Festival ensemble

Description: Festival ensemble from the Lisu, a Thai hill tribe. a) Top. b) Pants of hand-woven cotton with rice paste indigo resist patterning, applique, and cross stitch. c) Pouch of woven bamboo stained a dark maroon. Flat oval top, oval body, tapering to ridge at bottom. Lid secured with loop and latch. Around body of bag is band of blue and red beads and small bells. Maroon feather "pendants" at either side which terminate in a bell. Black cord shoulder strap, with "bracelet" form fastened around strap, of maroon yarn with cowrie shells. Unlined. d) Headpiece. Flat top crown of wound bamboo with 6cm wide headband. Back of headpiece has a hanging 18cm panel of black woven hemp(?) fabric. Entire headpiece is elaborately trimmed in strung and hanging shells, beads, ribbons, and silver studs.

Bedouin ensemble

Description: A) Abaya (robe) of black polyester. Large, rectangular, almost square garment with center-front opening. Undefined neckline, straight across back, and straight down on either side of neck. Armholes at upper edges of sides. Unlined. Label at inside center back below neckline with Arabic script. B) Tarha (shawl/head cover) of black polyester net/mesh. Large rectangular panel, one edge of which has applied band of black with gold edging and foliate form along the length. That edge is to from the "front" of the tarha, with the band forming the edging to frame the face, and is sewn together below chin. No labels or tags in garment. C) Niqab (face veil) of black polyester with beadwork. Black velvet head-band/ribbon at top, from which hangs the niqab from three black braided cords at nose and either side of face. The face-covering veil is formed of a roughly rectangular piece of fine black polyester mesh, folded over at top to create a "flap"/2nd layer of cloth over the face. Along the lower edge of the "flap" is beaded fringe band composed of circular silver beads and dark blue tubular beads forming a "zig-zag" line along the edge. The under layer of the veil is roughly cut along the lower and right edges. No fastener, to be pinned closed. No labels or tags in garment. The gold trim on the tarha (head scarf) and the bead work on the niqab (veil) would not be seen on the streets in a city - strictly a Bedouin style.

Description: Hat of black felt with brushed felt, fur-like finish embellished with an ornate gold sphere set with crystal rhinestones, and cage veil; shallow crown, cylindrical shape with indentation around top; two 3-pronged translucent brown combs on each inner side to keep hat in place.

Description: Turkish festival costume machine embroidered on bright orange cotton. a) Jacket b) pants (chalwar /shalwar style) c) shirt (cotton, embroidered) white, tunic length d) Rectangular belt of orange cotton, embellished with machine embroidery in metallic threads of gold, purple, green, etc. in scroll, scallop, floral and vine forms. Lined with greenish cotton. Secures with single snap. Attached to lower edge at right side is small pouch, rectangular, with curved lower side, edged with metallic lace and embellished on both sides with similar embroidery, vines, scalloped lines, flower heads, etc. Center panel of pouch with embroidered character(s). e) Fez style hat of orange cotton, shaped like a truncated, flat-top cone. Top of crown is embellished with machine embroidery in metallic threads of gold, purple, green, etc. in scroll, scallop, and vine forms. Sides of crown with horizontal bands of similar embroidery, vines, scalloped lines, flower heads, etc. From off-center at top of hat is gold cord tassel.
