Alcohol Withdrawal and Brain Injuries: Beyond Classical Mechanisms

Description: This review attempts to provide integrated information at the levels of oxidative signaling mechanisms by which ethanol withdrawal (EW) provokes brain injuries and 17β-estradiol (E2) protects against it. Unmanaged sudden withdrawal from the excessive consumption of alcohol (ethanol) adversely alters neuronal integrity in vulnerable brain regions such as the cerebellum, hippocampus, or cortex.

ANXA1 inhibits miRNA-196a in a negative feedback loop through NF-kB and c-Myc to reduce breast cancer proliferation

Description: This article shows that miR196a was highly expressed in ER+MCF-7 breast cancer cells when compared to normal mammary gland cells, with expression levels negatively correlating to ANXA1.

Artificially structured boundary plasma trap

Description: This article presents a computer simulation of single-species non-neutral plasma confinement using an artificially structured boundary. The results support the prospect of developing plasma space-charge based confinement, with an unmagnetized plasma of one species of charged particles confined by an electric field produced by an edge-confined plasma of a second species of charged particles.

Badly approximable points on self-affine sponges and the lower Assouad dimension

Description: This article highlights a connection between Diophantine approximation and the lower Assouad dimension by using information about the latter to show that the Hausdorff dimension of the set of badly approximable points that lie in certain non-conformal fractals, known as self-affine sponges, is bounded below by the dynamical dimension of these fractals. The results, which are the first to advance beyond the conformal setting, encompass both the case of Sierpiński sponges/carpets (also known as B… more

Bot-teachers in hybrid massive open online courses (MOOCs): A post-humanist experience

Description: This article explores networked learning technologies and the development of Massive Online Open Courses (MOOCs). The study examines and explains hybrid MOOCs and focuses on the use of bot-teachers within a post-humanist perspective. The research findings reveal that, while the use of bot-teachers is beneficial in terms of facilitating and increasing discourse/interaction, it is ineffective in providing other components of teaching presence. Yet ultimately, learners' positive behaviors indicate… more
