D. A. Kolb’s Theory of Experiential Learning: Implications for the Development of Music Theory Instructional Material

Description: This research project evaluates the effectiveness of specific music theory instructional strategies in terms of D. A. Kolb’s theory of experiential learning and Kolb’s typology of individual learning style. The project provides an original methodology for the adaptation of music theory instructional material to the individual learning style types described in Kolb’s typology. The study compares the relative effectiveness of two music theory instructional sequences, one of which is adapted for a… more

Adding and Subtracting Color in the Painting and Serigraphic Processes: A Development of Consistency in Two Art Media

Description: This is a method in which designs as a whole are not pre-planned or pre-arranged, but are developed by applying layers of color. This is an additive method for obvious reasons, and it is subtractive because shapes can be covered with opaque paint or very intense stain. Transparent layers of color applied over existing colors cause hue changes, and the process creates subtleties resulting from one color showing through another.

Adherence and Haemagglutination of Moraxella Catarrhalis.

Description: M. catarrhalis is a gram-negative diplococci frequently associated with infections of the upper respiratory tract. During the past decade, some preliminary studies have attempted to elucidate mechanisms of adherence and haemagglutination of M. catarrhalis. These studies have reported, in many cases, inconsistent results. There are two purposes of this research. First, identify mechanisms that may potentially be associated with the adherence and haemagglutination of M. catarrhalis. Second, sug… more

The Amalgamation of Three-Dimensional and Two-Dimensional Processes

Description: Although drawing had offered me many avenues for image exploration and mark making, it lacked the actual physical relief surface that was a natural part of the printmaking plate process (i.e., intaglio plates or relief surfaces). Sculpture allowed the images and marks to be realized dimensionally in the round; therefore, the images became objects.

Analysis and expression of the cotton gene for the D-12 fatty acid desaturases 2-4 (FAD2-4)

Description: A genomic clone containing a 16.9-kb segment of cotton DNA was found to encompass a D-12 fatty acid desaturases (FAD2-4) gene. The FAD2-4 gene has a single, large intron of 2,780 bp in its 5'-untranslated region, just 12 bp upstream from the ATG initiation codon of the FAD2-4 opening reading frame. A number of prospective promoter elements, including several light-responsive sequences, occur in the 5'-flanking region. The coding region of the gene is 1155 bp with no introns, and would encode… more

Anxiety

Description: In summary my main three objectives are as follows: 1. To create large black and white photographic murals of isolated facial expressions with written phrases beneath each image. 2. To explore my capability to magnify and reinforce a strong emotional feeling through the large images. 3. To discover if the written phrases strengthen and support the photographic image.

The Artbook: A Synthesis of Literary and Visual Imagery

Description: In order to more fully explore this problem and to uncover important aspects of my work and work processes, I posed these questions to be answered after the completion of the five books: 1. In what ways am I able to synthesize the traditional concerns of the literary and visual image into an Artbook format? 2. To what extent am I able to develop this synthesis into an aesthetically valid and personally satisfying expression of my own artistic philosophy? 3. In what ways does this development re… more

Artists' Books: An Investigation Into Another Genre of Artistic Expression

Description: For centuries, books have been a traditional way to display prints. Contemporary artists' books have become more than simply a method of displaying prints and have, in fact, become a relevant medium for artistic expression. It has been important to my work that each of my artist's books have functioned as a unified whole, all parts of complementing each other and strengthening the overall concept.

Assisted Living: The Need for Creation of Affordable Options

Description: Assisted living, the fastest growing segment of the senior housing industry, allows individuals to remain as independent as they prefer and still receive necessary services. However, assisted living residences exist primarily to serve those seniors who can pay for the services from their own savings/income. We are facing a critical need for housing options for both the current senior generation and the soon-to-be-retired baby boomers. How will access to assisted living be opened to all types of… more

The Ballpark in Arlington: An Economic Impact Study

Description: This study examines the fiscal impact the Ballpark in Arlington has on the City of Arlington. Many individuals argue that the new Ballpark in Arlington would create numerous new jobs and bring added economic development to the city, thus increasing tax revenues. An interrupted time-series approach was used to determine whether or not the new ballpark has a measurable impact on retail sales tax receipts in the City of Arlington. Based on sales tax rebate data obtains from the Texas Comptroller'… more

Barriers and Connections, A Dichotomy

Description: I planned to explore the concept of the dichotomy of barriers and connections further. The works I planned to produce would incorporate a variety of printing techniques, drawing, and conceptual development. Each technique and method allowed for my perception to speak in a slightly different voice. The use of these multiple techniques would allow me to explore fully the complexity of barriers and connections in a manner more comprehensive than the one technique alone.

Bernhardt/Campbell: A Collaboration

Description: The idea for this creative project evolved as the result of communication between myself and Cathie Bernhardt during the first half of 1977. Both of us had been dealing with similar concepts such as reliquary-like containers and the objects contained within them. We also had a congruent approach concerning the use of materials and the manner in which they can be fabricated. These two things resulted in a mutual respect for each other's forms and imagery. We, therefore, decided to explore and co… more

Building a Personal History With Layered Symbolic Images

Description: Since I was a young child, I have had a deep interest in all facets of the cultures of early humans and more modern primitive peoples-- in particular, their art and their mythology. It was my proposal, therefore, to combine these interests with the styles of my earlier works by using images drawn from the various aspects of my ancestry in several pieces of work in which the layering of those images-- similar to the layers of my heritage-- was used. My choices were limited to a set number of ima… more

Chair-Woman

Description: As the Chair-Woman series has progressed, I have explored the various means to enhance its interpretation. I have determined that materials such as wood and fabric result in a more intimate reading than bronze. However, I have not explored how scale and proximity to other objects will affect the reading. The questions I am seeking to resolve relate to possibilities for expanding the meaning and significance in the Chair-Woman series.
