For many years adventurers from Spain and France had explored Texas. For about fifty years Spain had tried to civilize and Christianize the Indians in East Texas. Finally the Spanish government had abolished the missions and presidios. During the following fifty years, very little had been done toward colonization in Texas. In 1821, Texas was an almost uninhabited country, with the exception of savage Indians. The Anglo-Americans came and changed it into a great state. The East Texas Timber Region has been the gateway through which most of the settlers came to Texas. The settlers who stopped there did their part in establishing the present state of Texas. The East Texans did their part in helping to win freedom from Mexico so they could lay a foundation for American civilization there.
The purpose of this study was to determine to what extent the existing Recreation Program of Denton, Texas provides for the leisure time needs of the citizens of Denton. After the existing program was surveyed, the results were compared with the standards set up by the National Recreation Association for a city the size of Denton. From a comparison of the present program and the standards, an effort was made to formulate a program that would meet the leisure time needs of the citizenship of Denton.
The purpose of this study is to make a survey of the thirteen accredited high schools in Hill County to determine some of the factors associated with high school transfers in Hill County, and their results.
In the main there are three questions to be answered in this investigation: First, what are the motives that have controlled the growth and development of the junior colleges in Texas? Second, what are the leading events in this development? Third, what is the present state of development of the junior college movement in Texas? A survey of the existing junior college situation in Texas is presented in the first chapter, while a more detailed history of development is outlined in the later chapters.
A chemical analysis of representative samples of Windthorst sand, Denton sand, and Denton clay has been made, and this analysis shows that their composition has a strict correlation with respect to their geological origins. The analyses of the different soils have shown the Windthorst sand to be highly deficient in all of the essential elements, whereas the Denton sand is deficient in only one; namely, phosphorus. The analysis of the Denton clay showed it to be highly fertile. From the consideration of the pH and the lime content, it has been determined to some extent what crops will grow in each of the soils.
The purpose of this study is to determine what facilities are needed and what changes in the present course of study in physical education of the schools of Wise County must be made in order to carry out an enriched program, functioning for the entire student population. The facilities of the present, the teaching procedure, the administration of physical education, and the latest proposed programs in this field will be considered. It is the purpose of this thesis to define wherein the social order of the South was disrupted, --- the conditions that brought about such a sweeping transformation of social structures --- and to show the growth of new social attitudes and practices evolving from the chaotic dismemberment of the old. Although primary significance is placed upon changes in the social order, it is necessary to consider certain political and economic trends that were interwoven into the fabric of social life during Reconstruction --- factors influencing, determining, or evolving from, social changes. In the first chapter is sketched briefly the ante-bellum society of the South, and in following chapters is shown the evolution of social culture during the first twelve years following the Civil War.

It is my purpose in this thesis to show any influence that Emile Zola's Naturalism had on the novels of Blasco Ibáñez.. Because the novels of the Spanish author contain many suggestions of the Zolaesque theory of Naturalism, many literary critics have assumed that he did obtain much of his inspiration from this source; they have even called him the "Spanish Zola." I shall try to determine how much he imitated Zola's Naturalism, and to show to what extent it is correct to call him the "Spanish Zola."
This study was made in the Demonstration School of the North Texas State Teacher's College, using the children of Grades I to V inclusive as subjects of the investigation. The problem was taken to try to discover if children of a certain age group have definite color preferences and other related questions such as if these preferences remain constant, if they are influenced by other factors such as intelligence, sex, or grade, and if there is consistency noticeable in the preferences of a group at any given grade level. It is also the aim of this study to see how the children of the Demonstration School compare with other groups that have been tested, to suggest possible reasons for differences, and to set forth a procedure that could be followed in order to secure more significant results than those which have been obtained by other investigators.

The purpose of this study was to analyze twelve courses of study in physical education for boys in junior and senior high schools. Based on the analysis and the evidence presented, the study substantiated the lack of uniformity of the essential phases of the physical education program.
Since one of the most important functions of a state teachers college is the proper placement of its graduates in teaching positions, this study was made to determine whether or not this function is being satisfactorily performed by the Placement Office of the North Texas State Teachers College. This study contains four chapters. The first chapter contains the introduction, a brief history of the Placement Office of the North Texas State Teachers College, its organization, functions it performs, its administrative policies, and some of the general practices followed. The first chapter is concluded with facts about the cost of placements made through the Placement Office, and the demands made by schools upon the Placement Office, as indicated by the calls received in the Office for teachers. Chapter two is a presentation of the data secured from questionnaires to five hundred registrants in the North Texas State Teachers College Placement Office, and from sixty superintendents of schools in Texas. Chapter three presents a comparison of of the organization, practices, administrative policies, functions, and office forms of the North Texas State Teachers College Placement Office with these same items in sixty-two other Institutional Placement Offices. Chapter four consists of the findings, and conclusions, and the recommendations made.
Cooperation is a subject which has intrigued the writer for some time. A study of the philosophy, history and accomplishments of the cooperative movement was begun, due to the interest of the study. In Denton County, Texas, the cooperatives have, for the past few years, been making such rapid progress that a study of the inception, growth and success of these societies seemed indicated. In spite of the broad field of study this subjected presented, it seemed necessary to review the cooperative movement before the local cooperatives could be properly interpreted. This was Done. Numerous books and magazine articles pertaining to cooperation were read. In making this library study, the writer tried to delve into the underlying philosophy of the cooperative movement. Those countries in which cooperation has made greatest strides were given particular attention in order to try to find the secret of their success. After this library approach was completed, the various cooperative societies of Denton County were visited. The writer talked with the leaders of the societies, obtained copies of the by-laws of each organization, examined financial statements, and attempted to analyze the purposes, the accomplishments, and the possibilities of the future success of these organizations.
