Description: Man's coat of chocolate brown polyurethane. Trench coat style, double-breasted with 7 (1 missing) circular gold-tone buttons with centers of self. Convertible collar with large lapel and smaller, matching button. Epaulets at shoulders. Vertical slotted pockets with 1-1/2" welt. Long vent down center back closes with single, hidden button. Lined in olive green synthetic fiber fabric. Inner zipper for lining, now missing. With matching belt with brown, rectangular buckle. Brand (?) label inside: "Dimension IV"

Pillbox Hat

Description: Pillbox hat of off-white linen(?) formed as a short cylinder with flattened top, somewhat sunken around edges and slightly domed at center. The whole is overlaid with an off-white net veil to which are affixed scattered small "puffs", and four large satin cording devices shaped as looped bows or modified trefoils. Hat is unlined, allowing woven straw base to show, and has inner off-white grosgrain ribbon hat band.

Description: Ensemble consisting of: A) Jacket of woven silver metallic, heavy-weight thread in a diamond pattern; scoop neckline; short, raglan sleeves; open-front; reverse pleat at center-back below waistline; crescent, princess seams at back and front; 2 slit pockets at sides; knee-length; fully lined in ivory silk organdy. B) Blouse of off-white silk organza moire, sleeveless and cinched under the armpit; scoop neckline embellished at front with various rectangular pieces of fabric swatches in self-fabric and white knit with triangular and square crystal gem accents; under-layer of self-moire with an extended hem; attached tie at waist sides of white cotton. C) Mini-skirt of ivory crisp woven fabric (wool) with wide waistband, with box pleat at center-front; 2 pleats at back; waistband has double breasted snap closure at back and is lined in ivory silk; center-back zip closure that adjusts to a slit with 2 zipper tabs; lined in silk taffeta; 18 ½” length.

Description: Pumps of black satin. The shoes are designed with gently pointed toes, rounded at ends, with rounded vamp. At vamp is set a bow of thin black satin ribbon, threaded into the lobes of which are black spherical beads studded with rhinestones. The plain uppers are top-stitched in parallel lines, giving them the appearance of corduroy. The 3 1/5" continental heels are covered in plain black satin. Description: Pair of pumps of multicolored leather and lace. The pumps are designed with rounded toes and almost squared-off vamps. The uppers are made of off-white mesh overlaid with a lattice of beige lace, with diamond shapes of yellow, green, and coral pink leather set in the openings. The upper is edged with white leather. The medium-high heels are curved around sides and back, taper to base, and are covered with same white leather. Front of heel is cut straight across, covered with light tan leather. Powder Compact

Description: Pendant compact of sterling silver and enamel. The small, circular compact has plain silver sides and base; the lid embellished with pale blue enamel over engraved guilloche patterns. Plain silver circle at center, surrounded by blue circular field with engraved pinwheel design; the outer border with silver edges, divided into four arcs, and with 4 "keystone" or "T" shapes at cardinal points, the fields enameled pale blue over engraved ground. Pressure clasp opens to reveal interior, plain, with circular mirror in lid. On outside at hinge is loop to suspend from a chain or ribbon. Stamped on base: "Sterling" Contains small circular "puff" of dense beige felt-like material.

Description: Drawstring purse of silver thread crochet with circle and flower appliques. Near top of purse on front and back are sewn-on single metal rings and evidence of second lost ring where the top crochet border may have been folded down and attached to the purse. Hatlet

Description: Hatlet of black velvet. Black velvet hatlet has a shallow domed crown edged with large upstanding "M" shapes and descending "V" shapes of black velvet edged with black beads. The overall effect is of a child's image of a coronet. The whole is overlaid with black net veil, with triplets of black beads worked into some intersections of the net. Crown is lined in black mesh netting and edged with black grosgrain ribbon. Two plastic combs inside crown help secure hat to wearer's head. Designer's Label: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago". Gift of Mr. John C. Murphy, through the Chicago Historical Society.

