Description: This study of Franz Liszt presents the Hungarian master as a figure of conflicting forces, a sort of conflicting forces, a sort of Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde of music. In other words, Liszt was a dual personality. In this study of Liszt's major piano works, it will become evident that several factors were vital in the ultimate realization of these works.

Description: The purpose of this paper will be to compare the Hindemith theory of harmonic tension as set forth in his book, Craft of Musical Composition, with his actual use of harmonic tension in compositional practice. Requiem

Description: The Requiem, for mixed chorus (4 and 8 parts), two brass quartets (2 trumpets, horn and trombone each), timpani (4) and organ, is divided into four sections or movements: I. Introit and Kyrie II. Sanctus III. Pie Jesu IV. "Take Thou Comfort". The principal feature of the Requiem is the cyclic treatment of the two main themes. These will be referred to as the "Introit" theme and the "Kyrie" theme, in that these are the sections in which they first appear, respectively.

Evolution of the Scherzo Through Beethoven

Description: It would be impossible to trace the evolution of the form of the scherzo without treating also to some extent the history of the minuet, as the scherzo would hardly have come into being in the way it did had there not been the minuet, even though as the scherzo grew to maturity it resembled less and less its parent-form. This thesis examines the early use and origin of the scherzo, and its use and evolution in the works of Beethoven.

Description: The purpose of this thesis is to investigate the use of isorhythm in two of Arnold Schoenburg's chamber works, the Third and Fourth String Quartets. An Investigation of Methods for the Concentration of Chemical Compounds Produced by Actinomycetes and Their Relation to Tastes and Odors in Municipal Water Supplies

Description: It is the purpose of this investigation to improve upon techniques to enhance the taste of municipal water and attempt to devise one that could desorb the compounds from carbon in an unaltered state. Synthesis of some 1-Substituted-2-Methylnaphthimidazole-4,9-Diones

Description: Imidazole derivatives of 1,4-naphthoquinones are found to have biological activity which interferes with the utilization of vitamin K or of the purines since they have groups common to these two classes of compounds.
