3D-printed and injection molded polymer matrix composites with 2D layered materials

Description: This article reports on a study where 2D TMDs (MoS₂ and WS₂) and the 3D allotrope of carbon and graphite were incorporated into acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) matrices in order to form polymer matrix composites (PMCs). The multipronged analysis described in this study was motivated by the purpose to fuse together topics of low-cost, additive manufacturing with 2D layered materials, and studying their ensuing mechanical and tribological propert… more

Adaptation of Fluctuating Magnetoacoustic System to External Signals

Description: Article studying the influence of microwave signals of different shapes on the magnetoacoustic wave system with a giant nonlinearity in canted antiferromagnet FeBO₃ at room temperature, which is close to its phase transition to the paramagnetic state. Results represent the first observation of the macroscopic quantum statistical phenomenon, Bose-Einstein condensation of magnetoacoustic wave quanta in a wave system with a high level of thermal fluctuations.

Amazon Mechanical Turk for Subjectivity Word Sense Disambiguation

Description: In this paper, the authors discuss research on whether they can use Mechanical Turk (MTurk) to acquire good annotations with respect to gold-standard data, whether they can filter out low-quality workers (spammers), and whether there is a learning effect associated with repeatedly completing the same kind of task.

Analyzing the Persistence of Referenced Web Resources with Memento [Presentation]

Description: Presentation for the 2011 International Conference on Open Repositories. This presentation discusses the results of a study into the persistence and availability of web resources referenced from papers in scholarly repositories. Memento makes it possible to automate discovery of archived resources and to consider the time between the publication of the research and the archiving of the reference URLs.

Anomalous thermo-osmotic conversion performance of ionic covalent-organic-framework membranes in response to charge variations

Description: Authors of the article systematically investigated how the membrane charge populations affect permselectivity by decoupling their effects from the impact of the pore structure using a multivariate strategy for constructing covalent-organic-framework membranes. The complex interplay between pore-pore interactions in response to charge variations for ion transport across the upscaled nanoporous membranes helps explain the obtained results. This study has far-reaching implications for the rational… more

Application of Big Data Analytics in Precision Medicine: Lesson for Ethiopia

Description: Precision medicine is an emerging approach for disease treatment and prevention that considers individual variability in genes, environment, and lifestyle for each person. Big data analytics (BDA) using cutting-edge technologies helps to design models that can diagnose, treat and predict diseases. In Ethiopia, healthcare service delivery faces many challenges specifically in relation to prescribing the right medicine to the right patient at the right time. Thus, patients face challenges ranging… more

Approaching Bounded Rationality: From Quantum Probability to Criticality

Description: This article discusses the decision-making model (DMM), a paradigmatic instance of criticality, which deals with bounded rationality issues in a similar way as quantum probability (QP), generating choices that cannot be accounted by classical probability (CP). This work may contribute to considering criticality as another possible fundamental pillar in order to improve the understanding of cognition and of quantum mechanics.

Aquiline Books at UNT: A Progress Report

Description: Presentation for the 2017 Texas Conference on Institutional Repositories. In June 2015, the UNT Libraries launched a for-fee service for publishing works of scholarship from authors affiliated with the university. While authors can choose from a menu of editing and design options, all publications are made free to read online through the institutional repository. In this presentation, we reflect on our choices in designing the publishing service—such as not organizing peer review, delivering… more