Hatlet

Description: Hatlet of straw and velvet. Formed as a modified X-shaped skullcap, the hatlet is made of woven straw with white straw warp and gold ribbon weft, edged in a narrow ribbon of light tan velvet. At the center of the crown is applied pair of bows of the same velvet ribbon. Evidence of fine brown veiling, now gone. Interior of crown lined in taupe mesh and edged with taupe gros-grain ribbon. Attached at either side is a small plastic comb to secure hat to wearer's head. Designer's label inside crown: "Bes-Ben / Made in Chicago". Gift of Mr. John C. Murphy, through the Chicago Historical Society.

Description: Hatlet of black plastic tubing. Formed as an open circular crown, the hatlet is composed of three sections of black tubing shaped as crescents, attached at points. Overlaid with black net veiling with sections of black tubing affixed at some intersections. Crown is lined with black mesh, and edged in black velvet. Ensemble - Dress and Coat

Description: Dress and coat of peacock feathers. The short, sleeveless dress is entirely covered with peacock breast feathers, accented with a 1" band of blue cording and chenille trim at neckline and with blue cord spaghetti straps. It is fully lined with navy polyester. The long, sleeveless coat is covered with peacock herl / flue feathers. It has a round neckline, and no closure. These pieces are part of a larger ensemble, consisting of a total of 9 pieces decorated with peacock and/or golden pheasant feathers. Worn to the Emmy Awards ceremony in Los Angeles, California, April 1976.

Toque

Description: Toque hat of black felt. The brimless hat has a high, cylindrical crown which is higher in front than back; and with a sunken top which is domed at center. Around the front and sides are applied wide curving bands of black satin ribbon. The front and sides are overlaid by black net veiling, which extends slightly down over wearer's face. The hat is unlined. Stamped inside: "Body Made In / Italy / Union Made".

Description: Cartwheel hat of natural Milan straw. The low, cylindrical crown is flattened at top, and is encircled by a wide band of deep golden orange velvet with large bow at back. The wide, flat brim has stiffening at outer edge. The hat is unlined, with an inner straw-yellow grosgrain ribbon hatband. Designer's label inside: "Sally Victor / 18 East 53rd St."

Calotte

Description: Hat of pale purple or violet felt/velor. Styled as a calotte (also spelled "calot"), the hat has a domed pale purple felt crown "stacked" on another domed form of the same felt. The lower form has a horizontal "tuck" near the base, enhancing the impression of the hat being stacked felt domes. On right side of the crown near base is an applied bow of the same felt. The hat is unlined, with an inner dark blue grosgrain ribbon hatband. Stamped inside the crown: "Premier / Finest Quality / Imported / Velour" Joint Designer's and Retailer's label sewn to inner hatband: "Hattie Carnegie / Inc / Original / Expressly for / Neiman-Marcus". Retains original Neiman-Marcus paper tag. Obverse: "Neiman-Marcus / B830 / x8SINZ / 7529x / 2995"; Reverse: "15 00" With matching hatpin, the head covered with a small pad of the same felt as the hat.

Dress

Description: Dress of red chiffon, sequins and beading. The bodice of the dress is of draped red chiffon with deep V-neckline at front and shawl collar with deep drape at back. The long, full sleeves gather into tight cuffs, each having four red chiffon covered domed buttons and red fabric loops. At the natural waist of the dress is a horizontally ruched band which gives the effect of a sash of the same material, with simulated bow and trailing ends. The bodice simulates a wrap dress, with one side of the collar ends becoming part of the bow of the sash, and the other securing inside with a snap. The bow conceals three hook-and-eye closures and the top of the zipper closure. The short skirt is completely covered with sequins and beads. Black sequins run in horizontal and vertical bands forming a grid/trellis pattern. The vertical rectangular spaces within the grid are filled with rectangles of sequins in green, black, white and orange/red, or with tubular beads in white/iridescent, gray and yellow. There are also scattered irregular patches of orange white or green sequins on the black sequin grid. The skirt is lined in black fabric. Designer's label sewn inside at right neckline: "Arnold Scaasi"; pinned-in label at hem with hand-written notation: "5019" From Scaasi's Fall 1990 collection.
