Jefferson Davis and the Confederate Governors

Description: One facet of the problem of state rights within the Confederacy is revealed through a study of the relations between President Davis and the war governors. As a means of investigating those relationships this study considers their attempts to solve several major problems. This work seeks to discover the degree of co-operation which existed between the President and governors and to establish what effect this co-operation or lack of it had on the failure of the states to support many important central government policies. It also seeks to determine what influence those relationships had on the outcome of the war.

Techniques and Content in Thornton Wilder: a Critical Re-Evaluation

Description: The aim of this paper is not to disprove previous interpretations of Wilder's work, but to enlarge on them. The problem is not that the opinions of the early critics and many of the later ones were incorrect; the were merely incomplete. This paper shall attempt to show that Wilder's major thematic material falls into two interlocking and overlapping groups. Repeatedly Wilder deals with the relationship of man to something beyond himself, and the relationship of man to individual man and to mankind.

Metabolism of Hydrocortisone by X-Irradiated Rat Liver Tissue as Determined by the Porter-Silber Chromagen Method

Description: The present study may be considered endocrinological and radiobiological in nature. The endocrinology phase was concerned with studying the changes in endocrine function following the application of a stress agent. X-irradiation was chosen as the stressor in order to determine any difference in effect of this stressor from others which have been studied, e. g. heat, cold, metabolic poisons. Liver slices taken from rats at various time intervals following whole body X-irradiation were tested for their ability to metabolize hydrocortisone from a Krebs-Ringer solution.

Quaternion Representation of Crystal Point Groups

Description: The physical behavior of crystalline solids is very closely related to the internal symmetry of the crystal structure. For this reason it is desirable to represent mathematically this symmetry in such a way that the actual physical problems can be handled as they arise. In the case of this thesis the research has been guided by a list of desired properties for such a representation. No claim is made that the list is complete.
