Some Discriminative Functions of an Incidental Stimulus Adventitiously Associated with Reinforcement

Description: The present study was a systematic replication of a study by Morse and Skinner (1957). An attempt was also made to study some of the parameters involved in the sensory control of operant behavior. Morse and Skinner found that a stimulus present when a response is being reinforced may acquire discriminative control over the response even though its presence at reinforcement is adventitious.

Selected Dramas and Novelas of Juan Perez de Montalban

Description: The problem with which this investigation is concerned is that of analyzing and evaluating selected dramas and novelas of Juan Perez de Montalban. This study concludes that Montalban was not a writer of original works, but his familiarity with and utilization of certain literary devices, stereotyped situations, cliches, and popular themes, along with his notable talent in portraying women and rulers allowed him to produce works which met with great acclaim in his lifetime.

Metric Half-Spaces

Description: This paper is a study of some of the basic properties of the metric half-space topology, a topology on a set which is derived from a metric on the set. In the first it is found that in a complete inner product space, the metric half-space topology is the same as one defined in terms of linear functionals on the space. In the second it is proven that in Rn the metric half-space topology is the same as the usual metric topology. In the third theorem it is shown that in a certain sense the nature of the metric halfspace topology generated by a norm on the space determines whether the norm is quadratic, that is to say, whether or not there exists an inner product on the space with the property that |x|^2=(x,x) for all x in the space.

Modification of Transsexualism: A Behavior Modification Program for Conditioning Masculine Behaviors in an Effeminate Boy

Description: Operant conditioning techniques were used to condition male-typical behaviors in an eight-year-old effeminate boy who had been described as transsexual. A probe of toys and activities was administered, which showed a trend toward his choosing feminine toys and activities. The two phases consisted of positive reinforcement of behavior associated with masculinity.

Temporal, Spatial, and Identity Displacement in the Short Stories of Julio Cortazar

Description: The purpose of this study is to analyze the techniques through which Julio CortSzar presents and explores the literary concepts of temporal, spatial and identity displacement. The author's radical departure from the more traditionally structured view of these notions is certainly one of the most perplexing and controversial aspects of his literary style.

Effect of Indole-3-Acetic Acid on the Nucleic Acids of Synchronous Cultures of Chlorella Pyrenoidosa

Description: It was the purpose of this study to investigate the effect of various concentrations of IAA on the nucleic acids of Chlorella pyrenoidosa TX 7-11-05. The time during the life cycle when the greatest effect occurred was investigated by the use of synchronous cultures.

Virial Theorem for a Molecule

Description: The usual virial theorem, relating kinetic and potential energy, is extended to a molecule by the use of the true wave function. The virial theorem is also obtained for a molecule from a trial wave function which is scaled separately for electronic and nuclear coordinates.

The Development of Criteria for the Design of an Ideal Environment for Interpretation

Description: The problem with which this study was concerned was the development of criteria for design of an environment for interpretation. The study analyzed the art of interpretation as a communicative process, derived criteria for design from the spatial requirements indicated by the analysis, and presented a sample design based on the criteria.

A Decay Scheme for 164 Ho

Description: The present investigation was prompted by several considerations. In previous studies there was considerable variance with regard to the reported values for the half-lives of the isomeric and ground states in 164 Ho. There was also considerable variance with regard to the values reported for the branching ratios and the relative intensities of the transitions. Thus a further study of the problem was needed.

Topological Groups

Description: In the study of groups and topological spaces, the properties of both are often encountered in one system. The following are common examples: groups with discrete topologies, the complex numbers with the usual topology, and matrix groups with metric topologies. The need for a study of how algebraic properties and topological properties affect one another when united and interrelated in one system soon becomes evident. Thus the purpose of this thesis is to study the interrelated group and topological space, the topological group.

Physiological and Verbal Responses to Erotic Visual Stimuli in a Female Population

Description: In recent years, there has been a growing acceptance of sexual behavior as a legitimate area of research. An impetus for research utilizing erotic visual stimuli was supplied by the Presidential appointment of the Commission on Obscenity and Pornography (1963). Research into the effects of erotic visual stimuli has typically employed male subjects (Neiger, 1966). The paucity of adequate research has not been a deterrent to the formulation of strong opinions regarding the nature of female sexuality. The present research has focused on female responses to visual representations of the nude male figure.

Le Thème du Néant dans la Poésie de Stéphane Mallarmé

Description: Stéphane Mallarmé, 1842-1897, was driven by a yearning for the ideal, and felt an immense despair when his human attempts to reach up to it, through his poetry, fell far too short. The void (le Néant) into which he fell is the subject of the present study. Sources used were the writer's poetry, as well as all critical works which seemed pertinent to the study of this poet whose symbolism is so wonderfully and yet frighteningly deep and meaningful.

An Analysis and Staging of Burnt Offering, an Original Play by Beverly McIntosh

Description: The problem with which this study is concerned is that of directing and producing an original play. The study attempts to take an original script which contains very little indication of setting, description of character, or stage direction, and establish workable patterns of interpretation and action, all of which are consistent and compatible with the central theme and idea of the script. The task generates a particular responsibility and challenge in that the experiment is happening for the first time.

The Development of a Critical Standard for the Novel in Fraser's Magazine, 1830-1850

Description: This thesis is concerned with establishing the nature of the critical standard which Fraser's Magazine, a Victorian journal, used in evaluating the artistic merit of current English novels. Eminent critics such as William Thackeray, Thomas Carlyle, and William Maginn were associated with the magazine during its early years of publication: thus, the early numbers contain some of its most valuable criticism. Because the English novel was in a period of transition in the decade of the 1840's and the years immediately preceding and following it, this study is confined to the twenty-year period from I830 to 1850. Imitative writers of romance and novels of manners were gradually being replaced with novelists concerned with social reform and with the artistic merit of the genre itself. Thackeray's and Maginn's associations with the magazine also occurred during this period, and their literary opinions are an important indication of the magazine's critical development.

Pressure Dependence of Line Widths of Microwave Spectra of Sulphur Dioxide

Description: Measurements of line width parameters for eleven rotational transitions of type (J -- J + 1) of SO2 were made and are reported herein. The line width quantum number (J) trend was obtained. The microwave spectrograph used for these measurements of line width is described. Operational methods to operate the spectrograph are presented and discussed, with particular attention given to how to measure the line width. Suggestions for future avenues of probing this molecule to ascertain the non-uniform behavior of the line width parameter over the quantum number and frequency range are given.
