existence; (3) to make an unprejudiced analysis of the regular situation now existing in Oklahoma schools at the present time to find whether her schools are meeting this challenge to democracy; and (4) to offer from the comparison of the summaries of these data recommendations whereby all schools may have a curriculum "rooted in the life of its people"--a program that contributes to democracy and permanent national defense.
An Analysis of the Course of Study for Instrumental Music Courses in the High Schools of Texas: The purpose of this survey was to analyze the course of study in instrumental music prescribed by the Texas State Department for the high schools of the state and to determine whether or not a coordinated and well-rounded program of education in instrumental music is being offered in the schools of Texas. It was hoped, furthermore, that, by comparing this program with others elsewhere, this analysis might show whether or not Texas is following any general trend in instrumental music education.

A Comparative Study of the Students' Recreational Program in the North Texas State Teachers College, Denton, Texas, and the Teachers' Recreational Program in Amarillo, Texas: This study is a comparative analysis of the recreational activities and facilities of 150 students attending the North Texas State Teachers College, Denton, Texas, during the summer of 1940 and of 150 teachers in service in the public schools of Amarillo, Texas during 1940-41. The three-fold purpose of this investigation was to compare the recreational activities in which teachers in service and students in college participated, to secure from each subject a ranking of activities as to his choice for participation, and to determine the adequacy of recreational facilities for both groups.

A Critical Analysis of Schubert's Song Cycle "The Maid of the Mill": The significance of a complete analysis of Schubert's orchestral larger works is self-evident to musicians and scholars. In the literature today one may find adequate analysis of many of the larger choral and orchestral works of the various masters, but rarely is it possible for one to secure a scholarly and intelligent analysis and interpretation of the smaller forms, especially the vocal works. Perhaps the reason for this state is the lack of interest in many of the aspects and phases of song literature as vocalists and teachers have probably been more concerned with the artistic rendition of the songs rather than an academic approach. But with the turn of the present decade, a decided interest has become apparent in musicological scholarship and the present study is but one evidence of the trend toward critical and academic analysis of smaller forms heretofore omitted in music literature.
A Critical Analysis of the Harmonic Idiom of Songs of Claude Debussy and its Influence on Compositions of Charles Loeffler and John Alden Carpenter: The main purpose of this study will be to analyze the impressionistic style and techniques of Debussy, how the idiom came to be, and the influence of this particular idiom on two American composers. For thorough understanding, the poetic and artistic backgrounds of impressionism must be brought out; the biography of the man who originated the idiom, as well as his aesthetic theories, must be briefly covered. More objectively, from biographies and various other studies the techniques peculiarly impressionistic will be listed, and analysis will be made of several of the Debussy songs from various periods of his composition.

It it designed to show how the modern composer has taken the tools of words and music and utilized them in creating a valid art-form. I believe it is the first study of its kind that has been made. The song literature which formed the basis of the study has been attested to as valid data by Otto Luening, prominent modern composer and pedagogue and twice winner of the Guggenheim Fellowship in composition, and John Kirk, distinguished pianist and lecturer on modern music.
A Descriptive Evaluation of the Reading Experiences of Certain Children: The purpose of this study is to discover through the use of the descriptive evaluation technique information about children's reading which may be of value as suggestions for classroom teachers who teach reading in the intermediate level. It is hoped that through the use of this technique the relation of the reading level of the individual children in a fourth and fifth grade group to the reading level of the material the children would read if left to their own choice in its selection may be determined.

Determination of the Optimum Concentration of Sulfur Dioxide to be Used in Sweet Potato Dehydration: The object of this paper is to determine the optimum concentration of sulfur dioxide to be used in the commercial dehydration of the sweet potato by this process. Attention has been given to two aspects of the problem, (1) the effect of sulfur dioxide upon the extraction of water from the sweet potato by mechanical means, and (2) the effect of sulfur dioxide upon the stability of the carotene in the sweet potato over a period of several months.
