The hymn is as instinctive as life itself, and as universal as the air man breathes. Hymns to the sun god, to the many Babylonian deities, to the Great Spirit of the American Indian - these are found, along with others in all ancient literature.

The Musical Setting of Eight Choruses for Typical Music Classes of Grades Four to Six

Description: These eight were selected as typical lyrics to meet the diverse interests of students in the intermediate grades and to aid the teachers of those students in transmitting desired precepts and ideals. The poems are short and varied in verse form. The subject matter ranges from pirates and fairies to one's own conscience and Christmas; the moods, from whimsicality and nonsense to patriotism and reverence. The marked poetic devices influencing the choice of these particular lyrics are their rhythmical and alliterative quality; their rich, lively, yet correct language; their vivid imagery; their emotional appeal; and in a few cases their narrative quality.

A Survey of the Post-War Planning of Colleges and Universities Designed to Meet the Needs of Returned War Veterans

Description: "The present study is limited to the programs of colleges and universities designed to meet the needs of the veterans. Its primary purpose is to make a survey of the policies and programs of a cross-section of institutions in the nation and to evaluate the programs in light of needs and purposes of veterans as shown by certain surveys....in conclusion the following evaluation is made of the results of this study: 1. The men and women returning from the armed forces to civilian life will have many adjustments to make. To facilitate these adjustments, additional education in many instances will be required. 2. The federal government has made it possible for a much larger number of veterans to return to school than could resume their education otherwise. 3. Not only will the students be more numerous than before, they will be more heterogeneous, thus presenting more complex problems for the schools. The changes being made to accomodate the veterans are obviously changes which do not fundamentally alter the characteristics of higher education. They are changes in the mechanics of education designed to assist veterans in making proper adjustments to academic and civilian life as quickly and as easily as possible."-- leaves 2,96.

Hawthorne's Use of Symbolism in Four Romances

Description: This thesis is a study of the four long romances, The Scarlet Letter, The House of the Seven Gables, The Blithedale Romance, and The Marble Faun, with emphasis upon Hawthorne's use of symbolism as a means of presenting the basic moral and spiritual truths of human life. The first chapter explains the nature of symbolism and the reasons why Hawthorne used it so extensively. In each of the last four chapters, the symbolism in a single romance is considered for the purpose of discovering the manner and effectiveness of its use in exemplifying the central theme of that particular story. Although Hawthorne's short stories are extremely rich in symbolism, it was not possible to include them in the present study.

How this lack of social cooperation affects the child's behavior in the daily activities in which he engages at school and suggestions in literature for eliminating social maladjustments; and 3. How the elimination of social maladjustments will help the child to become a happier, better adjusted participant in all of the daily activities in which he engages.
