Deep learning for peptide identification from metaproteomics datasets

Description: This article explores a proposed deep-learning-based algorithm called DeepFilter for improving peptide identifications from a collection of tandem mass spectra. The authors find that DeepFilter is believed to generalize properly to new, previously unseen peptide-spectrum-matches and can be readily applied in peptide identification from metaproteomics data.

Protein functional module identification method combining topological features and gene expression data

Description: Article conducting an intensive study on the problems of low recognition efficiency and noise in the overlapping structure of protein functional modules, based on topological characteristics of PPI network. Developing a protein function module recognition method ECTG based on Topological Features and Gene expression data for Protein Complex Identification. First principles computation of composition dependent elastic constants of omega in titanium alloys: implications on mechanical behavior

Description: Article on the poor mechanical properties of Ti alloys. The study shows that the elastic properties of the ω-phase can be systematically varied as a function of its composition to enhance both the ductility and strength of the Ti-alloy. Furthermore, that ω precipitates are not intrinsically embrittling and detrimental and that Ti-alloys can be created with both good ductility and strength by tailoring ω precipitates' composition instead of completely eliminating them.

Elucidating the multifunctional role of the cell wall components in the maize exploitation

Description: Article on the composition of the four cell wall fractions in diverse maize genotypes and to understand how this composition influences the resistance to pests, ethanol capacity and digestibility. Results evidence that there is no maize cell wall ideotype among the tested for optimal performance for various uses, and maize plants should be specifically bred for each particular application.

Formulating a Scalable Approach to Patron-Requested Digitization in Archives

Description: This article examines how archives were forced to rethink their modes of providing access to physical collections because of the coronavirus of 2019 (COVID-19). Whereas difficult copyright questions raised by reproducing items could previously be skirted by requiring researchers to work with materials in person, the long-term closure of reading rooms and decrease in long-distance travel mean that archives need a workflow for handling user digitization requests that is scalable and requires consulting only easily identifiable information and, assuming full reproduction is off the table, reproducing items in a collection under 17 U.S.C. § 108 or through a strategy of rapid risk assessment. There is a challenge in creating a policy that will work across different formats and genres of archival materials, so this article offers some suggestions for how to think about these parameters according to US copyright law and calls for a committee of experts to work out a model policy that could serve remote users of archival collections even after the COVID-19 crisis has passed.

Using a microprocessor knee (C-Leg) with appropriate foot transitioned individuals with dysvascular transfemoral amputations to higher performance levels: a longitudinal randomized clinical trial

Description: Article evaluating whether advanced prostheses can provide better safety and performance capabilities to maintain and improve quality of life in individuals who are predominantly designated MFCL level K2. This study used a 13 month longitudinal clinical trial to determine the benefits of using a C-Leg and 1M10 foot in individuals at K2 level with transfemoral amputation due to vascular disease.

Dual activity of anthocyanidin reductase supports the dominant plant proanthocyanidin extension unit pathway

Description: This article presents research on genetic and biochemical analyses that shows ANR has dual activity and is involved not only in the production of (−)-epicatechin starter units but also in the formation of 2,3-cis-leucocyanidin to serve as (−)-epicatechin extension units. The results find that differences in the product specificities of ANRs account for the presence/absence of PA polymerization and the compositions of PAs across plant species

Topologically driven linear magnetoresistance in helimagnetic FeP

Description: Article presenting a series of high magnetic field experiments on high-quality single crystals of FeP. The study shows that resistance not only increases without saturation by up to several hundred times its zero-field value by 35 T, but that it also exhibits an anomalously linear field dependence over the entire range when the field is aligned precisely along the crystallographic c-axis.

Organization of knowledge and information in digital archives of language materials

Description: This article reports the first empirical investigation of various dimensions of organization and representation of recorded knowledge and information in language archives. The study used a combination of semi-structured interviews and content analysis. Results demonstrate that, while some of the phenomena related to organization of information in language archives are specific to these types of archives, others are more typical and have been addressed by libraries in past research and practice.

Discovery of higher-order topological insulators using the spin Hall conductivity as a topology signature

Description: This article shows a connection between spin Hall effect and HOTIs using a combination of ab initio calculations and tight-binding modeling. The model demonstrates how a non-zero bulk midgap spin Hall conductivity (SHC) emerges within the HOTI phase. This work guides novel experimental and theoretical advances towards higher-order topological insulator realization and applications.

Carrier photodynamics in 2D perovskites with solution-processed silver and graphene contacts for bendable optoelectronics

Description: Article reporting on the inkjet printed, direct contact study of solution-processed, 2D perovskite-based photodetectors (PDs) formed on flexible PI substrates. Silver (Ag) and graphene (Gr) inks have been engineered to serve as efficient electrical contacts for solution-processed two-dimensional (2D) organo-halide (CH3(CH2)3NH3)2(CH3NH3)n−1PbnI3n+1 (n = 4) layered perovskites, where all inkjet-printed heterostructure PDs were fabricated on polyimide (PI) substrates.

Collaborating on Scholarship: Best Practices for Team Research Projects

Descriptive richness of free-text metadata: a comparative analysis of three language archives

Description: This article analyzes item‐level metadata in three language archives by focusing on free‐text metadata: the Endangered Language Archive, Pacific Regional Archive for Digital Sources in Endangered Cultures, and the Archive of the Indigenous Languages of Latin America. The study identified categories of information included in Description metadata fields and the relative distribution of these categories.

Sol-gel synthesized indium tin oxide as a transparent conducting oxide with solution-processed black phosphorus for its integration into solar-cells

Description: This article describes the synthesis of indium tin oxide (ITO) thin films using solgel processing with a mixture of InCl₃, methanol, and SnCl₂, where the solutions were spin coated onto glass substrates. The combined architecture of black phosphorus on ITO thin films shows promise in its use for transparent electronics, which can also serve as a stepping stone for future solar cell platforms.
