Recurring Thematic and Motivic Material in Gustav Mahler's Symphonies I-IX

Description: Mahler's use of recurring thematic and motivic elements is the topic under consideration in this paper. The subject was decided upon after a preliminary investigation into possible instances of the use of leitmotiv in Mahler's Symphony JI led to the conclusion that occurrences of that device are, at best, only matters of supposition. The Fifteen "Mystery" Sonatas of H.I.F. Biber (1644-1704)

Description: The "Mystery'" sonatas for scordato violin and continuo by H. I. F. Biber (1644-1704) had been largely ignored until 1905, when they were included in the collection of Austrian masterpieces, Denkmäler der Tonkunst der 0sterreich. Even then, they were the cause of some confusion which was later corrected in an addenda to the volume which included this series of sonatas. A Study of Four Solo Works for Tuba

Description: This study will include four compositions which were composed between the years 1955 and 1963. With the exception of the Serenade No. 12, for solo tuba, by Vincent Persichetti, all of the works are for the tuba and piano. The purpose of this thesis is to study each composition to determine the essential features of the music in regard to the composers' structural, melodic, and harmonic stylistic characteristics. The conclusions of the study will be found in the final chapter.

An Analysis of Maurice Ravel's Technique of Orchestration

Description: It is interesting to note that several of Ravel's compositions for the piano were successful only after he had orchestrated them. Ravel, a pianist, had a natural gift for orchestration, and when writing for the piano he seems to have projected his thoughts to the orchestra; thus some of his works are more successful' for the orchestra than for the piano. Since he orchestrated several of his own piano compositions, these present an excellent opportunity for a study of his orchestrations.
