Effect of Elevated Temperatures on Properties of Blended Cements with Clinoptilolite

Description: Article investigates the effect of elevated temperature on properties of clinoptilolite blended cements. Clinoptilolite was used at 5 %, 10 %, 15 % and 20 % replacement by weight for Portland cement while sand and water quantities were kept constant in all mix designs. The mortars with 5 % or 10 % cliniptilolite substitution have compressive strength exceeding 42.5 MPa after being subjected to 400 °C and 500 °C.

Exceptional increase in the creep life of magnesium rare-earth alloys due to localized bond stiffening

Description: Article describes study in which researchers attribute the 600% increase in creep life in a prototypical Mg–rare earth (RE)–Zn alloy to multiple mechanisms caused by RE–Zn bonding—stabilization of a large volume fraction of strengthening precipitates on slip planes, increase in vacancy diffusion barrier, reduction in activated cross-slip, and enhancement of covalent character and bond strength around Zn solutes along the c-axis of Mg using atomic-scale characterization and first principles calc… more

Multimodal and multiscale strengthening mechanisms in Al-Ni-Zr-Ti-Mn alloy processed by laser powder bed fusion additive manufacturing

Description: Article describes how the unique thermokinetics of laser-powder bed fusion additive manufacturing has been exploited for development of a novel high strength Al-Ni-Ti-Zr-Mn alloy. The authors say that the addition of 0.5 wt% Mn leads to extraordinary improvement in ultimate tensile strength (502 MPa) and work hardening due to the activation of two Mn-induced strengthening mechanisms

Correlating work hardening with co-activation of stacking fault strengthening and transformation in a high entropy alloy using in-situ neutron diffraction

Description: Article using in-situ neutron diffraction to correlate SF strengthening to work hardening behavior in a low SFE Fe40Mn20Cr15Co20Si5 (at%) high entropy alloy, SFE ~ 6.31 mJ m−2. Cooperative activation of multiple mechanisms was indicated by increases in SF strengthening and γ-f.c.c. → ε-h.c.p. transformation leading to a simultaneous increase in strength and ductility. The present study demonstrates the application of in-situ, neutron or X-ray, diffraction techniques to correlating SF strengthen… more

Insights into the mechanisms controlling the residual corrosion rate of borosilicate glasses

Description: Article examining the glass durability and residual rate of borosilicate glass. The authors focus on the behavior of the soluble elements of the International Simple Glass (B, Na, and Ca) to show that the residual rate is controlled by the behavior of B, a glass former supposed to dissolve instantaneously when in contact with water and thus widely considered as an ideal tracer. The article demonstrates that B release is controlled by multiple processes highly dependent on the pH. A new paradigm… more
