An Investigation of Differences in Public Library Usage Patterns Between Gifted Adults and Members of the General Public

Description: The purpose of this research was to isolate the variable giftedness in a pipulation and determine whether that variable could be used as a predictor of public library use. The analysis of data indicated that public library use was higher for the general public than for the gifted adults. Approximating soil loss calculations with satellite data and multivariate regression analyses

Description: Digital satellite remote sensing and Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have been used effectively to determine the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE) output for a number of North Texas watersheds. Isolation of the xylE-xylL region of Pseudomonas putida plasmid pDKR1 and determination of the complete nucleotide sequence of the xylE gene encoding catechol 2,3-dioxygenase

Description: A 5.1 kbEcoR I fragment from Pseudomonas putida TOL plsmid pDKR1, carrying the xylE and xylL genes, was inserted into pBR 325 and transformed into E. coli. The xylE region, coding for catechol 2,3-dioxygenase, was subjected to Maxam-Gilbert sequencing reactions.

Localization of serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) with partial purification and characterization of a serotonin binding protein in the intestinal tissue of the nematode Ascaris suum

Suppression of Immune Functions by PCBs in the Earthworm Lumbricus terrestris

Description: This research is part of an effort to develop non-mammalian surrogate immunoessays with the earth worm Lumbricus terrestris to assess immunotoxic potential of xenobiotics to mammals. The objective was to determine if earthworm immunoessays, namely E- and S- rosette formation and phagocytosis, are sensitive to a known mammalian immunotoxin, the PCB Arclor 1254. Results are presented in terms of PCB exposure and tissue concentrations during uptake/depuration.

Evaluation of an Ergonomic Intervention Program for the Prevention of Cumulative Trauma Disorders in Industry

Description: The present study analyzed the health benefits data of employees in a southwestern United States manufacturing plant. The data consisted of the prevalence rates of headaches, muscle injuries, upper respiratory complaints, and colds/flu for baseline (1985) and intervention levels (1986-1988) for five high-risk jobs.
