3D Atom Probe Tomography Study on Segregation of Yttrium in Modified Aluminum-Silicon Alloys

Description: In this article, yttrium segregation behavior in Al-Si alloys has been studied using the three-dimensional atom probe tomography technique. Al-Si alloys were prepared by casting method, and yttrium was added to modify the eutectic silicon morphology in these alloys. The results indicated that yttrium is preferentially located within the Si phase, with the highest concentration at the interface between eutectic Al and eutectic Si.

3D-printed and injection molded polymer matrix composites with 2D layered materials

Description: This article reports on a study where 2D TMDs (MoS₂ and WS₂) and the 3D allotrope of carbon and graphite were incorporated into acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) and polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) matrices in order to form polymer matrix composites (PMCs). The multipronged analysis described in this study was motivated by the purpose to fuse together topics of low-cost, additive manufacturing with 2D layered materials, and studying their ensuing mechanical and tribological properties.

Action unit classification for facial expression recognition using active learning and SVM

Description: Article utilizing active learning and support vector machine (SVM) algorithms to classify facial action units (AU) for human facial expression recognition. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively suppress correlated noise and achieve higher recognition rates than principal component analysis and a human observer on seven different facial expressions.

Air Corridors: Concept, Design, Simulation, and Rules of Engagement

Description: Article presenting fundamental insights into the design of air corridors with high operational efficiency as well as zero collisions. It begins with the definitions of air cube, skylane or track, intersection, vertiport, gate, and air corridor. Then a multi-layered air corridor model is proposed. Traffic at intersections is analyzed in detail with examples of vehicles turning in different directions. The concept of capacity of an air corridor is introduced along with the nature of distribution of locations of vehicles in the air corridor and collision probability inside the corridor are discussed. Finally, results of traffic flow simulations are presented.

Algorithmically Optimized Hemispherical Dome as a Secondary Optical Element for the Fresnel Lens Solar Concentrator

Description: This article focuses on a way to maximize the concentration acceptance product (CAP), while using the minimum SOE and receiver geometry at a given f-number and incidence angle (also referred to as the tracking error angle). The laws of polychromatic light refraction along with trigonometry and spherical geometry were utilized to optimize the POE grooves, SOE radius, receiver size, and SOE–receiver spacing.
