Anomalous thermo-osmotic conversion performance of ionic covalent-organic-framework membranes in response to charge variations

Description: Authors of the article systematically investigated how the membrane charge populations affect permselectivity by decoupling their effects from the impact of the pore structure using a multivariate strategy for constructing covalent-organic-framework membranes. The complex interplay between pore-pore interactions in response to charge variations for ion transport across the upscaled nanoporous membranes helps explain the obtained results. This study has far-reaching implications for the rational… more

Approaching Bounded Rationality: From Quantum Probability to Criticality

Description: This article discusses the decision-making model (DMM), a paradigmatic instance of criticality, which deals with bounded rationality issues in a similar way as quantum probability (QP), generating choices that cannot be accounted by classical probability (CP). This work may contribute to considering criticality as another possible fundamental pillar in order to improve the understanding of cognition and of quantum mechanics.

Automating the Authority Control Process

Description: Presentation for Ohio Valley Group of Technical Services Librarians Annual Conference 2019. This presentation argues that Authority control is an important part of cataloging since it helps provide consistent access to names, titles, subjects, and genre/forms. There are a variety of methods for providing authority control, ranging from manual, time-consuming processes to automated processes. However, the automated processes often seem out of reach for small libraries when it comes to using a pr… more

A Bibliographic and Visual Exploration of the Historic Impact of Soft Systems Methodology on Academic Research and Theory

Description: This article produced descriptive narrative outcomes and data visualizations including information about top soft system methodology (SSM) authors, author citation impacts, common dissemination outlets for SSM work, and other relevant metrics commonly used to measure academic impact. The goal of this piece is to depict who, what, why, when, and where SSM had the greatest impact on research, systems thinking, and methodology after nearly 40 years of use, as we look towards its future as a method… more

CancerNet: a unified deep learning network for pan‑cancer diagnostics

Description: Article states that despite remarkable advances in cancer research, cancer remains one of the leading causes of death worldwide. The author's proposed framework for cancer diagnostics detects cancers and their tissues of origin using a unified model of cancers encompassing 33 cancers represented in The Cancer Genome Atlas. Their model exploits the learned features of different cancers reflected in the respective dysregulated epigenomes, holding a great promise in early cancer detection.

Charge stabilization via electron exchange: excited charge separation in symmetric, central triphenylamine derived, dimethylaminophenyl–tetracyanobutadiene donor–acceptor conjugates

Description: This article hypothesizes and demonstrates a new mechanism to stabilize the charge separated states via the process of electron exchange among the different acceptor entities in multimodular donor–acceptor conjugates. This work constitutes the first example of stabilizing charge-separated states via the process of electron exchange.

Collaborating on Scholarship: Best Practices for Team Research Projects

Description: Article on collaborating on scholarship. Collaborating on scholarship has the potential to provide many advantages, including benefiting from others’ expertise, reinforcing accountability, and providing motivation. However, working with others is tricky—consider compatible work habits, receptivity to criticism, and commitment to fulfill responsibilities. Decisions to be made include where to publish, in what order authors’ names will appear, and how the manuscripts will be written. Who will coo… more

Computational Topology Techniques Help To Solve A Long-Lasting Forensic Dilemma: Aldo Moro's Death

Description: The article shows how a recently-introduced method from algebraic topology, namely proximal planar vortex 1-cycles, might be helpful in detecting hidden features of the shapes and holes in images, therefore contributing to the solution of both cold and fresh forensic cases. They apply this technique in a recent case, Aldo Moro's death.
