Recurring Thematic and Motivic Material in Gustav Mahler's Symphonies I-IX

Description: Mahler's use of recurring thematic and motivic elements is the topic under consideration in this paper. The subject was decided upon after a preliminary investigation into possible instances of the use of leitmotiv in Mahler's Symphony JI led to the conclusion that occurrences of that device are, at best, only matters of supposition. The study did reveal, however, a considerable number of themes and motives in Symphony 1I that could be traced directly to Symphony I. A logical question followed:… more

The Fifteen "Mystery" Sonatas of H.I.F. Biber (1644-1704)

Description: The "Mystery'" sonatas for scordato violin and continuo by H. I. F. Biber (1644-1704) had been largely ignored until 1905, when they were included in the collection of Austrian masterpieces, Denkmäler der Tonkunst der 0sterreich. Even then, they were the cause of some confusion which was later corrected in an addenda to the volume which included this series of sonatas. In the baroque period, scordatura was used by a few of Biber's contemporaries, but the technique is not commonly used today. In… more

A Study of Four Solo Works for Tuba

Description: This study will include four compositions which were composed between the years 1955 and 1963. With the exception of the Serenade No. 12, for solo tuba, by Vincent Persichetti, all of the works are for the tuba and piano. The purpose of this thesis is to study each composition to determine the essential features of the music in regard to the composers' structural, melodic, and harmonic stylistic characteristics. The conclusions of the study will be found in the final chapter.

Blend in Choral Sound

Description: There is a need for a systematic collection of ideas concerning blend in choral sound. Many authorities discuss blend, but their concepts of the term are very divergent. These divergent concepts lead to emphasis of various factors which are important to the development or achievement of blend in choral sound. This emphasis in turn leads to various methods of achieving blend. Authorities ascribe several definitions to the term blend, as it relates to choral tone. These definitions should be stud… more

A Pedagogical Approach to the Bach Two-Part Inventions

Description: Since the nineteenth century the Two Part Inventions have become standard repertoire for piano students. However, piano teachers have often failed to give serious consideration to the suitable selection of Inventions for study. Piano students have commonly formed a dislike for Bach's piano music because of an ungratifying initial experience. There is little material written in English dealing with the Two Part Inventions. Those studies of the Inventions which do exist consist mainly of brief a… more

A Comparative Analysis of the Orgelbüchlein by J.S. Bach and Choral-Vorspiele für Orgel by Max Reger

Description: One of the outstanding aspects of nineteenth-century romanticism was its preoccupation with the past. This interest in the music or the old masters has lasted well into the twentieth century, and one whose lifetime bridged the two centuries was the composer Max Reger (1873-1916). Reger's admiration for the music of the past pervaded his own works. His preference for contrapuntal textures and devices, his use of baroque forms, his distaste for program music--all bespeak Reger's especial interes… more

The Chaconne and Passacaglia in Twentieth Century Organ Music

Description: In order to trace the origin of the chaconne and passacaglia, the much larger classification of basso ostinato, of which the chaconne and passacaglia are two later examples, must be considered. According to one authority, Lili Propper, the earliest beginnings of the basso ostinato can be traced back to the Middle Ages through the use of organ points exemplified in organum purum. A later and more developed use of the basso ostinato can be discovered in the recurring basses of the Montpellier Co… more

The Mignon Song Settings of Robert Schumann and Hugo Wolf

Description: The poems of Mignon have inspired song writers for almost two centuries. They have served as the texts for more composers than almost any other single set of poetry. The Romantic composers were especially fond of the words. The poems are full of sadness and yearning and composers found they could be set in different moods. Some settings are in major tonalities while other settings of the same poem can be found in minor. Simple harmonies are used in some settings while others contain more comple… more

An Analysis of Maurice Ravel's Technique of Orchestration

Description: It is interesting to note that several of Ravel's compositions for the piano were successful only after he had orchestrated them. Ravel, a pianist, had a natural gift for orchestration, and when writing for the piano he seems to have projected his thoughts to the orchestra; thus some of his works are more successful' for the orchestra than for the piano. Since he orchestrated several of his own piano compositions, these present an excellent opportunity for a study of his orchestrations.

The Influence of Motion Picture Techniques on the Status and Character of Music Designed to Accompany Dramatic Forms

Description: Our modern motion picture composers are limited by the necessity of fitting musical impulses to action. The timing is a matter of split-second synchronization. The writers have no classical form to follow as each script requires highly individualistic treatment, highly restricted time elements, and highly technical instrumentation. Therefore, every composition is a challenge. The challenge includes not only the time element but a demand for a greater amount of originality in musical line and mo… more

A Study of the Fugal Writing of Paul Hindemith

Description: Paul Hindemith's compositions are, for the most part, contrapuntal; and since the construction of such a traditionally contrapuntal medium as the fugue was brought to such a high degree of musical expression in the fugal writing of J. S. Bach, it is the purpose of this thesis to compare Hindemith's fugal style with the standard set by J. S. Bach.

Piano Music Inspired by the Visual Arts from 1870 to 1970

Description: The purpose has been to prove that there are connections between the visual arts (including architecture) and music. In the development of the argument it is shown that common themes exist in the arts, such as style, form, balance, line, color, and texture. Examples of piano music are offered from the last 100 years that show, to a greater or lesser extent, the influence of art. In some cases this is simply a matter of titles, whereas in other instances, such as Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhi… more

Harmony in the Symphonies of Ralph Vaughan Williams

Description: The harmony of Vaughan Williams defies classification in terms of traditional harmony alone, making use as it does at times, of structures of superposed fourths, so-called "added-note" chords, and random sonorities, as will appear. Therefore, the chords will be placed into two principal categories of usage, traditional and non-traditional.

Exercises for Preparing Singers to Perform Contemporary Choral Music

Description: This treatise has been prepared largely because of an increasing interest in contemporary music and an awareness on the part of many music educators of its merits in the curriculum of public schools and colleges. Since contemporary music is a controversial subject among directors, it has become necessary to search for specific, positive approaches to the teaching of contemporary music in high school.

Goethe's Kennst du das Land: Eight Musical Settings, 1795-1888

Description: This thesis studies the problem of combining a poem with music in nineteenth-century Lieder so that the music enhances the poetry rather than detracting from it. Eight settings of Goethe's poem "Kennst du das Land," from his novel Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahr, are compared. Settings by Johann Friedrich Reichardt, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Liszt, Tchaikowsky, and Wolf are analyzed, after initial treatment of the literary aspects of the poem. The degree of musico-poetic synthesis varies in the… more
