Plots from Greek Tragedy in Twentieth Century Drama

Description: In so far as I have been able to determine, nothing by way of general criticism or comment has previously been written on the subject of Greek plots in twentieth century tragedy, although individual writers have themselves admitted a certain indebtedness to their sources, and comments regarding the specific plays which I have cited, of course, mention a Greek origin. As regards the whole field of contemporary drama, however, I believe that no treaties earlier than this one has discussed the preā€¦ more

A Statistical Investigation of the Phenomena of Absolute Tempo as Described by Hallock, Mursell and Others

Description: The problem of absolute or positive pitch has been studied by a considerable number of researchers. This cannot be said, however, for the problem of the element of tempo, or the normal speed of the true beat in music. The reason for this probably lies in the fact that absolute pitch can be measured quite accurately, for it is dependent upon the anatomy and physiology of the ear. On the other hand, a means whereby the innate pulse in music can be externalized so as to be capable of exact expressā€¦ more

A Historical Survey of Psalm Settings from the Time of the Reformation Through Stravinsky's "Symphonie des Psaumes"

Description: Though perhaps we shall never know the music to which these religious lyrics were written, the poems have never ceased to be the source of inspiration for the spirits of men since they were first sung. Each psalm seems to have an underlying purpose with a personal message for each reader. In the Book one can find a reply to every sort of question, for the Psalms are filled with expressions of emotion brought about by all human experience. The collection of these 150 songs or psalms makes up whaā€¦ more

Television in Education: a Survey of Current Practices and a Consideration of Its Applicability to the Field of Music

Description: The use of television as an aid to music education is a relatively new and unexplored field. It is so new, in fact, that to undertake a study of what has been accomplished until the present may seem at first rather premature and unfruitful. It is my belief, however, that if television is to become the prominent factor in education that has been predicted, there is a definite need for a study of what has been done to date toward the development of this new medium. This will provide the backgrounā€¦ more

The Negro in Texas Politics, 1865-1874

Description: "The theme of this work centers around the Negro and his association with the Radical Republican party. For eight years this party controlled the state government of Texas and, the Negro's participation during this period cannot be overlooked. The Negro possessed, at this time, two valuable assets, the right of suffrage and a strength in numbers. It was through the careful coordination of these two assets that the Radicals were able to gain and maintain control of Texas politics."--Leaves iii-iā€¦ more

The Transcendental Etudes of Sergei Liapunov

Description: Liapunov's Twelve Transcendental Etudes, although derivative in nature, have significant musical and technical value, and are sometimes strengthened by the inspiration of other composers' works. Neither highly creative nor original, LIaounov drew on forms and techniques supplied by the great pianist-composers of Western Europe, such as Schwann, Chopin, and Liszt. Not to be overlooked is the influence of his teacher and friend, Balakirev.

A Study of the Treatment of Time in the Plays of Lyly, Marlowe, Greene, and Peele

Description: Because Shakespeare borrowed so many ideas and devices from other writers, we wonder whether he also borrowed the trick of double time from some of his predecessors; therefore one of the purposes of this study is to discover whether or not this device was original with Shakespeare. In this study I have considered the works of John Lyly, Christopher Marlowe, Robert Greene, and George Peele because these four seem to have influenced Shakespeare more than did any of the other of his immediate predā€¦ more

The Evolution of Capitalist Values

Description: Capitalism has developed in something less than two hundred years into a system of doctrines and values which influence man's development around the world. It takes many forms and it functions within differing cultures and with different shades of meaning. It is an intensely penetrating economic system, never satisfied to contain itself within any given geographical area for long. It is the dominant economic structure of western civilization today and is seeking a foothold in eastern culture. Fā€¦ more

The Fugitive Kind in the Major Plays of Tennessee Williams

Description: What basic similarities are found in all the fugitives? First of all, they are fugitives in the sense that they are wanderers. While not necessarily running to or from some specific thing, the fugitives nonetheless are men who travel; they are men who only face their conflicts directly when they attempt to stop traveling either by changing themselves so that they will fit in (Val in Orpheus Descending and Chance), by changing their environment so that it will accept them (Val in Battle of Angelā€¦ more

Stylistic Analysis of "BanalitƩs" by Francis Poulenc

Description: Because of the nature of the poetry, the interpretation of Banalites in this study has involved certain subjective decisions. These deductions were, nevertheless, colored by statements of the poet, the composer, and authorities on each. This is not to imply, however, that this is the only interpretation. Both poet and composer have given evidence that their creation requires a subjective response on the part of the interpreter. This is perhaps the greatest challenge offered by the work.

Planning a Sound High School Testing Program

Description: A major consideration in this study has been given to the establishment of the criteria by which the soundness of a testing program could be evaluated as its role in the secondary school. This problem was limited to the planning and administering of a progressive and comprehensive long-range testing program designed to meet the needs and problems common to most school administrators within the economic limits of a small high school. It was not the purpose of this study to anticipate the problemā€¦ more

Guidance Factors in the Selection of Students for the Study of Instrumental Music in the Public Schools of Tulsa, Oklahoma

Description: Instrumental music classes in the public schools of Tulsa, Oklahoma, have experienced a phenomenal growth during the past twenty years. Prior to this period, opportunity for instrumental music expression was limited to the high school band and orchestra, which rehearsed outside of school hours. No instruction other than this was provided and the student who wished to play in the school band or orchestra studied first from private instructors. In this study the investigator has examined a great mā€¦ more
